Moylan moved on: Sharks free up salary space after veteran makes Super League switch

By News / Wire

Matt Moylan has been released by the Cronulla Sharks from the final year of his contract after signing a two-year deal with Super League club Leigh Leopards.

The 32-year-old playmaker, who played 102 NRL games for the Sharks after 89 with Penrith, lost his No.6 position to Braydon Trindall towards the end of the 2023 season.

Leigh, who won the 2023 Challenge Cup final under head coach Adrian Lam, have confirmed the signing of Moylan who is set to partner Lachlan Lam in the halves.

His departure helps Cronulla to enter the player market after making no substantial signings in the off-season or be able to retain the likes of utility Connor Tracey, who is being pursued by St George Illawarra.

Leopards head of rugby Chris Chester confirmed Moylan’s signing and the role of the head coach in the recruitment coup.

“Adrian got on a plane and met with Matt and his agent, Allan Gainey, face to face,” Chester said.

“He was able to explain what we want as a club, what we are looking to achieve, and his own coaching philosophy.

“Matt is a world-class player and his CV speaks for itself. Everyone I’ve spoken to says he’s an unbelievable person, and one of those who leads with his actions on the field.

“Matt will take us to the next level. He’s a running half … a good goalkicker and he’s a good defender.

“It’s a huge statement of intent by the club and great for our town. It’s huge for us as a club that we have attracted a top-quality halfback over from the NRL.”

Moylan played three State of Origin games for NSW and one Test for Australia, all in 2016.

" Connor Tracey told to get on his bike too. So he’ll most likely be at the Dragons next season. Even without Moylan & Tracey the first grade positions available, aren’t enough. Atkinson is a halfback playing fullback. Dykes is a fullback that plays in the halves , was missing all last season through injury. They had Puru from Penrith at halfback last season in NSW Cup. Then they bought Ison a fullback from Penrith for next season. Who’s up to NSW Cup level too. Plus Kennedy is the permanent first grade fullback." A couple of them might as well already get ready to seek opportunity somewhere else I can’t make sense of all that. 1 It is on record that Connor Tracey has asked for a release and been turned down. 2 Dykes was playing full-back when he scored his first NRL try for the Sharks (13-8-22) and was #2 f/b behind Kennedy. Miller left because he didn’t want to be #3, then a week or so later Dykes did his ACL (so Tracey became the stand-in for Kennedy). Dykes hasn’t played h/b for the Sharks. 3 Puru: Yes, he is a half-back. 4 Ison: Yes, signed as a Development player 5 Atkinson: “Since his arrival Daniel has fit in seamlessly, is skilled in multiple positions ...” (Craig Fitzgibbon). He is a utility – a Connor Tracey replacement, if you like. So, Puru and Ison are too junior to be considered for the first team, yet. Tracey will go if he can get out, so that leaves Atkinson as the immediate “next h/b” if Hynes or Trindall is out. Sure, Cronulla has plenty of depth, but Ison and Puru shouldn’t need to look elsewhere yet.

How Dearden may be a superstar? Well I'm not a coach but his game seems to be developing in many areas and he seems to have a good football brain. If he continues to develop like that he could be a real star whether he plays at St G or not. I'm certainly hoping he does

You started on this site complaining how you didn’t like what I had to say . Plus why should you have to put up with it . Then you wouldn’t have bothered coming on here , if you’d known it was like some other site that you’d been on. Yet the part you forgot to mention was the fact that you’re the ‘Tro.ll’ who follows others around , complaining about them & their comments . Then saying what their comments mean . ( So a Tro.ll who’s a mind reader .) People on the last site you were on , probably got sick of Robbo & told you where to go. So that’s why you found a new site to patrol, as the site patrol tro.ll of what’s allowable in the world of Robbo. Didn’t know I’d have my very own Tro.ll? Maybe you can tell us more about how Dearden , is going to be the superstar of the future . If only the Dragons buy him. When you’re not on your special patrol duties ?

I dont need to read your mind just your words. Its fine if you want to bore me with constant reference to players coming from the largest nursery in the league. Its been done ad nauseum and that is your key focus on here. Your team has the largest pool of talent to choose from. If they weren't successful there would be something seriously wrong. On this occasion you wanted to remind everyone of Cronulla players in the NSW Cup that have been associated with Penrith pathways, even though you were supposed to be talking about who is good enough for 1st grade. So, that was your actual point. Is that better?

That’s fine , especially as that’s the best you can do. Does everyone know about your special talent , of being a mind reader? Telling others about ‘ what their real thoughts are ‘? You should take that on the road…

It was totally the point & the reason I wrote a comment in the first place. You have your own agenda, when replying. Again, if you don’t like comments that I make . You’re free to ignore them, yet it doesn’t seem like you can? Good luck with that.

Sure looks like it. Except the two I mentioned aren’t cast offs. Cronulla went out of their way to buy them from Penrith. The point was.. They’ll still have a heap of halves / fullbacks. All for one position in the halves , for first grade. Hynes fills the other halves position. Kennedy is the fullback. If they then go out & buy another halves partner for Hynes? There’s zero regular first grade positions available. I can’t help it if you miss the point.

Injuries blunting his pace and confidence has certainly been an issue. No retirement package

Always lacked decent pace . Too many injuries at Cronulla & his defence was found out defending in the front line .

There’s a career that faltered under the weight of expectation. Good luck - Lam and Moylan would be a great combo. And a Top 30 spot freed up for the Sharks who are probably combing through Mike’s Smart Signings for ideas right now.
