Wanderers inflict more derby misery on Sydney FC

By News / Wire

Western Sydney Wanderers have secured a 2-0 derby win over Sydney FC in their A-League Men encounter at CommBank Stadium.

In a dominant display on Saturday night against the club he served with distinction as a player, Rudan’s Wanderers were first to everything.

Tomer Hemed’s first-half penalty at CommBank Stadium gave them the lead before a second-half Keanu Baccus header helped secure the victory.

The result condemned Sydney to their fifth straight game without a win and leaves coach Steve Corica searching for answers.

The Wanderers signalled their intent early as stand-in captain Adama Traore tested Sydney No.1 Andrew Redmayne in the opening five minutes.

Sydney’s sole first-half chance of any promise came when Rhyan Grant whipped in a cross from the right with English striker Adam Le Fondre attempting a poorly-executed backheel rather than testing Wanderers goalkeeper Daniel Margush.

The Sky Blues struggled to contain the lively Ramy Najjarine who had two chances to put the Wanderers ahead before winning the penalty in the 37th minute when he was taken down by a lazy trip from James Donachie.

Hemed made no mistake from the spot as he blasted the ball straight down the middle for his fourth of the season as Redmayne dived to his left.

Sydney lost Elvis Kamsoba to a lower leg injury towards the end of the first half and their woes were compounded even further when Baccus netted after the break.

The Wanderers midfielder slipped the attention of Donachie at a Dimi Petratos corner and headed past Redmayne.

Corica turned to his bench, throwing Mustafa Amini and new Dutch signing Luciano Narsingh into the fray.

It seemed to have the desired effect with Narsingh immediately helping to set up Le Fondre only for the forward to hit the woodwork.

Another foray forward promised plenty but again Le Fondre was unable to force Margush into action.

The frustration could be felt among the Sky Blues fans with a number of bottles being thrown in Toure’s direction as he defended his own penalty box, although thankfully none connected.

Bernie Ibini, who had replaced Hemed, had two golden opportunities to inflict more misery on Sydney but couldn’t find the target.

that was a woeful crowd. absolutely shameful by fans in NSW - what does it take for people in that state to actually attend a match? yes covid restrictions, yes rain was coming in - but not even 15,000 to a derby is terrible. how many of that were actualy sydney fans? 1000-2000? is there a more dissapointing fanbase in the a league then sydney ? (excusing macarthur and western uni)

An interesting week of football, & some controversy that lies ahead: How will Melbourne Victory go with their ACL game & overseas travel commitments to Japan? Will Perth Glory fans be punished for throwing cans & cups over Adelaide’s Toure? It appears WSW supporters have returned. Can the Wanderers squeeze into the top 6?

You don't just get a free pass to taunt opposition fans however you like when you score.

Some very questionable abuse by Perth fans, directed to Adelaide players, after Toure’s goal. Watch the highlights. There were even cans & cups thrown onto the field. Poor form, Glory.

I would love to comment but i miss the whole match so watched the mini match, Well done to WSW for winning the game and really taken it to SFC. Rudan/snakes work is starting to pay off and i can see them in the top 6 at the expensive of SFC with in a month. Going by the mini match looks like SFC have issues one moment there hot, next there cold. And stay cold when it matters.

Just learned that the Nix v MC game has been post-poned (as in: will not be played today). Originally scheduled for 4:05 today at Leichhardt, given recent weather patterns, I guess it's no major surprise (although I do wonder whether this could have been foreseen even a few days ago, and alternative arrangements made).

Roberto- Some excellent observations made in this comment. For some time now it has been obvious if you cut down the service to Bobo and le Fevre you go a long way to cutting down Sydney's chances of scoring. but when a shrewd opponent also notes the "aging" legs of Nincevic and instructs "high pressing on him", it becomes awfully apparent that Sydney are not firing on the cylinders that create and score winning goals. Brisbane Roar ,at the other end of the table have exactly the same problem, an experienced ,clever midfielder in O' Shea, running himself to a standstill week in week out and yet nothing is done to alleviate the problem, lack of real support. That's where games are won or lost and it is glaring in both the examples I have mentioned. Cheers jb.

Hopefully more to come and from more teams. Looking forward to Perth's first game back against Adelaide - that could be impressive. In terms of atmosphere and given where Sydney and West Sydney sit a Victory v City grand final at AAMI could be a strong finish to the competition.

Talbot does look quite good. Pretty quick and can get up and down the wing. Hopefully he is like King and Gersbash and makes a go of it and keeps his spot. Narsingh looked classy from the moment he came on - he has composure and his crosses were on the mark. The funny thing with Sydney is that they're almost there. At any time you can imagine them clicking and getting a run of wins, but perhaps that's not the best outcome as it may just cover cracks that need fixing.

I don't support either side but what a great shot in the arm seeing plenty of fans and passion on both sides. It lifted my spirits seeing the A-league breathing back to life.

I was at the game last night. WSW deserved winners. Think you need to cut Corica some slack. He has been very successful over the years for you. The ACL will provide a stern challenge over the next few months. The club structure is all in place to rejuvenate the squad. You need two new CDs and a right back. Things will then improve.

SFC seemed listless last night, as Grem mentions, the aging of the squad is probably the reason. But even the younger players played with minimal energy, even someone like Caceres, who has had an excellent season thus far, appeared to be well short of his best. And how could they have let Baccus, standing at 5ft 10, easily out jump them all for that 2nd goal? I liked the look of Narsingh, expect him insert plenty of zing down the right wing. He has been there and done that, having played over 100 games for PSV, and he is in prime playing age.

Agree 100% with all of that Grem. Probably only thing I’d add is that whilst you and I agree that we could potentially see this coming, it is an indictment of corica that he didn’t and didn’t try to refresh in the off season. We’ve done a little bit of freshening up now with Narsingh who was quality when he came on but it is too little too late not only for the game last night but for the season. I thought Talbot looked ok as well. Otherwise it was fairly insipid much like rest of this season.

I won't carry on about the ref and a soft penalty that possibly changed the course of the game like supporters of other teams do, but I know if Sydney received that decision against Adelaide, Brisbane, Wellington, etc they'd be copping it on here. Without doubt they were beaten by the better team. It was a great atmosphere at Combank last night and for the good of the A League I hope those WSW supporters keep coming back. Let's see the derby back to where it should be- the best sporting event in NSW. As for Sydney, this is the season that many of us thought could happen and it has. It's been great how they have kept a group of players together for a few years, but they need to refresh their squad. I'm sure they will continue to battle on this year and they may even make the top 6, but some new players and a new approach is needed. The good thing is, when you support a team like Sydney you know they can have bad seasons, as all clubs do, but good ones will come again - that's a normal cycle, which is good for the league as a whole.
