Roosters' poor form can be fixed: The three changes Robinson should make to get season back on track

By theminirabs / Roar Rookie

They have faded to 10th on the NRL ladder and were the victims of a demolition job on Friday night, courtesy of the Penrith Panthers, and now Sydney Roosters fans are asking questions about their team.

After their gutsy win over the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland, where they kept their opposition scoreless, the Roosters were flying high at the end of round nine and sitting equal second.

This is a great example of how quickly things can change, especially in rugby league.

Their loss to the struggling North Queensland Cowboys in Magic Round brought them back to reality, but with a team with the players they possess, it did not appear to be too much cause for concern.

After Friday’s 48-4 loss at the hands of the premiers, fans could not believe what they were watching from a side which prided itself on defence.

Captain James Tedesco and Coach Trent Robinson were understandably very sombre in the post-match press conference with the three-time premiership winning coach blaming himself for the display, saying that he ‘hasn’t got his team ready’ for the back-to-back losses.

Now, in saying this, they are only 10th and due to the close nature of the competition, they are only one win outside the top four, so it isn’t that bad right?

Well, it’s more the manner they have lost in over the last two weeks with the roster they have, that has saddened and honestly confused most fans.

There are many fans and pundits calling for Robinson’s head, claiming the supercoach should be moved on at the end of the season – that is crazy talk.

Robinson has won three premierships and was the first coach to win back-to-back premierships this century, so the belief that he isn’t the best man for the Roosters, personally, is just unbelievable and flat out disrespectful.

In saying this, he, and his coaching staff could make a few changes which could bring their season back on track.

1. Bring Sam Walker back (when fully recovered from injury)

Sam Walker was demoted to NSW Cup ahead of the Roosters’ Anzac Day clash against the Dragons. There were reports he was dropped for different reasons, including his defence, his lack of chemistry with Luke Keary and his attack.

Now they were all valid points, and after the loss against the Sharks a few weeks back, changed needed to be made. However, since he has been dropped, both the Roosters’ attack and defence has actually deteriorated with them only scoring TWO tries in their last two games.

He was the rookie of the year a couple of years ago, touted as a future Origin player, and has the talent and the work ethic. He should be brought back into the game-day line-up at halfback or in the utility role on the bench, like he was at the end of 2021.

2. Move Joseph Suaalii back to the wing

Joseph Suaalii has been one of the most talked about NRL players in 2023, and that’s been due to his future contract with the Wallabies, being signed only weeks ago.

Now, there have been reports that he should be shown the door and released from the Roosters club, again, crazy talk. He needs to be there, at least till the end of this year, due to, if not for anything else, the Roosters lack of extra outside backs.

He was moved to the centres to get more involved in the play due to his freak talent, and it was a move that should have worked. Unfortunately, especially over the last few weeks, he has been found out defensively and we shouldn’t forget that he was in contention for NSW Blues selection last year, and that was for his wing play.

He is an absolute freak, incredibly talented and deserves all the accolades he gets, but for now, he should be moved back to wing to rediscover his 2022 form.

3. Move the ball more and complete better

Now these are fundamental fixes. The Roosters have scored the second-fewest points and have only scored two tries in the last two games.

Their attack has been stagnant and there has been a lot of sideways and passive movement.

One thing to note is the tries they scored, came from when they ran with a lot of strong intent.

However, the difficulty is, the way to ascertain the confidence to move the ball and play free flowing, is to complete better. The Roosters have completed at less than 70% for the last two weeks and haven’t completed over 80% since the loss against the Sharks in round seven.

This needs to change and Robinson will be acknowledging this specific issue over the next few weeks because they will be found out by top-ranked teams, like they were on Friday night, if they continue this.

The Roosters’ season is far from gone, and with all the talent they have, they will be in the top eight, however, how high they finish, is up to them and whether or not they can rediscover their 2022 end-of-season form.

Thanks for the feedback, re the defence, the reason I said to put Suaali’i back to the wing is because he has struggled defensively in different games at centre this year. They finished the 22 regular season great, but in that EF game against the bunnies, a lot of players lost their heads unfortunately, I will admit that. The Bondi wall has struggled this year, that’s no secret, however it’s their attacking footy that I believe is their bigger problem considering how many attacking weapons they do have. They will work it out though, I’m expecting a response on Friday.

notice nothing there about improving there defence conceded 48 points last week bringing walker back isnt going to solve that there defence is on a par with the tigers and remember there narrative at the start of the year how they are going to throw the ball around do that and your error rate increases and you need to back that up with exceptional defence there goes your third point that leaves moving sualii back to the wing and you talk how they finished the 22 season all i remember is the meltdown against souths they have bigger problems than that im afraid

Flicka is back in firsts but nan had an sudden unexpected blockage to her coaching pursuits. Dragoons have named Ryan Carr as interim coach and apparently they dated a while back. It seems they made some cooking videos that nan doesn’t want circulated. I can’t work it out, she’s a pretty good cook, but when I suggested she should send them in to one of the chef shows as a contestant she choked on her martini olive. Anyway, I ran her up there for a club discussion, he pulls her aside, whispers in her ear and suddenly she pulls out!! Doesn’t explain to me so I have no idea, she’s just out of the picture now. PS Dufstar is not coming back, that was looked at but apparently he has too much baggage…

I watch the game from an above view at the front of the stand at Allianz, and having Walker and Keay in the defensive line does highlight some weaknesses. They are 2 spot players, one each side of the ruck.. while they both make tackles, they never dominate and what happens off the back of that is the problem. Teams just spread to their location then roll on. The difference with Manu in the line in 6 was noticeable, however Penrith tore them apart through the middle....but whilest the chooks were poor, I don't under estimate how good Penrith were. The chooks are a middle of the table team at the moment....around the 6 to 12 mark... I don't see anything they can do that will change that. They'll have some good games and put some wins together, but if all teams are at their best, I don't see the chooks beating the current top few....or even being in their league right now. If anything I would rather Sam and Manu in the halves with Suali back to wing.... Smith and Momorovki to centre...Keary has served us well, but a tough decision may need to be made. I am always a peasamist though...... but you know when your team is going to have a crack, I just don't see it this year.

I don't think anyone should be referred to as a "supercoach" unless Darryl Eastlake says they are.

Always a big fan of the MiniRabs work ... I like to deepen the voice and read the sentences out loud in the manner of the great man himself ... with short excited phrases ... occasionally letting fly with "That's not a try ... that's a miracle!!" at the end of a paragraph.

Agreed mate, Robbo is a top 5 coach of the last 25 years. He coached the Roosters to a premiership in his first year and like you said, transformed the culture. All they need is 2-3 close wins and they will be back in business.

Thanks for the comment, yeah it’s an interesting one regarding Keary. I personally don’t think he is a 7, I think his style is being a 6 with Walker being the perfect half for them. However, he has won 3 comps and was a Clive Churchill medalist in one of those GFs, he is too good a player to not rediscover his best form. Must win against St George Illawarra this week, for both clubs…..

I did answer that... weirdly some of my posts - a select few, disappear off the radar for a while and then strangely re-appear!! I noted that as my nan was looking for 7 years the negotiations had stalled... So she's currently available.. for coaching I mean. But if you had anything else in mind, I did pinch her Tinder profile pic for my new Avatar.
