AFL trade period, latest news and rumours: Day 6

By Josh / Expert

The first week of the AFL trade period draws to a close today – things are pretty wild already, and set to get wilder. Join me here on The Roar where we’ll stay up to date with all the latest trade news and rumours, starting from 9am AEDT.

The major news that broke late yesterday is that, as suspected by some, Chad Wingard has nominated Hawthorn as his preferred trade destination.

There appears to be a lot going on behind the scenes here: Port have gone to great lengths to shape the narrative as being Wingard’s decision to seek a move, but there’s significant speculation that he’s been pushed to make the decision.

Who knows what’s really honest, so let’s focus on what does appear to be relatively certain.

What has been reported is Hawthorn’s initial offer to Port Adelaide involves not just their first round pick in the draft this year, currently No.15, but also star youngster Ryan Burton.

Burton was runner-up in the Rising Star Award to Andy McGrath just 12 months ago, but while he played a full season in 2018 it wasn’t as impressive – dropping off in some key areas statistically, and finishing a lowly 18th in Hawthorn’s best and fairest.

Burton is of course a South Australian originally, but despite the fact it would represent a move home to be closer to family, it’s been reported that he is ‘shattered’ by the news that Hawthorn want to trade him out of the club.

What’s more, it’s been said that Port Adelaide have rejected the offer from Hawthorn, and there’s been some word to suggest they’ll seek out not just Burton and pick 15, but Hawthorn’s 2019 first-round pick as well.

Plenty more to play out in this scenario certainly, and across the trade period as a whole.

You can count on Matti having the wrong end of the stick.

Freo has done that most years in Lyon's tenure.

In what way is that Bennell silliness 'apparent'? You base all your knowledge on 'there's a whisper'? The only rumours you ever repeat as truth are the nasty ones. The rest of us notice they are not substantiated in any way and have died out. You don't demonstrate much sharpness but I'll bet you always came up with the weirdest result when playing Chinese Whispers.

Last lifelong Freo supporter capable of being a superstar was Yeo and we all know how that story ended. Carlton will finish above Freo next year Macca.

"We take Hogan next year" from the man who brought such hits as "Freo will make finals" and "Hawthorn will be bottom 4".

I would trust him to have alot more information to base that advice on than you don, most consistent player over last three years wants out, Bennell apparently been told his recent contract wont be fulfilled, hogan coming/not coming, coach not on solid ground, unqualified ppl over seeing trade and draft..... doesn't really give the impression of a club any manager would advise their client to go to. Heay have changed his mind if there was a fwd to kick to but he'll end up at wce to.

Always funny to see comments from people who know nothing about a club and its players, yet try to tell them how they should be feeling. Larry, you are a victim of the loudest gossip columns. Find out a bit and you might see something. You might think you know more about footy than Peter Bell but, guess what?....

What blinkers. They are asking for more than Freo cares to give. No deal. Freo folk aren't sad. All the grizzles are from non-Freo folk.

Certainly not better than Neale. Good enough for the first and second round picks they offered.

Techy? What's that?

Do you realise that the only Freo player Van Der Wielen has had since Paul Hasleby has been Hayden Schloithe? The one who beat Kelly to the Sandover. Hardly a list of players who know Freo under Lyon and Rosich. At least these lightweights have sucked you in.

We take Hogan next year. You know that bit. He has no interest in a crowded forward line at WC. Your comnents are in the anywhere but Freo basket. Thick.

Most people should be suspicious of the Hawks how they keep getting picks and deals is a mystery

Make Dogs Great Again

Now that Wingard has come out clean and chosen the hawks as his preferred destination and good luck to him on his decision, Sam Power and his team must make a bald statement to the rest of the competition. One that I’m sure will earn them respect and make them a destination club if we are ever to become one. Throw everything at Josh Kelly right now, not wait till next years trade period, make it happen immediately. Offer up our pick 7 and next years future first round pick with the dollars to match. It will be the greatest heist ever if Dogs could pull this off. Imagine a midfield with the likes of Bontempelli, Hunter, McRae, Kelly & Co with the new ruling of 6-6-6. Then and only then will other clubs and players take us seriously instead of toying around like they have been over the years. Make it happen Sam!!!

Look at the age of the players we bring in, the age of our team, the length of our injury list this year and what we have given up in these good deals and you should see it

Everyone was wondering why Kelly manager said what he did, now Macca I have to be careful being a big bad eagle supporter but I think ppl will see he isn't far wrong after today

Sounds like a great strategy Don, don't take the player you know wants to come and will make a difference next year, let stay at his club for a year, then go to your cross town rival and then wait a couple of years for other players on their list to get squeezed out, then compete with every other team in the league for their signatures. Who know you may just get a key forward before Fyfe turns 30.
