Argentina vs Brazil locked in for another MCG 'Superclasico'

By News / Wire

South American powerhouses Argentina and Brazil are returning to the MCG for a June 11 showdown, in the lead-up to this year’s World Cup.

On Wednesday the Victorian government confirmed the ‘Superclasico’ will be played at the iconic Melbourne stadium, five years after the world football giants packed it out with more than 95,000 fans for a friendly.

“To have two of the most successful football teams in the world return to the MCG to continue their longstanding rivalry reinforces our position as one of the world’s great sporting cities and Australia’s event capital,” Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula said.

“Football is known as the world game and a match of this calibre will put millions of eyes on Melbourne and attract thousands of visitors to Victoria.”

The previous meeting between Argentina and Brazil, a World Cup qualifier in Sao Paulo September, was sensationally abandoned just minutes into the game when home health authorities forced the game to be stopped due to COVID-19 concerns involving four visiting players.

With both teams now safely qualified for Qatar 2022, the June meeting in Australia should provide Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Brazil superstar Neymar the platform to showcase their mercurial talents.

In 2017, a lone goal was enough to give Argentina victory over Brazil while 10 years earlier Messi helped the Albiceleste defeat the Socceroos 1-0 at the MCG.

The 2022 World Cup kicks off in Qatar on November 21 with the final on December 18.

Ridiculous rant. No one forced MV to move to AAMI park.

I like the looks on the visiting superstars faces though. "Who are you again? What sport do you play? Hmm never heard of it".

You seem to be confusing the rectangular stadium mafia with Melbourne Victory. Melbourne Victory were filling up the oval stadium Olympic Park which while a dump but was also dirt cheap while Docklands though they could rope them in they didnt even want to move from there because it was so much cheaper than Docklands, and they held out till Docklands made them a deal for the same price. Melbourne Victory having such a dirt cheap deal at Docklands, something which drew the ire of the AFL who stitched up four clubs to play at inflated rates to pay off the stadium. MV had no problems sharing Docklands or it being an oval. Melbourne Victory didnt welcome AAMI stadium because it was more expensive than their existing deal at Docklands and wanted to stll play their games at Docklands. How do you argue that AAMI stadium was gifted to MV somehow when its more than Docklands. You might as well argue the AFL gifted Docklands to them because its cheaper to rent. If your rent is at a decent rate you cant argue that the renter is being given anything like at AAMI, if its below market rate then you can argue that yes some subsidy is being given like at Docklands for MV, if its over the top rates like the AFL did to the four clubs it tricked into Docklands then you are paying the stadium for them.

Exactly. Now you’re getting it. When Brazil go to Japan, they’ll pose with sumo wrestlers. When they go to Ireland, they’ll pose with Gaelic footballers. In NZ, it’ll be the All Blacks. And so on. Its not a slight against Australian soccer. It’s just basic marketing/branding for an tour event. Relax.

When you are sooking, you get called a sook. It's that simple. And you are having a massive sook. You think everyone is out to oppress you. Grow up.

It’s a complete waste of time having a debate with you. When you describe others as flogs and sooks, you are playing the man, not the subject at hand. Screaming the loudest doesn’t mean you are right.

Yeah but having AFL "stars" jumping in on the photo op is like having an amateur acting ensemble getting photos with Robert De Niro or Di Caprio.

So you are having a sook because you didn't get a venue for yourself? I can imagine what the responses were by management and fans when AAMI park opened. Melbourne Storm: "Thanks for this. This is great. Terrific sightlines, convenient to get to and from by train, and a great upgrade from Olympic park." Melbourne Victory: "What? We have to share this taxpayer funded stadium!!? Waaah. We want our own! This is typical anti-football discrimination." Despot is right to be disrespectful to you. The Victorian government have tipped loads of money into football and all you can STILL do is complain that it's not good enough.

What's your point, James? Under normal circumstances it would have been a two-legged tie, but the change was announced last year - by FIFA. What could the FFA do? It was out of their hands. Of course it would have been preferred to have Australia play Peru in Australia instead of scrambling in a friendly. But again, because you seem to prefer to complain rather than be objective, the decision was taken out of the hands of the FFA. Clear? I'm sure Peru are also disappointed they can't host a leg as well, as are NZ, as are Costa Rica. But they are the rules this year. At least they are fair for all. Come on, James. Be better.

I'm surprised you went. Aren't you branded a traitor for having watched non A-league matches? How bourgeois of you.

Well here is the thing. You have Argentina and Brazil at the MCG while Australia will play in a do or die game away from home.

Yeah I know what you mean. I've been there to watch football and it's as bad as the SCG.

Actually I've since seen the full release of tickets and there are cheaper available, but as we know with the MCG, unless you're in expensive seats you're not going to be able to see much of the match

"Cricket owns the ground not AFL..." No, that's wrong. The Vic Govt owns the MCG. It is managed by the MCC. Stadium upgrades are largely paid for by the MCC, which receives the majority of its revenue from gate receipts from AFL matches. As for the photo opportunities, I think you'll find that every single sports team around the world does this. When Barca or Man Utd go to the US, they pose for photos with NFL and NBA players. It's basic events marketing - and considered a better photo op than posing with MSL players.

Cricket owns the ground not AFL, and why would they listen to clowns. The AFL have no power to stop anything, and even if they did why would they risk the wrath of one their state government sugar daddys. This match is provided some cash for a foreign organisation nothing to do with providing anything for the game here.

The only reason this match is in Australia is because they can sell the tickets for more in Australia than they can elsewhere in the world combined with the money from Vic government. Brazil and Argentina if they were in UEFA they would be rich enough not to even bother thinking There is a big difference bringing out teams to play Australia as well, and then having other matches, the timing of this seems to be more than a bit weird, as Australia are locked into a sudden death match. Its not exactly convenient for the squads to travel here either. Maybe they could play a friendly with Japan along the way. Staging an additiional friendly here is one thing, but stealing a world cup qualifier it becomes morally dubious, is Australia using its greater wealth to take something they hardly even care about from South America where this is ultimate match.

If you watched the same game 5 years ago, you’d know they very much treated it like a friendly.
