NZR boss gives update on Super Rugby Pacific as COVID threatens schedule

By Ben McKay / Wire

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson is adamant Super Rugby Pacific will go ahead in 2022 despite the growing threat of the Omicron virus.

A decision on the future of the competition will be arrived at “in the next few days” according to Robinson, who spoke to media at Wellington alongside the code’s end-of-year board meetings.

“We would like to get to a situation where we can replicate as closely as possible the original Pacific format,” he said.

“There’s a few moving parts to that and a few different contingencies being worked through … we’re down to having to make a call pretty soon.

“The scenarios that we’re talking about the moment all have an element of trans-Tasman (matches).”

Last month, Australian and Kiwi rugby chiefs released the Super Rugby Pacific draw – including expansion franchises Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika – with a kick-off date of February 18.

Jacinda Ardern’s government then threw a spanner in the works with its border reopening plan, which requires all arrivals to self-isolate for seven days on arrival.

The NZ government has repeatedly declined the idea of exemptions for sport but Robinson is clinging to the prospect, saying there was a “huge amount of work going on with the government” to get the competition happening.

COVID-19 has already forced many changes to southern hemisphere rugby, including the last two Rugby Championships.

In 2020, the Super Rugby season was suspended before being split into domestic competitions.

In 2021, the South African and Argentinian sides went their own way and domestic competitions concluded with a mini trans-Tasman season.

Given the NZ government’s hyper-vigilance in the face of COVID-19 and its fear of the Omicron variant, trans-Tasman sport could be a long way from returning.

COVID-19 has also smashed NZ Rugby’s finances, which wore a $NZ34.6 million ($A32.7 million) loss last year.

Robinson pre-empted another loss, saying “we’d like to think we get pretty close to breakeven”.

The former All Black is maintaining a pursuit of private equity investment from US firm Silver Lake, though his efforts have been stymied by the players’ association.

The selling of a minority stake in the All Blacks is highly contentious among players and fans.

That SRP would be impacted by pandemic travel restrictions was entirely predictable. Heads should roll at Rugby Australia. Also, SR AU kicked TT's butt last year with bigger crowds and a record TV audience. It was a better tournament too, engaging sports fans right across Australia. It's actually unbelievable RA canned AU. Hopefully the pandemic will force them to do the right thing for a third season. Carn Queensland!

I’m aware of the info...And all indications, all data supports that it’s more contagious , more mild than previously. This supports the hypothesis that Covid is migrating to an epidemic rather than a pandemic and this is the beginning of seasonal mutations each increasingly less potent.. I will respect your opinion but kindly respect mine too.

Fiwi Im hearing/reading that the Omricon is regarded as a lot less potent than Delta or the original as they are seeing far less percentages of people going to hospital and the ICU from it. Not that its any sort of garrantee you dont get badly sick or die but the reality at this stage is its more contageous but less potent.

the evidence coming out of south africa and elsewhere is that Omicron's symptoms are mild ONLY IF you have already had COVID-19. Apparently, the antibodies left in your body after the initial infection "primes" your body's immunity system to better fight off Omicron. That is the latest data to come out of South Africa; when they took a close look at all those "mild" cases, they noticed one common factor. All of them had been in people who had been infected with COVID. Those residual antibodies have given them the protection equivalent of a double vaccination. All the experts worldwide (including here in Australlia) are now stressing this point: Omicron is NOT MILDER than Delta if you have never caught Covid-19. And comparisons with the flu virus are also irrelevant, given that the flu is a rhinovirus and COVID is a coronavirus (different viruses). The science is out there; read it. I did. Anyway, moving on now ...

Infection rates in South Africa very high..Some estimates have it as high as 1 in 5 people..yet we are not seeing rises in hospitalizations or deaths ..Only 21% of the population are vaccinated .....Reports from doctors in the frontline are consistently confirming it as mild.. Not saying its not dangerous for those with underlying conditions .. Flu can also be dangerous ..so I'm afraid your perspective is not supported by the scientific and medical community.....

To you maybe. And it seems your family shares that resilience. But to others it is as bad as Delta. What works for you won't work for others People are dying from it or at least getting very sick. In any case, you are still at risk of reinfection.

The financial state of NZ Rugby is being differently reported , but I’m glad if you are correct that’s not the case ..Sport Rivalry doesn’t extend to wanting to see others struggling..As for isolation , we ( The global community ) have sufficient interventions available to travelers ..A pre travel Test and vaccination certificate should about eliminate 99% of potential spreaders . You want protection against the Delta varient and vaccinations , I rather call it therapies as they are proven to work .Not totally which is what an actual vaccination does but mostly…….If you want 100% , well that’s impossible ..Go read Goldilocks and the 3 bears for a reality check..

Nope , I never had it before ..Neither did all 4 members of my household ..I incidentally was the only one vaccinated..All 4 only had mild symptoms and fully recovered withoiut any medical interventions..It is mild ..

You yourself said it, JN. Omicron may not be as hard on those who already had COVID because the antibodies primed your immune system. To those who never caught Covid, it's a different story.

100%. Really disappointed Super Rugby AU didn’t kick on. We read how neglected western Sydney is, yet Auckland get a pasifika team. Typically, it’s a case of what authorities tell you is good for you, when you really know it’s not.

A total rethink needs to take place around the Omicron panic .. I call it the omigosh virus .. a few things we now know for certain namely that travel bans are useless for starters.. You can delay but not stop it. We also know that despite being highly contagious it’s also not deadly .. in addition even Pfizer have acknowledged that being fully vaccinated only affords 30% protection.. I’ve had it so speak from personal experience. It’s also almost certainly not the last variant.. More to come .....So must we shutdown our freedoms, our economies, Our sport indefinitely....The UK have lifted the ridiculous travel ban on South Africa.. It achieved nothing ...The more relaxed approach to Sport by them may force South Africa to head North once and for all....Those financial losses reported by NZ Rugby for example are not sustainable and it’s not going to help by isolating indefinitely.. Like I said .. a rethink..

I see WA has banned NSW again. Also changed the rules in and out of Qld and Tassie plus maintained the rage against SA and VIC.

If you check the Qld health website it clearly states that once Qld 90% vaccinated no quarantine required and that should be mid Jan. Subject to change I guess but that’s the current policy.
