City boom trio will take time: Kisnorbo

By Anna Harrington / Wire

Mathew Leckie, Jamie Maclaren and Andrew Nabbout didn’t hit the scoreboard in their first A-League Men game together but Melbourne City coach Patrick Kisnorbo is confident the star trio will hit their straps.

The Socceroos trio started Friday’s 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar but while Leckie and Maclaren both had chances, they were unable to find the back of the net.

None of the three played in last week’s FFA Cup win over South Melbourne, while Leckie and Maclaren only arrived back in Melbourne on Thursday after the Socceroos’ World Cup qualifiers.

Leckie played more than 70 minutes across both Socceroos games, and Kisnorbo was happy with how his star recruit had backed up and started to find continuity with his fellow forwards.

“Mat had a great chance in the first half. It’s great to see that they’re able to back the game up after a 14-hour flight back home and they only had 48 hours to prepare,” he said.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“In that way it’s great to get minutes into their legs, you could see they were fatiguing towards the end but the modern-day footballer, unfortunately because we live in Australia, that’s what happens.

“It was just good to get them back, good to give them some minutes and get continuity and to play together all three of them because we haven’t had that in this season, even in the practice games, I think we’ve had one like that.

“Preparation’s been difficult in the connection in the front three, so it was great for them to all play tonight.”

City will next travel to Adelaide United, then play Hume City in the FFA Cup before enjoying a run of four consecutive home league games.

With Socceroos commitments finished for the calendar year, Kisnorbo expected Leckie, Maclaren and Nabbout to gel.

“They’ll be here until January, when the next squad gets called in,” he said.

“It just breeds continuity and rhythm where they get to train day by day, week by week, everything’s settled.

“So that helps us but international footballers, this is what they have to do.”

nothing personal JB, but I'm a fan, here to support. Still, having said that, I think I'm fairly pragmatic. Roar has one of the youngest squads in the league, if not the youngest. If you think we are picking up rejects from other clubs, I disagree. If you think Moon's use of five subs indicates the lack of a game plan, again I disagree. The team had a four hour plus journey to the match, and four hours to return home immediately afterward, and will do that again next weekend. If he hadn't used all his subs I'd say questions should be asked. Believe me JB, I have an independent mind when I watch Roar, but I am a fan and come here to support them.

lionheart - For some time you and I have apparently been at "crossed swords" re. my comments. I have on occasions asked you to watch the game through your own eyes and to ignore the ramblings one often gets from various media outlet people more interested in the journalistic degree , that the intricae of the game they are watching. Lets examine this latest effort of yours. You used the word "semantics". You mentioned how well the "YOUNG" defence had played. I simply pointed out that 3 out of 4 of the backline were actually veterans. You question my use of "getting players off other benches" I mentioned Akbari and Brown trying to hit the "big time" at Victory, and, being blunt about it, failing to command a first team spot in a poor Victory team. Ivanovic was a substitute at Sydney FC, who had gone to some lengths to get Bobo and Le Fondre back from overseas to fill their striking roles. Neville, after a lot of travelling, joined roar from another a league identity and Mileusnik from a failed European episode and Adelaide. .Add to them the players who have been recruited from overseas and the numbers start to show a different picture to your "young graduates from academy" spiel. You appear to think I have a slight against Moon which I can assure you I don't. He is a young man, inexperienced in A-league football, and as such, at times, gives the impression he is making changes with more hope than any pre-worked plan. This of course has been somewhat exacerbated by the use now of 5 substitutes instead of 3. Just picture it, you can now replace half of your outfield players. Can you describe a tactical system that will be successful under those conditions? I struggle with that. jb

Semantics JB. There's as many youngsters in the team as players in their late twenties, and Trewin was a standout in that match. I'm also not sure if all those players came off reserve benches, but if they did we've done well to pick them up. I don't recall too many matches where you have not commented that Roar lacks a system or plan. Maybe you are right but Moon seems to me to the sort of coach who would definitely have a plan. He doesn't leave me with the impression that he's sending players out there and hoping they work things out. On those substitutes, I thought that was more to do with player management rather than game management, fatigue after a long flight and travel, first match of the season, that kind of thing.

I think he was upset Roar went off script in the second half — it was meant to be a City “goal fest” and 6 or 7 to nil

Controversial call for the first city goal. Controversial call for the Roar disallowed goal. Same AR but in the first one gives the benefit of doubt to the attacking side, in the second one to the defending - it’s those inconsistencies that coaches hate. (No idea personally if either was on/off to be honest) Roar CEO posting that pregame they were told VAR wasn’t working, then during the game told it was working, then post game no one was sure. So a shambolic start in Match 1 for the APL, that and MacArthur moving their hand is all a bit micky mouse.

