COVID cases to keep hitting A-League Men: Aloisi

By Anna Harrington / Wire

Western United coach John Aloisi expects COVID-19 cases at clubs to continue to cause havoc throughout the A-League Men season.

United have confirmed that two additional players had tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and Friday respectively, after a previous mid-week positive case.

All other club football staff and the playing group had a second round of PCR testing on Thursday and received negative results, ahead of beating Adelaide 1-0 on Friday night.

“It’s probably going to happen all season. We just have to be ready for it and make sure we adapt well and the group did tonight,” Aloisi said.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“We’re hoping that we aren’t going to pick up even more cases in the next couple of weeks but we just have to make sure we’re still following the right procedures, in terms of training, of being around the group, where we have our meetings and all that.

“We also have to be prepared that this can happen even with travel. We don’t know what’s around the corner.

“It’s a bit of a lottery at the moment in terms of that and we have to be adaptable.”

Aloisi said the three players, who he wouldn’t name, were all doing well at home.

On Thursday, the league postponed Perth’s remaining 2021 fixtures against Brisbane and Adelaide after Glory’s entire squad were deemed close contacts of a player who tested positive.

Unless they can strike a deal with the Queensland and WA Governments, Glory will have to spend two weeks under hotel quarantine.

“One of my teammates caught COVID so unfortunately the whole squad has to hotel quarantine in Brisbane for 14 days and potentially spend Christmas alone in a hotel room,” Perth star signing Daniel Sturridge said on Twitter.

“Hopefully, we find a solution and can move forward with the beautiful game.”

The Glory found a sympathetic ear in Adelaide coach Carl Veart.

“We follow all these mandates and then we still get punished,” Veart said.

“I just don’t understand what the point is of mandating vaccines if we’re still going to live the way we did before. I just don’t understand that.

“I feel sorry for the Perth players and I think the league has to do its best to make it so they don’t have to do the 14 days quarantine.”

Earlier this week, Newcastle had two men’s players test positive, while Macarthur confirmed a positive case on Friday.

Sydney FC’s Rhyan Grant tested positive last week but was released from home isolation on Thursday and could return against Wellington on Sunday.

Waz, I am enlightened mate. With that knowledge onboard, it puts a new spin on things. And in my opinion no state has got it more wrong than Victoria, but my opinion counts for nothing. What we need to do is to pray that the politicians are strong enough to say enough is enough. Europe is taking stronger action against anti-vaxers so too should Australia. When you weigh it up, it comes down to a minority holding the majority to ransom, and that, is totally unacceptable. We are not going to get anywhere whilst there is beligerence.

I think QLD has applied strategic thinking to this situation, certainly to COVID generally - we have been mercilessly free of COVID since the initial outbreak for a reason. Could Glory be handled better? I think the answer is yes but how and what that might be is up for debate. Pressure is coming from the medical professionals for NSWs to introduce some controls but note that QLD brought in a mask mandate yesterday while other States are ditching theirs. That looks like good management to me, and it’s that overall “management” of the pandemic in QLD that this decision needs to be viewed. Also the APL has a part to play. Glory were meant to play Roar H/A in the first two rounds but - to please some VIC teams - they changed that. And here we are - if you’re the QLD Government being asked to help here and you ask the question - “did the APL do everything they could here” the answer is no. And you might also question Glory’s ability to maintain their isolation while travelling - how did they get infected?? It’s not easy but this is a public health emergency and when States get it wrong hundreds of people die needlessly. So far, QLD has got it right so it’s hard to criticise them even though I don’t like the outcome.

Harry, you've nailed it mate. Those that have been given the responsibility of administration and afforded positions of power and decision making should hold those positions with the constant mindset of impartiality and consideration for all aspects of society under their remit. Sadly, the politicians in this country appear so far from impartial that it's ridiculous.

