The Essendon Bombers will be wanting to bounce back after a hefty loss when they host the GWS Giants at Metricon Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm (AEST).

Last week’s Friday night outing did not go as planned for the Bombers. Billed as a massive clash, the Dons kicked just three goals as they lost to the Brisbane Lions by 63 points.

It was a shattering defeat for the club, who have now lost two of their past three games – their last win coming over last-placed Adelaide a fortnight ago. In ninth position, they remain just outside of the top eight, with serious questions surrounding them regarding consistency and finals potential.

The Giants have regained some of their mojo, victorious in their last two clashes after an indifferent beginning to the year. Those games – a 12-point win over Richmond and a 26-point victory over the Suns – have secured GWS (for now) within the top eight. The club has an opportunity with this match – and next week’s unusual derby against the Swans in Western Australia – to solidify their spot in the eight.

The Giants have played two games at Metricon Stadium this year, splitting the results. Essendon have ventured to the ground on three occasions, winning just once.

The Bombers have made four selection changes tonight. Matt Guelfi and Irishman Connor McKenna are their two most noticeable inclusions. Leon Cameron’s side lose Matt De Boer, Toby Greene and Sam Jacobs, but gain Callan Ward and Shane Mumford.

Cats and Hawks have filled their boots with flags so almost no surprise there. Bombers? Almost 6000 days since they've won a final so why the lack of love from the umps? Supplements saga?

But the other thing as well is umpires are cognitively biased towards teams that get hammered week in and week out.

Statistically speaking free kicks for and against don’t have a correlation on ladder position. It’s just infuriating.

What I notice from this is that it seems to have no bearing on the actual ladder, North, Collingwood and Adelaide up the top. Nice post, interesting

Mate, if a team gets one free in half a game it's inevitable that the other side are going to get a few soft ones, and when the other side knows they aren't being penalised the other is literally playing with one hand tied.

What do Callan Ward & Nathan Buckley have in common? Both could have been premiership captains.

That is extremely disappointing but it doesn't diminish the fact that he staged last night and most likely conned the umpire into giving him a free kick. No-one can say that the Giants would not have still won but it effectively robbed the Bombers of any chance.

Very interesting Realist. Hawks last but you will still see comments on here saying #freekickhawthorn, laughable and ludicrous.

It's been reported that Callan Ward has received death threats. Some footy fans are pathetic.

Yeah, but that’s got nothing to do with the bombers, I’m sure it was a bad decision,I’m also sure the fact that it was blown had nothing to do with what color jumper the bloke was wearing Maybe the umpiring has been a bit inconsistent this year, but I’m just over people blaming the umpires for their team losing Kick more goals mate, then your team will win. I’ve got no issues with people saying the calls made were bad, just that they’re being conspired against. it’s a bloody tough gig being an umpire.

Yeah I agree mate you’ve gotta look at where the free kicks are paid however it’s much harder to account for other variables in that count. I think sports statisticians should look at creating an efficiency gap measure like we have with gerrymandering.

I dunno about you but club umpires try to get away with day light murder in my neck of the woods haha. I know there was one time we lucked into getting a former vfl ump so that was hood

Haha I thought of this the wrong way but the bombers do have the lowest free kicks for total.

Still 3rd Last on Average Chucka. From memory, positions don’t change when you rank by average instead.

Yeah the bombers are third last with a game in hand. I’m sure when you average it out they move to last.

Dude, they didn’t call when towner got smashed in the face and it’s outrageous. The umpires missed a whole bunch of stuff and it was an incredibly poor performance, while I agree that it was not a determinative factor it was disheartening in my mind as a bombers supporter where it appears that the AFL is completely ignorant of their desire to protect players.

Yay North's on top of a ladder. That's 2. The lads are also on top of the injury ladder. Double yay. It's the frees in the forward 50 that really count. I'm making of it that they like contesting the ball. They are also having a shocker of a year and are under a heap of pressure and being tackled around the scone a lot.
