The next generation of AFL talent will begin their journey to the big time tonight, with the first night of the 2022 AFL Draft upon us. Join The Roar for a live blog of Day 1 from 7pm (AEDT).
The AFL has decided to once again split the AFL draft across two nights; the first will feature the first round only, while Thursday night will see every other pick lodged. Wednesday night will also see the pre-season and Rookie drafts completed.
The event will be held at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne for the first time since the 2019 AFL draft, with all clubs able to attend once again after the last two drafts were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the top selections are already just about foregone conclusions – Will Ashcroft’s homecoming to Brisbane as a father-son selection is only a matter of whether GWS bid on him with their prized pick one; Aaron Cadman is all but locked in to become a Giant with that very same pick; while George Wardlaw recently let slip in an interview that he is expecting to become a North Melbourne player tonight.
13 of the top prospects have been invited to Marvel Stadium for the event, while the rest will be watching on at home hoping to hear their name called.
There has also been some late drama over pick trading, with Essendon’s pick four receiving plentiful interest across the board.
It’s set to be a memorable night for nearly two dozen of the AFL’s best and brightest up and coming talents, so stay tuned to The Roar for every pick as it happens, with the first pick to be made at 7:10pm (AEDT).
Where: Marvel Stadium (Melbourne)

The first year they were drafted.

So Brayshaw et. al. started playing what year? What position was Freo the year before? No argument, just fact.

Really happy with the 2 kids West Coast got so far
Don Freo
Roar Rookie
Freo was only 1/2 game from second on the back of the kids. Remember the season? That argument doesn't work.
Yattuzzi
Roar Rookie
Yes I know, teams low on the ladder are forced to play their kids earlier. We will have to disagree about Holmes. A player who found his spot in a premiership team.
Don Freo
Roar Rookie
Probably not. Holmes is good but a few cogs short of Clark. Brayshaw, Serong, O’Driscoll, Chapman, Young, Walker, Frederick made their marks soon enough. Only injury hindered Amiss. He will kick over 40 in this, effectively his first year. Is there talking of Richmond or Collingwood winning the draft? What did they do? Ed Allan, yes, but what else?
Yattuzzi
Roar Rookie
Drafted players are years off making a difference. Even old age ones take years to fit into the side. All the talk of Collingwood and Richmond, or whoever winning the draft is maybe something that will help in two years. Clark did good for you first year. Hopefully he will keep improving. Was Holmes a ready replacement? Was he a better performer?
Don Freo
Roar Rookie
If Collingwood develops him, we'd have to restump and rewire his game to get rid of bad habits. We'd take him though. Good to see your mob have finally acknowledged they are lacking a Clark on the list.

So, like his Dad, 98 games rather than the 48 for Kelly? I thought you would be licking your lips as the Magpies developed a player for you. If he reaches Kelly's ability and he keeps on the field and he keeps in Melbourne, Collingwood would have done well. 'Many cogs better', there is a bit of expectation.
Don Freo
Roar Rookie
Ed Allan? Many, many cogs better than Kelly. He'll stay. His dad stayed at Hawthorn long enough to give them value.

Have the Pies recruited the next Tim Kelly, Don?
Birdman
Roar Rookie
Yep. Weddle certainly looks like he could free another defender to swing forward. Has great hands and an aerobic beast so hopefully he proves good value at pick 18. Thrilled with McKenzie- classy user which we desperately need.
Dean
Roar Rookie
Weddle is a very good pick up Birdy. A really versatile player that has played as a mid, forward and defender in junior footy. Explosive and hard at it, could free up Scrimma going forward or Day playing on the wing. Really happy with both picks. McKenzie was the mid l was hoping for, absolute class and the best disposal in this year's top picks.
Don Freo
Roar Rookie
What's this "Donny" stuff? Not because he's better but because he's West Australian. The east doesn't know the west.

Hollands seems to be a good pick by the Blues, suits our needs - good sized elite runner. Hoping the can manage Hustwaite tomorrow

A bit of a bolter, but Jones looms as a readymade replacement for Bobby Hill in the Giants' attacking 50.
