Brisbane have boosted their hopes of a top-two season finish by thumping Gold Coast by 91 points in their AFL derby at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Final score
Brisbane 22.11 (144)
Gold Coast 8.5 (53)
Saturday’s twilight game takes us to the Gabba, where the finals-bound Brisbane Lions host wooden spooners-elect the Gold Coast Suns. Join The Roar for live commentary and scores from 4:35pm AEST.
If you were to compare the seasons of the competition’s two Queensland teams, you’d get very different results. Brisbane has shot from a finals hopeful to a legitimate premiership contender, while the Gold Coast Suns have fallen to the bottom after reasonably encouraging start to the season.
The difference between the duo is even more stark headed into this round: Brisbane’s won their past seven, the Suns have dropped their past fifteen.
Last weekend’s clashes were further illustrative of the teams positionings. Brisbane held off an admirable Bulldogs effort to secure their fourteenth win of the year, Gold Coast being thrashed by the Pies down in Victoria by around 70 points.
This week you’d be really looking at the Suns to provide some effort heading into the clash they’re absolute underdogs in – all Brisbane have to do is not tune out and drop a game that is almost a certainty. Brisbane will also be hoping for a bit of a percentage boost, too, you’d think.
Teams wise, it’s only the Suns who have made selection changes headed into this afternoon’s clash. They’ve omitted two key players – Peter Wright and Jack Martin – while including Jacob Heron and debutant Caleb Graham.
Brisbane’s made no changes, including skipper Dayne Zorko after his hamstring scare last weekend.
Prediction
This will, in all likelihood, be a shellacking. Brisbane’s just far too strong for the fatigued Suns, and with a top two spot – or perhaps even the minor premiership – within grasp, the Lions won’t be taking any chances with this one. They’ll win by eight goals, plus.

Do you think that's the purpose of the draw? Is it Brisbane's fault the Suns aren't at their best at the moment?

Brisbane finished something like 16th last year so there's no favouritism here.

Fair to say getting to play Suns twice helps Brisbane finish top 2. Fixture is a joke.

Good question, AD. I'd be a 2 club member but Hawks will always be no. 1. Why Hawthorn? 2 words. Peter Hudson. Still the greatest FF of his era. Total freak

Q4 ‘4 BEHIND BRISBANE Witherden has a shot, but it doesn't have the accuracy and that'll be ruled a behind. About four minutes remaining now. Brisbane: 22.11 (144) Gold Coast: 8.5 (53)

Does it say much that the Suns have kicked as many in goals in the last 22 minutes than they did in the past 3 quarters?

Q4 ‘7 GOAL GOLD COAST Sam Day adds another late goal for the Suns, as they push the margin back to 90 points. Not at all good, but not the dreaded 100 point margin, eh? Brisbane: 22.11 (143) Gold Coast: 8.5 (53)

Q4 '9 GOAL GOLD COAST Hah. The Suns are putting in effort to prevent the Suns' getting the 100 point margin. Because, with this latest Ainsworth major, the margin returns to 95 points. Brisbane: 22.10 (142) Gold Coast: 7.5 (47)
