Honours even between Adelaide and Sydney in front of a sold-out Coopers Stadium

By Christian Montegan / Roar Pro

A late equaliser from star forward Adam Le Fondre helped Sydney FC salvage a 1-1 draw away to an impressive sell-out crowd in Adelaide on Good Friday.

Adelaide arrived on the back of an 11-match unbeaten streak and looked to keep within touching distance of league leaders Melbourne City, with the Sky Blues needing a result to maintain their top-six place.

Steve Corica named an unchanged starting XI from last week’s 3-3 draw with Western United, while the home side opted for just one rotation as Jay Barnett replaced Spanish veteran Isaías in midfield.

The early momentum was with the Reds who managed to exploit spaces in behind, forcing a few opportunities from set pieces that required Sydney shot-stopper Andrew Redmayne to be called into action.

Adelaide’s great football resulted in Craig Goodwin and Zach Clough coming within inches of giving Adelaide the lead a few minutes separate from each other to have alarm bells ringing for Sydney.

That didn’t provide a big enough warning, with Clough causing havoc once again down the right-hand side to set up Goodwin, only to be denied by an incredible goal-line clearance from Jack Rodwell after 15 minutes.

It took 25 minutes for the match to open up, allowing Sydney to create a glorious opportunity from the run of play which allowed Joe Lolley to find room inside the area and take on a couple of defenders, only to spray his shot just wide of the target.

Corica’s men successfully stung the life out of the contest for a 15-minute spell, managing to silence the home support.

Besides a few half-chances in a physically demanding half, both teams went into the sheds goalless at the break.

Just three minutes from the restart, the crowd found their voices again, as Craig Goodwin converted at the back-post for his 11th goal of the campaign despite another Rodwell clearance attempt off the line to give Adelaide a deserved lead.

Rain bucketing down after an hour of proceedings didn’t help Sydney with their passing and build-up play, failing to execute the final ball with crucial minutes ticking down to find an equaliser.

Frustrations grew for the away side the longer the match progressed by taking the initiative on the attack but lacking the spark and creativity to produce anything clear-cut. That soon changed in the 72nd minute, as Joe Gauci denied Lolley from close range in what was Sydney’s best chance of the evening thus far.

A quality passage of play allowed substitute Adam Le Fondre to guide the ball past Gauci to level the scores which on the balance of play seemed warranted.

A frantic final five minutes followed suit, witnessing end-to-end action with the likes of teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda and Max Burgess offering an attacking threat.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Both teams were forced to settle for a share of the spoils in front of over 14,000 fans, marking Adelaide’s biggest crowd in seven years.

The Reds stay put and host Western United next Sunday, while Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory do battle in two days’ time in an attempt to close the gap on Sydney FC in a dramatic race for finals action.

I’ll have one Burgess over two Lolleys any day. If fact you could argue that all the Aussie-born strikers are better than Lolley.

Now Les Murray is gone SBS has nothing to do with football. The world cup rights were a result actually of Les friendship with Hargitay and Blatter and indirect compensation from Blatter for the Qatar ripoff they got rights up to 2022 at mates rates. What did they do they onsold the rights for the Optus disaster.

Luckily the Wanderers have added a few more. Hopefully the game is high quality.

Someone has to break the news to the APL that no matter what day you schedule Macathur to play, the crowds aren't going to be much different. Sad reality but it's true. Adelaide-Sydney was set up perfectly for a Saturday night blockbuster

Why wouldn’t this game be the Saturday night game? Why would you have a team that draws around 3000 spectators as your main game? Crazy decision in terms of the look.

Will City perform well in it though? That’s the question and the only things that matters

I think Lolley suffers because we pin too many hopes on him!

I doubt its over yet… theoretically AU can still catch City in the ALM… ok I’ve done the maths City was 6 pts ahead of AU 2022 so AU would need to win by 6pts at least and can only win by 5 so it seems your friend is right

My theory is that people developed a little hate when Sydney was winning a lot & now they all want revenge!

Ive beeen avoiding Ch 9 for a while now where psosible for that reason & the things they do much worse than other channels - like claim something is live when its not, sensationalise 'new's (I used to love A Current Affair biut since Wendt its been nothing but dodgy plumbers etc), lie about viewing times, and cut in with pointless 'news' updates .

Could easily put up an argument that he's been Sydney’s best player this season. Burgess has also impressed and I think the change of club has done him good

Government should be making it mandatory for SBS to hold the rights for any major football event. The only problem is that they don't care...

That's a bit harsh. I think he's been very good value and is constantly going at defenders. He keeps that up for 90 mins and creates lots of chances for others.

Forget ch 7. Heaven knows why they have the rights to the womens WC.

Obviously can't rely on those free-to-air networks but at the same time, it's important for the growth of football here if we want to see it go to the next level. Should be some sort of agreement in the contract with ch10 where they need to promote the league for a specific amount of hours. Even ch7 need to start promoting the Women’s World Cup more with 3 months to go
