Olam Dally M snub an 'administrative error', says Storm boss Rodski

By Melissa Woods / Wire

Melbourne boss Justin Rodski says Justin Olam is in the running to win Dally M centre of the year with his omission an error by the NRL.

Olam’s teammate Cameron Munster blew up after the PNG star was left of Dally M team of the year consideration despite being one of the Storm’s most consistent performers.

In a breakout season, the 27-year-old scored 12 tries in 23 games while made a name for himself as one of the hardest-hitting defenders.

The nominees for every position were announced on Monday night ahead of the second night of the award ceremony, which is being held at Brisbane’s Howard Smith Wharves, with the omission of Olam the biggest shock.

Munster said he was “pretty disappointed” and that the NRL system needed to be changed.

While it appeared to be an NRL backflip following the uproar, Rodski said the league claimed it was a mistake.

“I’ve spoken to the NRL and they were very apologetic,” Rodski said on Wednesday.

“It was an administrative error so he was absolutely nominated, he was invited, as he should have been.

“He’s been a class act all season, he’s had an incredible season, he’s a quality human being, he’s a proud Papua New Guinea man and a proud Melbourne Storm player.

“I was really pleased to hear that it was a mistake.”

Rodski said that Olam was “embarrassed” by the attention caused by the oversight and was still to be officially told of his nomination.

Former Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith said the error was “embarrassing” for the NRL.

“He’s been the best centre in the competition this year,” Smith told SEN radio.

Smith also questioned how no Storm players were among the top five contenders for the Dally M player of the year award, despite the club’s 19-game winning streak.

“The Storm only lost three games,” Smith said.

“There’s a whole heap of matches there where players like Jahrome Hughes, Brandon Smith and even Nicho Hynes should be picking up threes and twos (voted) but they’re nowhere to be seen.”

Another administrative error that has gone against the Storm is being the top team and not getting the extra day of rest heading into the GF. Its always been the top team gets the extra rest day advantage by playing the first semi. Storm have been disadvantaged again by another cockup by the NRL admin body.

From fox sports How is team of the year selected? For positional awards, every time a players 3-2-1 that is added to their tally towards the team of the year. Then each judge is allowed to cast a vote for which player they thought was the best in that position.

oucch... yeah its simple..... most and almost all the players in Melbourne plays well thus the points are shared however; for the other teams; there's their MVP's (the play makers) like turbo, cleary or teddy, hunt or whoever where after every match collects 3 points.... so yeah the more points you collect per game; the higher there is that you gotta chance of being nominated

Here’s your solution. If winning Dally M’s is so important.. break the Storm up, spread all of their gun players to all of the bottom eight sides and then they won’t be cruelling their chances for the mighty gong. You could alternatively ask every player who has won one what they’d prefer a Dally M or a premiership ring. I’m guessing that it would be the latter for 10 out of 10 as that is what is referred to as a high class problem

You're right, the scoring per game is the same but under the current point distribution system, a player is limited in his ability to score points by his peers, I don't understand how that statement can be argued with. Surely that is evident that a player from a team who won 8 games can outscore a player from a team who won 21 games. And when looking at the stats of said players (Hughes vs Hunt 2021) the top player has higher stats across the park?

The old RLW did that. Every player rated every game. Not a bad concept.

The voting system is a farce not just because it rewards good players in bad teams but the people who voted are often biased. Trent Barrett won in 2000 when the Dragons didn't even make the finals. I think every player who takes the field should get a rating out of 10. Surely there is a program that could collect all the data on players each game and spit out a rating?

I guess that would be more transparent… but then how would you explain the Olam fiasco… if he received enough Dally M points to be nominated as one of the centres of the year, then they aren’t forgetting his invitation :stoked: My understanding was that the Dally M player of the year is automatically in the Dally M team based on points and all other positions are voted on by a panel.

I'd love to have your problems. Too many good players to win Dally M awards!

So despite losing only 3 games all year, winning 19 straight and busting all sorts of scoring records, not 1 storm player appears in the short list of awards so far. And one of, if not the best centre of the year doesn't even warrant an invite (at least until a fuss is made). Yeah, tell me another.

Assuming that 5 of each position is invited (dont know if this is the case but based on 5 "in the running" for top gong) I reckon Olam is at best equal 5th for centres this year. NRL invited the top 5 but because the other 5th's name was above Olam's he got invited where Olam wasn't. After seeing apparent public outcry following Munster's tweet thought we'd better invite him also. Manu and Burton the 2 clear choices, the controversy should be points they accrued when not playing centre (though think they may have done enough at centre anyway) rather than Olam not being a contender. I genuinely can only think of one game (vs Knights), post round 12, when voting closed to public with Olam on 2 points, where he would have polled any votes. The nature of their position means centres have to do something pretty remarkable to get points so a centre who has been above average most the year without hitting any great heights wont figure well in voting.

Except when the Storm guys win it, right Brendon? Then the award is fair. And not the best of a bad bunch.

"A better indicator of the team success is possibly how many are selected in the Dally M team of the year as that is not determined solely on Dally M points earned." I may be wrong but im pretty sure it was changed a couple years ago that positional awards are determined by Dally M points accrued.

Who are the mediocre teams being rewarded this year, Brendon?

Walker and DCE have been significantly better than Hughes and Smith this year. I do think there is a case of 'only so many points to spread across so many stars' for Storm but Walker and DCE absolutely deserve their positioning on the leaderboard.

Exactly, players in the winning team get a lot more opportunity to score points than the players in the losing team.

They still need to poll points… if the team is so mediocre and don’t win games, then the players don’t poll as many points. If you tally up the Dally M points scored by all Melbourne players through those 19 weeks, then they significantly out polled their opposition. So there is also an advantage playing in a consistently winning team. The winning team will likely share in 4-6 points per game where as the losing team 0-2 points. Melbourne players have to “share” the points with their team mates but opposing teams also have to share their points with Melbourne players. Tommy doesn’t score 3 points in games that Manly lose. Any system you come up with is going to be flawed in some way. On the whole, the Dally M awards are pretty consistent yet can still provide the occasional surprise. There are already multiple awards out there for best player and what value is it if the same player wins all the top gongs ? The anomaly this year is that there were 3 teams that won 20+ games in the season. 2 of those had dominant players whereas the Storm didn’t have a dominant performer, it was more spread out. A better indicator of the team success is possibly how many are selected in the Dally M team of the year as that is not determined solely on Dally M points earned. If you say that Smith and Hughes were Melbourne’s best players, I have no issues saying that the 5 contenders have individually had better seasons than both of them.

Nope, it's an award for individual brilliance. The best get it, no mediocrity. It's just your guys aren't playing as individuals so you won't get individual awards, you get the team award.