Waz, The sad thing is that e.g. the U.S. just passed the 800,000 lost souls mark. We are on track to surpass the number of lives lost in WWII. I know that my opinion counts for nothing but some hard and fast decisions need to be made. I note that before Christmas the German government will vote on mandatory vaccination. What's the chance of that happening here? Zero. The Germans are taking the tack that supports the preservation of many lives as possible. If others don't want to be part of that, then their decision is respected. Austria is taking the same tack and Europe is watching. What annoys me the most is that at this point, we've seen zero repercussions for China. They should be getting smashed for this. Instead they continue to agitate for conflict. The QLD and WA state premiers need to apply a little bit more context and strategic thinking and a little less ego and self-centredness. In all this madness, sadness and greed, football is a small and insignificant opportunity to forget and immerse ourselves in a moment of unrestricted happiness. There's no doubt the Glory lads both on and off the pitch have done everything within their power to do the right thing.

I have said it before and I will say it again. These State Premiers i.e. specifically QLD and WA need to be held to account. They are quite happy to let the Women's Indian Cricket team in, and a truck load of NRL boofheads and their cohort, not to mention two entire AFL Teams for their GF respectively. Tell me why it's not bias and restriction of trade, when they allow that lot into to their states but when it comes to football, yeah sorry, no dice. Hypocrisy of the highest order. The Glory lads and the team's support personnel know that their livelihoods are on the line here, so they are going to dot the i's and cross the t's, and there's a significant degree of plausibility that everything will be done by they book A) because footballers are professional in how they go about their business and B) there's the mentality that they want to be no different to what the Celtic, Barca or Bayern lads do. On the other hand there's Bob Singlesyllabal, the Prop Forward for NRL team X, who is totally aware that preferential treatment is the norm from certain State Premiers, so hey, there's nothing to worry about and the same applies to the cross-country volleyball. I really hope that the FFA and A-League owners step up and tell a couple of lefties to pull their heads in. In return for their good grace and consideration, the FFA should ensure that not a cent of Women's WC goes to those states. My best wishes go out to the Glory lads. At this time of year, when they should be at home watching their kids open the gifts left by Santa, I really hope they are not alone in a hotel room. A) it's not showing any humanity whatsoever, and B) the plonker in charge of WA needs to be reminded that despite his self-centred, delusional belief that he is the King of WA, that if the players test negative, they should be at home with the most important part of their lives. I'm sure the Plonker will not be giving them a second thought whilst he's at home dishing out expensive gifts to his rabble. It's probably obvious that the lack of consideration and respect for guys just trying to do their job gets me absolutely furious, when biased, hypocritical behavior is exhibited for other codes. I really hope that karma comes into play and certain State Premiers are absolutely smashed at the next State elections.

You can't help but feel sympathy for Perth Glory. You also know if this were the Eagles or Dockers, the WA government would work out a deal to bring the players home for Christmas.

Hopefully this is not a serious mutation and, as many oriole hope, it is a weakening of the virus in to fomeghinv that don’t kill millions. However, it is way too wary to be sure. Denmark is reporting an increase in cases snd hospitalisations, closer to home the ABC report NSWs hospitalisations have increased 40% in a week snd Victoria by 20%. Time is needed before we can be sure

Is that the bloke who pushed for the use of hydroxychloroquine? He has been widely discredited I would have thought. One need only look at the Brazilian experience.

NEWS: Omicron reinfection rate ‘5.4 times greater than Delta’ says Imperial College London study The study by Imperial College London suggests the protection against reinfection by Omicron from past infection may be as low as 19 per cent. Professor Neil Ferguson, from Imperial College London, said: “This study provides further evidence of the very substantial extent to which Omicron can evade prior immunity, given by both infection or vaccination.

Other news that could impact the A-League and everything else: 1) Global debt has now reached $226 trillion ($316 trillion AUD). 2) Australian housing is now worth over $9 trillion, that's an increase of $2 trillion more than September 2020 and $3 trillion more from five years ago. At $9.1 trillion, Australian residential property is now worth more than the GDP of every country on earth except for those of the United States and China.

We're entering a very dangerous period, for both the A-Leagues, and even wider society. Lot's of people travelling, meeting up for Christmas, Omnicron is far more contagious, those yet to have a booster shot are vulnerable, so we're going to see a big rise in cases, and all football clubs will get swept up. It will take a few months to get those booster shots up to a critical mass, and you can only have them when they are due. Hopefully there are no supply issues.
