AFL trade period latest news and rumours: Deadline Day

By Josh / Expert

The final day of the AFL trade period has arrived and there’s still oodles of work to be done. Join me here on The Roar for all the latest AFL trade news and rumours on deadline day, starting from 9am AEST.

First a little PSA: You may remember that in the past, the deadline for completion of trades was a sharp 2pm.

Well, things are a little different this year – to make the most of the high drama that is the end of the trade period, the window is open till 8:30pm tonight.

Yes, that means I’ll be here giving you the latest for just shy of 12 consecutive hours… don’t ever say I don’t treat you nice.

So what’s going to happen today? Well, there’s a ton of big names whose futures still remain very much unclear.

There’s a good chance that Lachie Neale to Brisbane will be the first major domino to fall today which could set of a huge chain reaction.

Pick 5 would certainly go from Brisbane to Fremantle as part of that transaction, but if reports are true then that selection might be about to become the town bicycle.

It could then move quickly to Melbourne as part of a deal for Jesse Hogan, on to Gold Coast for Steven May, and then perhaps to Port Adelaide in a deal that sees Chad Wingard to Hawthorn, Ryan Burton to the Power, and Jack Hombsch to the Suns.

In the middle of all that we’re not even sure what happens to Dayne Beams, Tim Kelly, or the many other players whose future still hangs in the balance with less than 12 hours left on the clock for deals to be completed.

Join me here on The Roar for all the latest AFL trade news and rumours on deadline day, starting from 9am AEST.

He'll have learned more of his trade by then, kids will be older, less stress. Family will still be in WA. He'll be a better player

They still made space on their list for players who wanted to leave their original club, big-hearted and all. Tim Kelly leaves for WA at the end of 2019, a year older, stronger and more physically mature. He's played with and learned from top midfielders for another season.Excellent pickup for the Eagles. Thanks,Cats, for nurturing and training and paying our new recruit.

So it's Belly you don't like now? A new target. He has a degree in Commerce and Law, played 300 plus AFL games, was Premiership VC under Wayne Carey, President of the AFL players association, Captain of Freo, 3 times Doig medalist, Board member at Freo, was hand picked to replace Eoin Cameron on ABC Breakfast, the highest rating breakfast announcer over the longest period of time in Australian radio history...and they picked Pete to replace him. I have listened to that programme for over 20 years so, yes, I do know much about him. He's a gem. Still, it's comforting, I'm sure to your many fans on The Roar, that you know more about Freo and footy than he does.

Wanna trade Lobb for Kelly?

...and only kicked 11 goals for the season. At least he is in a strong system with one of the AFL's best coaches.

You haven't been reading, have you? I hoped and argued Freo would get ABOVE full value if they were going to trade or not trade Lachie at all. They turned a first and fifth rounder into a pick in each round and a future 3rd rounder plus Hogan and Lobb. Now that is getting full value. I was resisting the popular eastern states critics' (and silly Jonboy's) idea that a straight 3 way swap of #6 Neale/Hogan/May would be good. Tell me Freo didn't do brilliantly. Tell me that's not the value Freo should have got. without that, it is absolutely certain we would have held him.

I am glad that Gaffy is back with the Eagles. I am proud that winning the Premiership this year may hurt the Eagles in the long run. but I may be wrong. I just hope it has not hurt the Eagles.

What's 'deep'? Try again. read it until you understand it. you could even quote a weasel word if you want to but do it on the next thread. Since The Roar stopped notifying comments on email, comments don't get read when the article is past its use by date. CU on the next one. I'm happy with Freo. You can cry yourself to sleep because it seems you have no comfort from your team. You certainly don't seem to enjoy any.

Good boy. That's a start. Now, read the rest. There were more days between then and now.

I still would prefer to have Lachie and wait on Hogan next year but there is no doubting it is "way better than the impatient pundits were willing to settle for".

We started with only pick 5 and pick 70 something. First and fifth round plus Lachie. We now have a pick in each round and a future 3rd rounder PLUS Jesse Hogan (remember how everyone reckoned we should get him?), Rory Lobb, a good injury reserve (Colyer) and grabbed Reece Conca. Yep...WAY better. You can pretend that was a failure but people will laugh at you.

Can't be too irrelevant if you are bursting to have a conversation with me. You seem to hang on my every word. I get that a lot. Something to do with the substance of what I offer. Thank You.

What's your thoughts on how it all ended up for Freo AD?

Good utility back up. Ruck, key back, key forward. Worth a shot.