Lionheart - I for one am fed up with coaches being interviewed and rolling excuse after excuse as to why their teams have not performed. Don't forget ,it wasn't only last night ,we have been getting the same treatment in recent weeks at Socceroo level. Now to get to the gist of your comment Watching the defence play what you call "lovely football", I was a bit surprised by your observation, for in Brown ,Hingert, and Neville all in, or nearing their thirties, I would hardly describe them as "young'. My reference to raiding lower leagues seems to have upset you but I can name 5 playing last night who have been brought back from other a-league reserves ,Brown and Akbari from Victory, Neville from Perth, Ivanovic from Sydney FC 's bench and Milenusnik from Adelaide (via Europe). Now to be objective about the game I did not say Roar did not play reasonably well, I did say they looked to be short on a system or game plan and when 5 substitute are used it becomes hard to work out what the team is attempting to do over 90 minutes. City were the opposite ,they have the class players but Paddy Kisnorbo would not be fooled by that display. after all, 3 players who were playing in the World Cup last week were trying to score goals and failed, for it was the centre-back and mid-fielder who got theeir valuable counters. That to me is a real problem. Cheers jb.

streaming is good for on-demand and mobile watching, but the at home live viewer needs a bit of thought. Last night's match came to a bit of a sudden thud, end. I was expecting more like an EPL experience with the studio switching to the coach's formal interviews, rather than the one sideline interview we got with Moon and none with Kisnorbo, at least I never saw any. And random player interview with MacLaren. But at least we know that Paramount+ want the show to improve.

This new era for Aus football is the technological age in my opinion. It will sink or swim based on its offerings on P+, 10Play and KeepUp. Can't watch games via a satellite anymore. Very few watchable via a TV antenna. News will not be in a newspaper but on web platforms. Likewise marketing and ads. A grace period yes, but they are very much on the clock now.

when I say fortunate I mean that Roar defended exceptionally well except for those brief moments. But fair play, the score was 2-1 and that's all that matters.

to be fair, first time for Paramount+, and they tweeted that their techs were listening out, let them know of any issues so they could address them

I agree that City didn't have plenty of clear cut chances, but to suggest the goals were fortunate is a bit 'over the top'. City's pressure in the first half resulted in Roar have the lapses and thus creating the chances for City to score. The 2nd goal was a clear demonstration of this, where 3 Roar defenders chose to track the overlapping player, as City had played that ball countless times during the game. This created the space required for Metcalfe to go inside and score. I think the scoreline was a true reflection of the match.

Few images popping up on social media of City offside on their second goal. So was VAR available last night or did APL (who produce matches now) just not get to implementing that in? Farcical if true. Same linesman on both contentious calls by the looks so probably needs to have a week off.

Just saw two different billboards around the north side of Brisbane promoting the FTA match on TV tonight. Well played to all parties concerned. I intend to ride both KeepUp and Paramount + hard regarding their primitive system design and buggy functionality but credit where credit is due.

No I wrote him off last season as a coach this is just confirmation. City last season were out of the finals position losing 4 of their first 6 games. Then they had injury problems and the youth came in and they won the title. If it wasn;t for those injuries I have absolutely no doubt City would have won nothing last season, this coach is that dumb.

I think you're being a tad unkind there JB, with the comment about Roar raiding the lower divisions and the quality of the match. They've been bringing these youngsters through for some time now, in their youth teams. Moon's pretty open about his policy of playing youngsters and you'd have to agree that their defence last night was lovely to watch. Not a lot of fast passing and spectacular goals to see, but Roar's youngsters were so disciplined in defence, positioning and marking were a joy to watch. City too, crowded Roar's young attackers out of the game - Dehmie and Akbari could not take a step either way without bumping into a City defender. Ivanovic found space easier to come by, but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the match.

What was Kisnorbo losing his head about last night, when he ran around the Roar technical area? Moon gently guided him away, at least that's how it looked on TV. Patty needs to cool down a bit.

City barely troubled Roar with all that ball and were fortunate to score the two goals, both from rare lapses in Roar's efficient and well disciplined defence. The game is not only about having the ball.

From an onlookers perspective this game did not deserve comments from either coach regarding the why or how their charges did not win the game. This was a typical season opener, with most players slightly out of touch in all aspects of the game and of the two men asked to comment I think it is Kisnorbo who would have the more serious reasons for complaining, for his highly paid stars just didn't rise to the occasion. Moon on the other hand got what he should have expected from a team put together , not by money, but by raiding lower divisions to fill vacancies caused by last year's departures. As I said ,from a spectator's perspective this season opener was not a good advert for our new season and it can only be hoped improvement will soon show at other grounds. Cheers jb.
