A bit of George Costanza wisdom can solve the Wallabies' issues

By Bentnuc / Roar Pro

In the Seinfeld episode ‘The Opposite’, George Costanza has no job, no girlfriend and is forced into living at home with his parents. Pondering the misery of his life he says, “Every instinct I have ever had has been wrong.”

Jerry replies, “Well if every instinct you had has been wrong, you should do the opposite because it must be right.”

George starts doing the opposite to his instincts and by the end of the episode he has scored a great job with the Yankees, is dating a beautiful woman and is moving out of his parents’ house.

The Wallabies are currently George at the start of the episode.

We are now seventh in the world and have been ranked around this region the last couple of years. To put in perspective how bad our recent performance has been, have a look at the average rankings for each country since the rankings began in 2003:

New Zealand: 1.22
South Africa: 3.04
Australia: 3.64
England: 4.27
Ireland: 5.22
France: 5.61
Wales: 6.38
Argentina: 7.8
Scotland: 8.57
Fiji: 10.91

We are a close third overall to South Africa. And remember these rankings began in 2003 so don’t include Australia’s best period of rugby of the 1990s and early 2000s.

It would be plausible to say that over the past 30 years it would be neck-and-neck between Australia and the Springboks to be the second-best rugby nation overall. In fact, no team in the top ten is currently further away from their long-term average ranking than Australia.

We are well and truly unemployed, undatable and living with our parents.

There are many theories on how to fix Australian rugby but an area that I have written many articles about before has actual evidence behind it.

The ruck.

You don’t need any facts or figures to know that in the French series we were dominated at the breakdown and the All Blacks have continued this trend.

In the recent 57-22 thumping, I counted four forced turnovers at the ruck by the All Blacks in general play and another three when Australia had an advantage play (either penalty or knock on). So seven times overall the Kiwis stole our ball.

And guess how many Australia forced? One. Just one pilfer and it came from winger Andrew Kellaway, who has returned from a stint overseas a much-improved player (a common trend).

I had high hopes that Dave Rennie would fix this area but if anything, we may have crept even more backwards. Realistically, we only have Michael Hooper and Brandon Paenga-Amosa in our starting line up who make genuine attempts to get over the ball.

I have never seen Lachie Swinton, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Allan Alaalatoa, Harry Wilson or Matt Philip even attempt to get over the ball. Taniela Tupou used to be great over the ball but the last two seasons it seems like coaches have told him to forget about the ruck (let alone defence as a whole) and just save himself for his bustling runs.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to blame these players because this is primarily a coaching issue. If Australian coaches don’t realise they either need to coach their current players to compete more at the ruck or just select players who do this naturally, then there is something drastically wrong.

The two best pilferers in Australian rugby, Liam Wright and Fraser McReight, hardly even get a look in nowadays. It would be hard to find any rugby nation in the top ten in the world who would expect so little from their forward pack in the defensive ruck as the Wallabies currently do.

Sports opinion delivered daily

We need to do a Costanza. The opposite. Contest the breakdown hard. Make the All Blacks or whoever we come against fight for every single ball and give halves like Aaron Smith slow, messy ball.

This won’t solely bring us back the Bledisloe but it will make us competitive on the world stage again.

Yep very true. When Hooper startedhe was very good over the ball. The cheika/grey style of defence changed this and Rennie has done nothing to fix it

We are talking Hooper limited effectiveness at the breakdown. One pilfer against the big boys does not a Breakdown player make.

I think we need to be more like George in The Contest. Thanks, great article Bentnuc. I think this has been a trend in Australian rugby for a long time. Hooper was actually a very good pilferer when he first started SR. He was clearly coached to modify his game to what it is now. The guy who didn't change his game and was quite clearly the loser in this change of direction was Liam Gill.

TJF, This "sadly, don’t win as many as you should." has an error in it, should, should be COULD.

Bentnuc, Ball Runners? If only there was more than one of them at a time and they could get quick attacking breakdown ball.

I saw Poey in the BA lounge at Heathrow a few years back and small wasn’t one of the words I’d have used to describe him. He was the proverbial brick outhouse with massive shoulders and huge arms. He played out his career at 115kg. He was a monster

Thanks for this article, I always enjoy learning a little more about the game. One thing, I see why you might have hoped for more from Rennie wrt our forwards defensive work but McKellar is in charge of the forwards and they’re like a pack of dogs down there in Canberra, willing to infringe to impose a handbrake on opposition ball. Seems like a clear strategy to do it differently. And as you point out with Tupou, some have history with pilfering. One thing, we had Poey and Latu not so long ago - none of the guys in their positions come close to their impact, so we may still be catching up

You neglect the rest of the world has caught up. Cashed up northern hemisphere unions. While investment/interest in our game is at a deep low which cause huge impacts on our ability to create meaningful player pathways and retain our best coaches. So we’re expecting the wallabies to dominate in a landscape that’s completely stacked against it.

We have palyed pretty much the same match format since the rankings began in 2003 and used to have no problems being consistantly ranked in the top 3 or 4 in the world until the Cheika/Rennie eras

The IRB site says 'Men's and Women's World Rugby Rankings are calculated using a 'Points Exchange' system, where sides gain or lose points based on the match result. Other criteria include the relative strength of each team, the margin of victory, and an allowance for home advantage.' Seems fair enough. If we were to beat NZ or SA for example because they are ranked so high we would jump up a fair bit in the rankings. Have to wait for that to happen to see

Too bulked up? You’re kidding me! We look under-sized against the ABs. McReight can’t get a game because we have centres bigger than him. Our pack was 30Kgs less than the ABs too!

Do you know that categorically? His point still stands regardless. Australia play the best of the best each year. We rarely if ever play a team outside the top 10 and we play the ABs three times each year. In fact, this year, for example, we don’t have a test against a team outside of the top10. This year we will play the no.1 in the twice, no. 2 in the world 3 times, no. 3 once, no. 5 already played 3 times and won 2. So of our 14 tests this year we play a top.5 ranked nation 9 times. Hard to improve your ranking when you play the best consistently and sadly, don’t win as many as you should.

And are they coached longer and/or harder than our sports scientists would deem acceptable? (Funny how competition Best and Fairests always seem to have done more than “the required/formulated” amount.)

Yeh a few have made the point that our forwards are too bulked up. The ABs have always gone for more mobile forwards

Im pretty sure the ranking takes into account the ranking of the team you play against. A win against a 14th ranked team will not get as much as a draw against a 5th ranked team and so on

Good point Coker. I would say it might be a bit of both. Personally, I am very disappointed in Rennie. I thought he might make real changes particularly at the ruck. After they got smashed by a second French team at the ruck not one change happened for the ABs even after the Kiwi super rugby teams smashed us in this area
