May to face Panthers board over social media antics

By George Clarke / Wire

Next Wednesday looms as D-Day for Tyrone May’s Panthers future with the utility set to front the board over a controversial social media post.

May was stood down by the club last week following his conduct on social media in the wake of the club’s grand final win over South Sydney.

The Penrith board met on Wednesday where they issued the 25-year-old with a show cause notice.

“At today’s meeting of the Panthers board of directors it was determined May’s conduct constituted a serious breach of his NRL playing contract,” the club said in a statement.

“In accordance with disciplinary protocol, May will have the opportunity to appear before the board next Wednesday before a sanction is imposed.”

The utility was fined $7500 by the NRL for the post which “did not align with the values of the game” as he made reference to his conviction for recording an intimate image without consent.

A post showed a photo of May alongside coach Ivan Cleary outside a court in 2019 captioned with lyrics by rapper Drake which read: “And the dirt that they threw on my name turned to soil and I grew up out it. Time for y’all to figure out what y’all gon’ do about it.”

May was lucky to avoid jail at the time and missed the entirety of the 2019 season after being stood down by the NRL.

Magistrate Robyn Denes described his behaviour as “morally reprehensible” and sentenced him to 300 hours of community service.

May, who debuted for the club in 2017, has scored ten tries in 56 games for the Panthers.

Well, it's been 4 days after the Panthers board meeting on Wed. 27/10 that was meant to decide Tyrone May's fate and you can hear crickets. Looks like the Panthers intend to drag this out and wait for the public interest and media attention to die down before doing nothing... as usual. By their inaction against this club the NRL is only fueling the toxicity and arrogance of the Panthers do as they please culture.

So… instead of prison time the courts punished him for this criminal act with a stern talking to and community service. The judge was clear that May showed no remorse at the time, didn’t even try to fake it, why would anyone expect him to have a change of heart down the track? Knowing this, why did the Panthers re-sign him? Come on NRL… you keep banging on about respect for women - it is well past time to show us you mean it. Grow a spine and set an example by deregistering a convicted offender.

Regardless of the Panthers decision on May’s contract, they should sack his barber.

Does it matter one bit that he has this meeting? He is only contracted for one more day. Is he about to be sacked in his last day of work? Let’s face it, he won us the Grand Final. If he doesn’t drop it stone cold, old man doesn’t gift it back.

Isn't May a free agent on november 1 anyway? The younger May brother is the one the Panthers should be trying to keep anyway! Cody Walker is still not a big game player!

Latrell is a grub on and off the field, breaking covid rules for his "cultural, boozing, motorbiking & shooting" boys weekend proved that, souths tap on the wrist & in court, nothing from the NRL "Icon" LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Cody walker is still not a big game player.

I googled the current time in Dubai at the time of posting, Tony. Take it up with Google. :stoked:

I'm sure I'll be able to read it GB. By the way, if you are in Dubai, check your watch. It's closer to 7am than 2am. I'd hate you to miss out on the inclusive buffet breakfast.

"Yet another late start GB? I hope you brought a note." Who's to say I'm not in Dubai on business and it is 2am currently and I'm just about to go to bed? As for "bringing a note", I wasn't aware there was a requirement for the students from the accelerated learning class having to produce a note when they enter a remedial class? If they did, who could read it anyway?

Future father-in-law Ivan Cleary moved Matt Burton and Paul Momirovski on to free up room for May. May now has a 50/50 shot of making the bench each week.

Yet another late start GB? I hope you brought a note. If May is in the Panthers' best 17 they have a problem

"May isn’t a player that youd want to lower your standards for." Totally agree. I was saying something along those lines saying that May can barely hold hold down a place in the starting 17 anyway. Besides, as for a player the Panthers would be willing to lower their standards for, both Nathan Cleary and his dad Ivan already have that position filled. :silly:

I can only hope that is an offence that will never be repeated again Pommie Panther. And I say that as a term of endearment. :silly:

Hi John! Let's hope that Ivan has been very strict, for Nathan's sake. One of the best punishments is apparently confiscating their mobile phone for a period of time.

I’m sure that Ivan has already meted out some forms of punishment to Nathan for some of his “mischievous” off field behaviour e.g. cutting back on his pocket money, allocating additional household chores & perhaps spending time in “the naughty corner” & having his crayons & colouring in book confiscated. That will teach him a lesson.
