'Pretty grubby:' Teague's manager blasts Ross Lyon for TV 'job interview'

By The Roar / Editor

The manager of embattled Carlton coach David Teague has hit out at former Fremantle coach Ross Lyon for publicly saying he would be interested in talking to the Blues about taking the job next season.

Teague is widely considered a dead man walking as the club completes a review of a disappointing season.

Teague is contracted for 2022, but Lyon openly talked about his interest in the position on Channel 9’s Footy Classified, upsetting Teague’s manager, Liam Pickering.

“We have blokes going on television on Wednesday night jockeying for his job,” Pickering told SEN.

“I don’t know what that was from Ross Lyon, it was like a job interview to me. It was pretty grubby.

“I thought it was a grubby thing, it was a set-up interview. It was pretty poor really.

“I am 100 per cent [Lyon] had dialogue with Carlton already, he was talking very smugly the other night. He didn’t want to be disrespectful to David Teague and then went on a five-minute rant about why he’d be a great man for the job.

“I get angrier than this stuff than Teague does, I don’t think you treat people the way he’s been treated this year. It’s poor.”

Pickering said he contacted Carlton midweek and was waiting to hear back.

“They said we have to wait for a review, apparently they have a meeting on Sunday or Monday and then they’ll make the call. The silence is deafening.

“I think everyone is expecting the same thing now. I think it is pretty obvious (what is going to happen).”

I think it's what's called a shameless exhibition of self promotion. No respect whatsoever for a code of honour between coaches. Nice to see Clarko and Hardwick's post match embrace.

Teague isn't a winner. He represents a proud and massive club yet doesn't have the qualities or character to be the pillar of solidarity a big club needs. He's never won anything and everywhere he goes the team doesn't win anything. By playing Murphy, Casbolt, Curnow and watching Cripps become a shadow of himself this season shows he has absolutely no idea what he's doing and where he is going. flogged by 95 points when your career is on the line is embarrassing and should be the swan song

They wouldn't even know Matthew Scarlett's language, he would speak about winning premierships and defense and the Carlton players would be looking around thinking does anyone understand a word this bloke is saying.

David Teague should Coach Carlton next year all he needs is Better Assistant Coaches that will help him like Matthew Scarlett,Justin Leppitsch,Corey Enright they will help him a lot....Like Melbourne Demons did when Paul Roos was Senior Coach,Simon Goodwin was with him and when Paul Roos finished up Simon Goodwin took over .....So Carlton need to do the same?

Too many games last year Carlton gave up 5-6 goals in a row and it happened again this year. The 19 in a row was the nail in the coffin. Teague is a gaaaaaawwwn. The fitness guys need to be replaced first though. Surely Carlton fans want A.Cerra instead of R.Lyon? Cerra as the 3rd best midfielder means the other mids move down a level, who are the Blues 3rd and 4th best mid at the moment? Mark Williams would be my pick

To be fair, Ross did say only if it was available then he'd take the call. The only white anting going on is from the media which Pickering is a part of. The media should be held more accountable on things that they say. For what it's worth, as a Carlton supporter I'm not fussed if Teague coaches again next year as long as he gets some decent assistant coaches around him and to start showing more defensively. And to stop backing in his players in press conferences when they're clearly not having a crack, sometimes it takes some public shaming to get these blokes to pull their fingers out. He also needs to sort out selection, too many mates get picked. Owies gets a crack, kicks 15 goals, has a couple of ordinary games and gets dropped. Murphy and Newnes do nothing all year yet keep getting picked. Honey should have played at least 10 games this year, Fisher should be in the 2's on his output. Selection integrity has been embarrassing this year.

Teague had his chances. He never dropped players out of form! How are you going to get a great team together when players get given games that they don't deserve. He's not hard enough I'm sorry to say. He doesn't talk like a leader, he doesn't make hard calls like a leader, it's time for that club to get serious and have a Ross Lyon coach the team. Because he guarantees success, Ross Lyon coached teams have played in 3 of the past 14 grand finals. Record speaks for itself
