Rain hampers England and Australia's Ashes preparations

By Murray Wenzel / Wire

No play is expected on day one of England’s final tour game before the Ashes series opener in Brisbane next week, in another blow to the tourists’ preparations.

Only 29 overs were possible in last week’s England v England Lions tour game at Peter Burge Oval, the rain cruelly returning overnight to spoil their rematch at Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane on Tuesday.

More rain is expected later on Tuesday and again on Wednesday and Thursday – with Australia’s intra-squad hit-out from Wednesday is also likely to be impacted.

The latest weather forecast means England’s star men Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Stuart Broad and James Anderson could enter next Wednesday’s Gabba Test opener without any time in the middle.

Stokes, who took time off to care for his mental health, in particular is desperate for some action given his last game of cricket was in July.

What kind of Christmas pudding wicket will the Gabba produce?

It's not looking too good. Writing from the western suburbs of Brisbane where it's belting down. I need to take the bins out, but really don't want to.

They don't have 4 out and out quicks, barely have 3 on a good day. They'll miss the pace of Olly Stone and Jofra Archer and Wood will not last a series.

Brian, Sadly not a debate. Selectors dont' have the hair on their peaches to risk splitting up the BIG 3 (that were towelled up by the 3rd string India side!)

Not sure the scheduling makes that big a difference. If the test kicked off last week or this week it would have been hit with a lot of rain. 8 out of 13 draws at the Gabba have had November starts (61%), not much different to the overall percentage of tests at the Gabba (65%). If we end up losing a lot of time to rain, La Nina probably deserves the lion's share of the blame. I'm already writing off the Sydney test which seems to get rained out every other year even during droughts!

The 4 wettest months in Brisbane are Dec, Jan, Feb and March. It is a shame that CA had to hold this test in December (because of the T20 World Cup I assume) as there is a good chance of it being ruined by rain. Traditionally, test matches in Brisbane have at least started in November (41 out of the 63 tests played there) with only a few in Jan or Feb. Historically, there is 30% more rain in Brisbane during December than November. So, will we all be glued to our televisions next Wednesday to watch the rain in Brisbane?

Yes, I can see Pat pulling a shifty and organising a two headed coin. Then leaking this to the English press who pass it onto Joe. Then Joe calls "Tails" only to find out that Pat triple bluffed him by actually having a two tailed coin!

But as a first time captain would he be game to send the opposition in, knowing that if it backfires there will be thousands of journalists and keyboard warriors ready to hang him from the rafters If he chose to bat and they didnt do well the same media would be attacking him anyway. These days thats Media's only role apparently.
