Larkham hails Lolesio's response in Reds rout after Eddie Jones snub and 'tough conversation'

By News / Wire

Stephen Larkham has no doubt Noah Lolesio still has a Wallabies future after the ACT Brumbies five-eighth’s “superb” response to his Test squad snubbing.

The 23-year-old, 12-Test playmaker wasn’t named in Eddie Jones’ first Australian squad last Sunday.

But on Friday he put that aside with a perfect seven-from-seven kicks and poised game management as the Brumbies slowly picked the Queensland Reds apart for their first win in Brisbane since 2015.

The 52-24 victory shot his side to 6-1 and second on the Super Rugby Pacific live ladder, with coach Larkham saying it had simply been more of the same from his No.10.

“There was a bit of pressure on Noah this week; he had a tough conversation with Eddie on Sunday,” Larkham said.

“He’s just stepped up to the challenge, hasn’t he?”

Asked if Lolesio still had a Test future, Larkham said: “Oh yeah definitely, no doubt about it.”

“He’s got a responsibility to lead this team around the paddock and has been doing that in the first six rounds no issues and his kicking game was superb,” he said.

“He’s got a big impact on the way we play.”

Captain Allan Alaalatoa credited his pivot for their slow take-down of the hosts, who led 14-7 and then 17-14 just shy of halftime.

“It was something we were aware of and understood,” he said. “It was going to be a grind and it was tonight.”

Reds lock Angus Blyth was red-carded for a late, high head clash with Corey Toole that connected with his chin, ruling the Brumbies winger out with concussion.

“It was bad, wasn’t it?” Larkham said of the knock that left Toole stumbling as he attempted to find his feet.

“But it was just careless; no-one’s going out there to intentionally hurt someone else with a high shot.

“It happens with second rowers, who are a bit uncoordinated.

“He’s pulled up okay … but we’ve got to take this one pretty seriously.”

Passit2me Perhaps. You are right. Some people need a wake up call with a very loud alarm clock.

It seems being left out has had the desired effect on Tate and Noah. Some players need to receive a shock before they look deeper inside themselves to discover more. As a result, they may grow significantly this year as a result and be highly competitive contenders for 2024. Seems pretty clever to me.

Francis, so it seems being left out has had the desired effect no? Some players need to receive a shock before they look deeper inside themselves to discover more. Seems pretty clever to me.

12 tests and he stills stands far too deep for the Wallabies, is no real threat himself because he doesn’t take it to the line to occupy defenders and goes missing during long periods of Wallaby games. He isn’t learning. At what point does the Wallaby coach decide we need to look at someone else? It seems that point has arrived. No point in pumping up his Brumbies success as some are doing, if he’s not bringing the presence needed to the Wallabies. Carter Gordon looks to be far more aggressive and instinctive, he makes himself a genuine threat as well as an organiser like all good 10’s do. Real deal? Next great hope? Not hearing much of that from anyone else. He’s in the squad to be looked at. At 24 Rebels games, Carter’s had almost twice as much experience as Noah had before he was put into a Wallaby jersey, which was my point. He hadn’t even taken his professional training wheels off before running out for the Wallabies, no base of experience and instinctive confidence developed that is needed at this level. As a result, his Wallaby performances were very inconsistent and he seemed to lose a lot of confidence. Remember, QC and Foley are in the squad also. I agree with your views on Donaldson, bit of a mystery pick.

He’s played 12 Tests. 5 Again the ABs. 3 against SA. He’s 23. World class goal kicker. He plays behind a set of Test forwards who rarely win breakdown. He’s not a good as Cooper and not nearly as good as Larkham seems to be the conclusion of many. Isn’t one of the rep 4 Australian 10s Carter Gorden has played 24 games for the Rebels. No tests. No finals. He’s the real deal. He’s the next great hope. Donaldson occasionally plays 10 for the Tahs. Had a good game for Australia A last year. 10 minutes of Test Rugby. Not much form this year. Like what we see.

Agree Hunters. The lock I used to play rugby with at school in the mid 80’s, had the nickname Unco. He did go on to play for NSW 2nds, but man, he could scarcely clap and talk at the same time. We took great joy in making fun of him at every opportunity.

I get the feeling Noah needs a season AWAY from the international competition. He may well look comfortable with the Brumbies, but he does not look comfortable in a Wallabies jersey. Out of necessity, he was thrust into the Wallabies spotlight (in the teams most critical position) during his very first SR season, well before he was ready. Being included, then dropped, then included, then dropped from the Wallabies all over again, will only further dent his confidence. It’s the last thing he needs. SR and Wallabies are 2 very different beasts. The main difference being the high need for experience and confidence to perform well in the green and gold. Let him get at least a full and uninterrupted SR season under his belt, further develop his confidence and intuition for the role, then perhaps have another Wallabies crack in 2024.

Yes, imagine how well the Brumbies could be going if Noah wasn't holding them back

I wasn't aware of his style. Now I understand. I have a similar but not quite the same thing happening, where the things I say straight seem to inspire laughter.

It’s odd that a 10 with such universally acknowledged shortcomings has the highest win rate of any of the local 10s for and that the Brumbies have a habit of winning close games at the same time Noah kicks at 6 or 7 from 8. Lucky I guess.

Where have I said that my opinion on Rugby matters is better than the journalist? Your the one criticising Eddie Jones and holding the journo up on a pedestal. As if to suggest he (and you) know more about Rugby than Eddie and his, as you put it, “so called international experience”. This is a classic example of confirmation bias. You are saying Nathan is smarter than Eddie because you agree with him. It has nothing to do with his credentials or experience.

You mean I am the only one in the website who criticises the Wallabies coach? Try engaging your brain before putting your mouth into gear. You may think Nathan Williamson is green and not as smart as you, but he got a paid job as a sports analyst and a sports columnist. The thing is this: Your arrogance in all your polemics so far is that you know damn well Nathan Willlamson is not here to defend himself against your insulting remarks about him. That says more about you shamelessly ranting and mocking and belittling him in here, than about him. Be an adult.

My guess is that Larkham delivered that line with a straight face since that’s how he delivers most of his lines. But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t taking the piss. Very funny.

You really don’t see the irony, do you. You, a nobody by your own definition, anonymously criticises and belittles the Wallaby coach and use an article from a very green journalist as backup. And then have a go at me for criticising his credentials in comparison to the Eddie Jones? It’s not just hypocritical. It’s laughable.

>It happens with second rowers, who are a bit uncoordinated. Tadh Beirne and Tadh Furlong would like a word with you, Mr Larkham. Or perhaps you are talking about Australian locks, which is why modelling the team strategy on Ireland's is not a goer here?

So you are smarter than Nathan Williamson? Go try and take his job instead of ranting with me about his job versus Eddie Jones’s job. Nathan Williamson may not be a sports analyst to you, but his employers think he is. At least he puts his money where his mouth is. And he has an audience where advertisers are paying for. I don’t know your occupation but to look down and belittling at other people’s profession says a lot about who you are. Never mind you think your thinking is so much deeper than mine. I hope you had eaten more salt than me to say that, if you can understand that saying. At least Nathan Williamson earns his keep, even if you think you are smarter than him. His job is not to write articles to report minute by minute progress of the game if that is what you think that is his job. Get a life.

Are you for real? He’s not an analyst. He’s paid to write content. It’s as shallow as your own understanding. Perhaps that’s why you like it so much.
