Cerra officially requests trade to Victoria

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Young midfielder Adam Cerra is likely to play for Carlton next year after telling Fremantle he wants to be traded back to his home state of Victoria.

Cerra, the No.5 pick in the 2017 AFL draft, has been weighing up his future for most of this season before officially informing the Dockers he wants out.

The 21-year-old has barely missed a match since arriving at Fremantle, making 76 appearances and finishing third in the club’s best-and-fairest last season.

“Since his arrival in 2017, Adam Cerra has been everything we hoped we would get from a number five selection in the draft, which only highlights our disappointment in his decision,” Dockers football manager Peter Bell said.

“Our disappointment comes with the understanding that Adam is making this request purely based on his desire to be closer to his family and friends, something that has been especially difficult for our interstate players in the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Since 2017, we have invested a lot into Adam both on and off the field, and we are proud of the person he is and the footballer he is.

“It’s easy to forget that he is only 21, with many years ahead until he reaches the peak of his abilities.”

Multiple media reports have linked Cerra with a move to under-fire Carlton, who are yet to decide on the future of coach David Teague.

Fremantle would request the Blues to give up multiple assets for Cerra, who has been a key part of the Dockers’ rebuild under coach Justin Longmuir.

Yeah of course Carlton are going to give up two firsts, It's not like Carlton will reject the deal and bring Cerra through the Pre season draft.

No Carlton don't have to give anything. If Cerra was on contract for another 2 years then the Trade would be massively in Fremantle's favour.

No When a player is out of Contract their value goes down Carlton should offer Freo a Future 2nd and a Future 3rd If Freo want something like pick 6 and a future 1st Carlton can go Nope, It's either Future 2nd and a Future 3rd or nothing.

Carlton don't have to give much If Fremantle are asking for a ridiculous trade Carlton can go ok we will take him in the Pre Season Draft

Yes, well Tim Kelly was another in that draft who clubs whiffed on and in the end West Coast have paid a high price for passing on him. I’m quite happy with Wil Powell, who ironically was the pick the Suns received for Gaz, which Geelong magically received for losing Motlop in free agency. The pick the Suns sent with Gaz ended up being the pick Geelong used to get Kelly. The Suns lost access to NT to GWS, then it became open, before the Suns got the Zone back, otherwise they’d have claimed Zac Bailey. But the massive story from that draft was the Suns cursed that with the Eagles. It culminated in Sam Flanders, so maybe in the end he will pay back some of the picks that went into getting him.

I remember this draft well. Cam Rayner was still very good but the next 4 were all meh. I remember those were locked in to be the top 5 but none of them looked that great. Cerra looked the best of the other 4 for his skill level. Stephenson had the heart issues just before the draft so that knocked him out the top 5 conversation. I remember rating Jack Higgins, Oscar Allen, Liam Ryan and Cam Rayner as the best players in that one. Was stoked Eagles got 2 of them. I liked hunter clark more then the players ahead of him as well. It really was a weird draft. Higgins was the best performed player but considered too small. Allen was the best performed forward but was only 191cm at the time and considered too small to be a key forward. Liam Ryan (overager) was an absolute freak and the most talented player in the draft, but thought to have off field issues. Worpel was a top 10 player on performances but considered to have a poor kick. Naughton was a gun, but as a defender not a key forward. Even Rayner was thought to lack cardio fitness. Zac bailey was another who has turned out well. He looked awesome in his u18 games but came out of nowhere. He looked to me like a young Gary Ablett Jnr. Since he was from the NT though and had only played a handful of city games, clubs weren’t prepared to risk a high pick on him. I think the majority of the top 10 in that draft were safety bet midfielders, as a lot of the best looking players had asterisks against them

Hardly. It's in trouble if we have a nuclear meltdown or Noah's flood. The rest is just entitled Peppy Grove doctor scaremongering. They've dragged you in. You must listen to 6PR.

Agreed. Which then points towards taking trade picks not bodies and keeping the funds available to top up contracts for "must keep" players.

Emporer McGowan would be wise to fix our health system which is in tatters a state in disgrace, that’s why he is so frightened to move.

Cripps had to take a huge pay cut because his form has plunged. Cerra like wise will have to up tempo. The same with Martin,Saad and Williams all overpaid creates tension in the club.

Cerra is not worth 750 while Serong and Brayshaw are on less. With him going frees up the salary cap as well.

Honestly I think cerra will go east on about $650 to $700 k at most and will be adjusted over the time of a contract up or down. If going to Carlton I think their first is a start and I think an extra pick probably a second rounder more likely. I’m with others I’d prefer picks that can help get Jordan Clark. With what freo delisted today none of the Carlton players will help the club move forward Rather they take a chance in the draft. And over time freo have done really well out of country Victoria ?? Thoughts ??
