Roar manager Moon under pressure after Australia Cup-set

By TheSecretScout / Roar Guru

Upsets in knockout competitions are one of the reasons we love football.

Who can forget Thomas Love’s run to score the winner for Adelaide City against the Western Sydney Wanderers in the first ever Cup-set several years ago, or Adelaide United’s woeful performance in an extra time defeat against QNPL side Redlands United?

While those results were diabolical, they have since been overshadowed by Brisbane Roar’s shock loss in the semi-finals against Sydney United 58.

The same Sydney United 58 finished eighth in the NSW NPL this season, which included a 6-1 loss to the Sydney FC Youth team.

Regardless of what you may feel towards sections of their fan base, for a semi-professional club to make it through to the showpiece deserves credit.

Brisbane led twice in the match, only to cruelly lose 3-2 in extra time.

They had twice as many shots, over 60 per cent possession, missed a penalty and an embarrassing air swing at a likely goal that would leave many Sunday pub-league players blushing.

However, a deeper dive into how the highly fancied side threw this game away is needed.

For context, Brisbane are deep into their preseason, while United 58’s season finished some weeks ago. This part of preseason can be particularly gruelling, even for seasoned professionals.

It’s not unusual for players to really start feeling the toll and legginess in matches due to this, as seen by Brisbane’s opponents, Adelaide, in the quarter-final clash.

United 58’s Edensor Park does have an intimidating feel to it, the supporters group can be passionate, letting opposing players know when they’ve made a mistake.

The Roar are also yet to play their first-choice defence, with players shuffling in and out of the infirmary ward almost at a weekly interval.

Manager Warren Moon is not the type to unload verbally on his playing group after a loss against a semi-professional side. But he will start to see the good will he’s been afforded due to his work with young players evaporate if he is unable to implement the right philosophy and tactics.

Moon has an overall win percentage of 35 per cent since taking over from Robbie Fowler. His recruitment, player selection and tactics have left even the most hardcore supporters frustrated and bemused.

if Brisbane miss out on playing finals football in season 2022-23, there is every chance he will sacked – especially since he was lucky to retain his position after the side finished second to bottom last season.

Big-money recruit Charlie Austin has been used bizarrely on Australian soil, regularly collecting the ball from deep -rather than being perched in the box to finish a move, which was his bread and butter during his career in England.

There is energy, pace and skill in wide positions, as well as creativity in the middle of the park.

While defensively Brisbane has a good mix of youth and experience, Moon needs to decide on his first-choice goalkeeper. The club have also had to deal with the ‘Corey Brown’ problem that has lingered since January.

With four of their first five matches at home, Brisbane would be expecting a good return of goals and points and could be classed as a dark horse for this upcoming season.

However, if they start poor, the blowtorch will be further increased on Moon.

two coaches in particular, Aloisi and Fowler, moved on players who are playing elsewhere and well. Kye Rowles proved Aloisi a poor judge of potential. Fowler moved on pretty much everybody, some still going quite well elsewhere.

"they had a good defence record last season" Yeah, you may say that because BR's ranking of GA is 7th last season at 39. But is that good record? My assumption is that "if a team has a strong defence, more goals can be scored (that means bigger GF number". It is because that the opponents may open up more when they are not leading. The other aspect is the quality. Many goals conceded were scored easily by the opponents. I believe in a strong defence first. I am reading Ange's book. He believes in attack. He instils it. On the other hand, Mourinho's tactics were rather conservative. As for Moon, despite change from 3-4-3 to 4-4-2, BR still cannot defend well. Not good enough!

Not sure that is the case. just because a player is deemed "not wanted" by a coach, does not mean they are not good enough for us. on the flip side we have seen plenty of Roar players "cast off" only to go on and be successful elsewhere. Some time the player just does not fit the culture or style. Robbie Kruse, D'Agostino, Donachie, we all players moved on by the Roar at one point (I am sure Lion could list off far more than that). Nick Fitzgerald did quite well at PG for a few years. Sometimes it is just about gettting thcombnation right. Coutinhio at Liverpool was amazing, at Barca?????

I dont think the first 11 is the issue. If he can get them on the park, it looks like a competitive team. I think the issue is depth. It is great to see Moon bring in so much youth, but you cant fill out the team with promoted youth players. We still need another 4 or 5 "starters" on the bench pushing for that starting spot, with a handful of youth ready for when their chance comes. Not sure if that is a Moon philosophy to promote youth or a Bakrie funding decision.

I think their problem is attack not defence. They are, and have been abysmal in the attacking third for years. They certainly don't have the fearsome goal scoring reputation of years gone by where we used to sit in the stands and even if we were behind at halftime there would inevitably be a tidal wave of attack and usually goals in the second half for the win. The anticipation that was created in the crowd by their attacking potential was what people loved to be a part of. As I recently told the club in their game day experience survey...the brand of football they now play is effing boring and if they want to improve the game day experience they need to forget about run on songs, fireworks and hand clapping chants and fix what's going on on the field.

Yorke showed he is a potential title threat tonight. He has Arzani and Toure performing. Holman he moved deeper into the midfield and was a key ball winner. Oakliegh Cannons are tough in the first part of the game and then fade away. They did come unstuck with losing a central defender and switching the striker to left back. Moon is a joke compared to Yorke its night and day.

