Reynolds goes beyond 2000 as Titans botch golden chance to upset depleted Broncos in nail-biter

By Paul Suttor / Expert

Broncos coach Kevin Walters couldn’t even remember how many players were absent for Saturday night’s clash with the Gold Coast but was delighted his injury- and Origin-depleted side took another step towards the club’s goal of returning to title contention.

Star prop Payne Haas is still out with his shoulder problem while the Broncos opted to rest representative trio Corey Oates, Kurt Capwell and Pat Carrigan, while young winger Selwyn Cobbo, who was knocked out early in Origin III, had been given the weekend off when the team was named on Tuesday. TC Robati and Corey Jensen were also sitting in the crowded casualty ward.

With the team weakened, skipper Adam Reynolds stepped up and became the eighth player in premiership history to hit the 2000-point milestone as the Broncos held off the Titans in a thriller at Cbus Super Stadium.

The Gold Coast had a gilt-edged chance to steal the two competition points from their local rivals but Phil Sami fumbled the ball over the line 10 minutes from full-time and Brisbane hung on for a 16-12 triumph.

Brisbane have reclaimed fifth spot and remain in the hunt for a top-four berth heading into the final seven rounds while the Titans’ slightly not-as-terrible for-and-against record is the only thing keeping them ahead of the Wests Tigers in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

They are now 11-6 for the season, meaning they’ve racked up more wins in 2022 than their combined tally from their previous two seasons.

“I just liked our tenacity there at the back end,” Walters said. “They had a lot of possession, we couldn’t seem to build any pressure and they kept bringing the ball back downfield for different reasons. And our defence stood up really well, some really good effort areas.

“Nice to get through that Origin period with a couple of wins. We don’t speak about finals footy, we just speak about each week and just trying to get better as a group, particularly our defence. I thought our scramble defence tonight was really good.

“And all those little parts of the game is what you need for us to get to where we want to go. A goal of ours in the atmosphere is for us to win premierships and that’s what we’re about as a club. We’ve thrown that out there and when that happens I don’t know but we’re heading in the right direction for that to take place.”

Titans mentor Justin Holbrook said “a couple of errors” cost them.

“There was a lot to like about the players and the performance, just not the scoreboard,” he said.

“Phil Sami back tonight off a long, lengthy injury. He probably did 99 out of 100 things right. If he just kept the ball where it was, it was a try and I’m probably sitting here [after] winning the game of footy. We’re just lacking that little bit to get the win at the moment.”

Broncos forward Jordan Riki was placed on report for a high shot on Titans debutant JoJo Fifita midway through the first half.

The scoring stalemate broke in the 29th minute after fullback AJ Brimson made a long-range kick return which led to new five-eighth Tanah Boyd winning the race to a little grubber behind the line from halfback Toby Sexton.

Brisbane left it late but finally struck back seconds from the siren when winger Deloise Hoeter scooped up a Reynolds cut-out pass to dive over in the corner.

After a minor scuffle between several players, Reynolds landed the sideline to make it 6-6 at the break.

TItans prop Jaimin Jolliffe rolled over the stripe four minutes after the resumption and despite Brisbane’s protests over a double movement, his second career try was given the green light by the bunker.

Brisbane hit back again when winger Jordan Pereira collected a bounced pass, stepped sharply off his right boot to cut the gap to two by the 50th minute.

They were in front a few minutes later when a Beau Fermor error gifted them field position and Tyson Gamble offloaded for Reynolds to make it 16-12.

The try lifted Reynolds to 2000 career points with the former Rabbitoh becoming just the eighth player in premiership history to reach the milestone. He is still a long way shy of record holder Hazem El Masri’s 2786 but overtaking that tally is not entirely out of the question for the 32-year-old half.

“I didn’t know that, it’s obviously pleasing. It’s something I’ll look back on at the end of my career but for now I’ll hopefully keep scoring some more points,” he told Fox League after the game.

Second-gamer Zac Hosking ran off Reynolds to get through a staggered defensive line in the 65th minute to stretch out to score what looked like his first NRL try but the bunker denied it because the ball grazed the grass before touched down, constituting the slightest of double movements.

The bunker again intervened in the 70th minute when the Titans thought they had levelled the scores when Sami sprinted onto a Sexton grubber but the replays showed he bobbled the putdown.

Fifita continued his impressive debut performance with a kick return from his dead-ball line into the Brisbane half late in the piece to give the Titans another opportunity to snatch victory from the visitors but they fell short at the end of the set.

Titans coach Justin Holbrook followed the Maroons’ playbook by starting Tino Fa’asuamaleaui from the bench.

“We were a bit unlucky not to get the win there but we’re improving. We’ve just got to make sure our defence is good every week,” Fa’asuamaleaui said.

Bad luck Titans but this season’s fix is already in. Ch9 has chosen Queensland for Origin and the Broncs and Cows for the 8. Gotta get all the hicks to watch the xxxx and pesticide ads

JoJo is meant be be lightning fast but Ezra had him cover. I can't wait until Erza works out how to beat the first guy. The next 5 years will be fantastic if he does

No sure where to for Dave? Holbrook has tried him as an 80 minute forward on the the left edge, shifted him to the right edge, played him reduced minutes back on the left, off the bench on the right and back to 80 minutes on the left. If the Titans weren't going so badly, he might have been punted back to Q Cup. To put it into perspective based on comparative 2022 salaries, for $1.2m you could have Isaiah Papali'i, Reuben Cotter, Jeramiah Nanai, plus Pat Carrigan and still have change left over for a development player. I mean, Zac Hoskins who is on a train and trial contract worth a packet of Samboys and a can of Coke was able to beat Fifita in every worthwhile statistic.

The knock on the Titans was they don’t get Fifita into the game, but fair crack, the bloke has no intention of having a go. Often the halves will look to him, but invariably have to cut him out because he is walking or just disinterested. I hope he has invested wisely, his next contract is going to look skinny. The work Tino got through in 20 minutes lapped Dave’s 80 minute shift.

Good to see a player named Fifita actually earn what he was being paid, for a change.

How far the Titans win if Beau Fermor was out injured ? In the end the Broncos got enough of the rub tonight and the Titans tried hard but blew it. For me Riki , Hosking & Reynolds kept the Broncos on their game. For the Titans, Sexton, Mo & Clark deserved a better result. Tino should have played more minutes , "Lazy Davey" again managed to play 80 without troubling the scorers, young brother JoJo obviously got all the family commitment, and Beau Fermor had a shocker.

Kick chase and kick pressure from Brisbane was poor all night. Kennedy and James, I thought were sub par. It's a shame Robati is down for the season... Riki, Hosking and Pereira were immense, and Lee never lets anyone down. Probably Mam's best game behind an often dominated pack. For the Titans, I thought Big Mo and Tino were immense. And as much as I love Boyd and Sexton, I really thought that if Fogarty were still there, Titans win. Just needed some composure at crucial moments.
