Why Tim David should not be in the Australian T20 team

By Gabe F / Roar Rookie

Many of Fox Cricket’s reporters have said that Tim David is an absolute lock to play in the T20 World Cup in 2022. They say he can add explosive firepower to the team which won the World Cup in 2021.

They say Steve Smith is “too methodical” and cannot play limited-overs cricket. Whilst this may be true, I don’t believe David is the man.

In the suburbs of Subiaco lies a 25-year-old cricketer whose firepower surpasses many players.

He is known as one of Australia’s brightest batting prospects and has hit sixes way into the stands of the SCG.

That man is none other than Josh Philippe.

Playing for the Sydney Sixers in the BBL, Josh Philippe is a solid rock at No.3 in the batting order. With a solid average of 30 (rounding up), he is one of the competition’s best players, ranked at No.13 in the whole league.

He should be taking David’s place.

Albeit, he didn’t play as well as he could have in last year’s international, but surely, he can get a second chance for a player of his caliber.

David has played a lone eight matches in the BBL, Australia’s main way of talent scouting for the T20Is. Philippe has played 63.

David’s top score is 46. Not bad by any means, but compare that to Phillipe’s 99 not out, it seems rather low.

Tim David has played many overseas competitions such as the IPL and the Pakistan Super League. This may be where the team selectors get their information.

Compared with Steve Smith’s stats overseas, Tim David is nowhere near as experienced as he needs to be.

Let alone Philippe who is yet to seriously venture overseas, apart from a brief successful stint in the IPL that was sadly cut short due to personal reasons.

There is also one more thing we haven’t mentioned just yet.

Philippe is an amazing wicketkeeper.

This adds to his already impressive resume.

In BBLl09, Philippe won the club’s most valuable player award, defeating fellow superstars Moises Henriques and ever-reliable Jordan Silk.

During that season, he passed Australian legend Brad Haddin’s record of dismissals for the BBL – 23.

Philippe has the flexibility to stand in for Matthew Wade at any stage, presenting a larger threat behind the stumps, as the two wouldn’t be as affected by fatigue.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Philippe has the skill range to strike the ball at 360 degrees, unlike other competitors who tend to rely on cover drives and big sweep shots to get over the line.

Tim David certainly does possess skills far higher than many competitors. Perhaps there is a spot for him in this team, he would be more than a handy inclusion.

But I don’t think he has the skill set to keep Phillipe out of the 11. He is just so reliable and trustworthy, that you get that, ‘Oh, we’re still good’ feeling. We will certainly need this feeling, whilst we’re up against bowlers like Tommy Curran and Lungi Ngidi.

Wade is done David can’t field Finch done and Warner probably Cut and dried. Get Phillipe and Inglis in.

Must be the stupidest write up for awhile. Tim David makes big bucks playing in the the strongest T20 comps on the planet. Phillippe plays BBL. While Phillippe was the logical replacement for Inglis in the squad the selectors went for Green. They obviously don't rate him highly enough. The assumption is that if Wade suffered a tournament ending injury, Phillippe or Carey would be parachuted straight into the team. The trouble is Phillippe was touted as a world beater and has gone on to prove that he is not. But still a highly skilled batter and wicketkeeper.

Yet Stoinis is an automatic selection every single match. Honestly I would love to see AUS get flogged by SL and ENG just to show how cruddy the current XI really is. This is coming from an Aussie supporter. Bowling lacks imagination or variation. The batting lineup is pure trash....if Warner fails then AUS seems to lose over 90% of the time chasing a reasonable or high score. If Finch wins the toss and bowls again tonight he should be thrown out immediately. Changes for ENG match (which should but wont happen) Stoinis gone (replaced with Green) Starc gone (replaced with Ellis) David gone (replaced with Smith) AUS v SL: SL by 34 runs.

Do you think strike rates (as well as totally different roles) might have something to do with it - 160 v 110 at international T20 level and 163 v 137 at the next level down? While averages are almost as irrelevant as top scores in comparing batsmen in T20, David's averages of 36 (international) and 31 (domestic) also compare favourably to Philippe's (14 and 29). Interesting also that David has actually played a fair few more games at each level - 23 v 10 internationally, 136 v 84 domestically. I'll take your word for it that Philippe has played a lot more BBL games than David - but is it not possible that games David has played outside the BBL were of at least a comparable standard to BBL games, and that it's actually good to have played more in conditions outside the BBL and against a wider range of opponents?

No, they play vastly different roles. I'd have no issue with Philippe in but he's a top order player so it should be at the expense of Finch or Maxwell. Tim David is a finisher at 6/7 and good ones don't grow on trees. Philippe has better stats than David primarily down to the fact he's batting for longer. You are comparing apples to oranges.

This has to be satire right? Right?? They play entirely different roles within the team, you might as well say Nathan Ellis should get his spot. Oh and David's 41 game BBL career is only slightly longer than the 8 games you've said he's played, perhaps you were mistakenly looking at the career of David Tim instead?

I’ve never met anyone with the first name Smith. But if you assure me they exist, then yes, ban him for life.

Both Tim David and Josh Philippe have two first names and are therefore unacceptable.

Have to say, I was surprised with Philippe wasn't named as Inglis' replacement.