Lionheart - you continue to follow the "ins and outs" at Roar and pass comment but yet you never discuss the obvious,if a player is tried and tested in the ALM by other clubs and yet is allowed to move, the question has to be posed ,"if he is not good enough for them is he good enough for us" ?????. There are those who follow football religiously who would point out the negativity contained in that question. In effect, how do you build a successful, winning team, by procuring players who are in effect "cast -offs" from other clubs in the same competition.????. The last part of that statement is important, you are not bringing then back from a much better standard of football , but the same comp.!!!!!! An extremely difficult task and not one that should be undertaken by an extremely inexperienced (in that league) coach .That is what we have been witnessing at Roar over the last few seasons. I don't have to spell out names to such an experienced supporter as you but I know you will get my message. There are exceptions to this and one good example is the Roar's Neville (signed by Fowler???) who has been around the traps but is still a defender to be reckoned with. This the quandry at Roar, between signing "cast offs" from other clubs, or promoting youngsters into a top team before they are ready, they have now found themselves as an "also ran" team in the ALM, much to the disgust of the fans like yourself who constantly try to praise their efforts, but kicked in the teeth for trying. Cheers jb.

one of the best, not the best. They had four games where they leaked badly (ok, 3 not 4) but generally, they were very hard to score against. Defence, when fit, was not their problem. It was, and may still be, scoring.

When did they let in 4 goals? Your confusing Roar with Phoenix and Macarthur maybe. One of the best in the league? No it wasn't 39 goals . MV were clearly the best and considering how bad their keeper was with 25. The problem is while Lescano was unfit when he first came but he wasn't there for 90 minutes let alone 120m , Roar have a lot better scoring now, but if Austin and Danzaki and others dont improve their fitness and Moon has them on all the time, they will conceed more this season.

moving to Glory. They picked up Jelacic too, Roar academy lad and they recently signed David Williams. I don’t see who Roar will use up front – Lofthouse and Dehmie are not up to A League. They’ve signed Armiento ex Glory ex Adelaide. ??

Who is going to take Ivanovic? He is lucky to be at an A-league club the way he is going.

Couldn’t agree more JB, we all want a team battling for the top. I’m not sure who this someone else is. No one’s putting their hand up and previous local ventures have been a bit of a disaster. I’m sure if someone’s got the money they’d have a very good chance of getting another QLD team in the A League. Did anyone bid when they last expanded? I might add, after Monday’s game I heard one media commentator rave about what a great game it was and great advertisement for the A League, and another say it was terribly boring and Roar had to be the most boring team ever. There’s no analysis applied, lose and you’re the worst, win and all is forgiven. When I first started following Roar the main criticism I heard was they imported their coaches and didn’t give local players a fair go.

they had a good defence record last season, one of the best in the league. Their record was trashed by a couple of games where they let in four goals, but otherwise they conceded very few. They missed Aldred and Neville on Monday night, and Frecke (hopefully) is not the regular keeper.

The problem with Brisbane Roar is the defence. This has been debated. JB has pointed out that the the number of goals scored met world average. We can see Moon has been changing continuously. Even after changing to 4-4-2 from 3-5-2, we still can see easy loss of goals. Should Moon fail to fix this, Brisbane Roar will be at the lower half of the table in this 2022-23 season. We can see that Moon does not have good recruiting skill. The young players under his mentoring are good, but not brilliant. Moon is a good guy but in soccer it is relentless.

Lionheart - Forget just for a moment that you are a dyed -in-the-wool Roar fan and put yourself in the shoes of a man who likes to be entertained by good football. For some time now Roar fans of yesteryear have been treated to a mish mash of football and it is only now that these same people are voting with their feet and staying away in their thousands. What the management at Roar have missed is the fact that fans, especially Australian fans, like to watch a winning team, and for a team that has grown used to losing, the end surely has to be faced, start winning, start representing Queensland in the only truly national league, and start thinking and acting like a professional club. All this talk about being a good stepping stone for young players is so much hog wash if those same players are playing in a losing side. If Roar want to be recognised as a development club they should get to hell out of the A-League for in past years Brisbane fans have shown they want a team that battles for top four positions, and there is nothing strange about that desire, Roar are supposed to reflect all that is good in Qld football and they have not done that for more than a few years. The ALM is the pinnacle of Australian football and if a club is not prepared to do the hard yards in becoming a top side, that is a winning team, they have to go and give someone else a go. That is a fact of life not being faced at Roar. Cheers jb.

Rugby league is big in Qld, but same in NSW , and AFL is massive in Vic and SA. Shouldn’t be an excuse. I don’t see how Roar support is as bad as the naysayers keep telling us, just compare the crowd figures including finals (discount the derbies). Of course they have to improve and for Roar, that means results. I’ve been very surprised at the number of people, not just locals who loudly rip Roar apart, some journos (or ex.) and others with a voice. I really don’t get it, they always start and end with the Bakries. They never mention previous owners or suggest who might take over. My guess is they have their noses are out of joint over a job/ mates job or club issue, but I don’t know. Add a run of poor seasons and the bad vibes spread like a fire. But on coaches, NPLQ Olympic FC coach, Ben Cahn who has a big reputation taking them from dot to many grand finals appearances in a row, has moved on. Don’t know where to, but he is highly rated. Moon had a very good record before Roar too, and lots of calls across the game to give an NPL coach a go. You can’t say Roar are backward in giving young/upcoming coaches and players a go, might even be their achilles heel.

absolutely must start well with 4 of the first 5 matches at home (bulls, city, wanderers (a) victory, sydney) there are some tricky games in that run, but anything over 10 points from the 15 available would be a bonus

This is a huge season for Roar. Consider this: QLD is a Rugby League state, plus the Dolphins will be starting soon. Roar need to absolutely jump out of the gates at full speed.
