Voss locked in as Carlton coach

By The Roar / Editor

Carlton have officially appointed Port Adelaide assistant and ex-Brisbane coach Michael Voss as their new senior coach from season 2022 onwards.

Voss had long been touted as a candidate to return to the senior ranks after having spent seven seasons as the senior assistant with the Power. He had been considered the frontrunner for the current Carlton vacancy for some time, following the public withdrawals of Hawthorn legend Alastair Clarkson and ex-St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon.

In a statement, Blues president Leo Sayers claimed Voss’ “strong understanding of the key fundamental requirements for Carlton right now” stood him out from the other candidates.

“With Michael, we are getting someone who knows exactly what it takes to achieve high performance — which is consistently winning games of football, to provide the opportunity to compete in September and ultimately win premierships. He has experienced the ultimate triumph as a captain, he’s played a big role in driving success as an assistant coach and it’s where we want to get to at this football club.

“We know that we have a highly talented, versatile playing group and we firmly believe that Michael is the person to get the most out of our players as people and as athletes.

“We are looking forward to each of them getting to work with Michael, as well as his new assistant coaching staff, and we are excited to begin this next reset phase together with the entire Carlton family, starting with pre-season in November,” he said.

A triple premiership captain and Brownlow medallist, Voss was once thought to be the shoo-in as Gold Coast’s first ever coach, but Leigh Matthews resignation at the end of 2008 saw the Lions pounce and bring back their favourite son from West Coast to replace him.

His first season as Lions coach saw them return to the finals after a four-year absence and defeat the Blues in a memorable elimination final. But a horror trade period, headlined by the disastrous trade for Brendan Fevola, saw the club ruin its list and flounder in the following seasons.

Voss was abruptly sacked late in the 2013 season, despite fortunes improving, with the Lions widely believed to be in pursuit of Paul Roos. However, Roos chose Melbourne and Voss’ sudden departure was cited as a factor in the infamous ‘go-home five’ debacle that offseason.

After taking 2014 off, Voss joined the Power as midfield coach in 2015 and retained that position until today’s announcement.

They should've made sure Mr Elliott was sitting down before they told him the name of the new coach.

Apologies. I misread your comments.

Jack Elliot passed the former bombastic president of our Bluebaggers. This means the curse of John Elliot is over. Expect success.

I wasn't suggesting Stan Alves be hired for anything. I was referencing your comment about throwing away coaches after one stint. How could you not see that? The guy is 75 years old. I was agreeing with you. Stan Alves is the exemplar of a coach that was sacked for stupid reasons.

Do I really need to explain the difference between Voss and Alves? Voss has the IP required to be a modern coach; the game has changed somewhat since Alves last coached.

Stan Alves took St Kilda to a GF, then finals and was sacked, never to coach another AFL team. Grant Thomas was treated similarly.

Heard the sad news this morning about John Elliot passing away. A great figure at the club. Maybe this is karma. One door closes & another door opens.

Why do you mean by value Don? Coaches aren't included in the salary cap & Carlton would not have a problem paying him a good wage. His ability to attain some consistent success will virtually be the only thing that matters.

The appointment of Cook to quell the factions for Voss is still key. Ironic that Elliott passes the same day as Voss appointed - sign of a new era? Hope he does well - if just to give the second chance coaches opportunity

Voss the Boss will roll up his sleeves & demand commitment! Leigh Mathews style :stoked:

No. They have around 27 in the 21-28 bracket and 15 of those are in the 21-24. It's a good spread.

Nah they’ve got an old list. Carlton has failed at developing the role players they need to win premierships. They have very good players like Walsh and weitering but they have no one who’s willing to roll their sleeves up and get the job done

Not at all. The Suns see out Dew’s last year, Clarko has a lovely rest and then takes on the Suns 2023.
