The Geelong Cats will look to extend their run at the top of the AFL ladder as the season reaches the mid point when they host the struggling Sydney Swans. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4:35pm (AEST).

A strong Cats team generally find a way to turn their home ground at GMHBA Stadium in a fortress, and they are well on the way to doing that this season.

They have won three out of four there, but interestingly, the Swans have won on their last three trips to Geelong, so there may be more to this match than meets the eye.

On the surface, the Cats should run away with this game, almost without breaking a sweat. They sit top of the table with nine wins on the board, and have won six on the hop.

The quality of opposition in the past few weeks, with wins over the Gold Coast, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs probably doesn’t give an accurate reflection of exactly where they are, but they are in fine form.

They will be missing Gary Abblett for this game after he was suspended, but ease that loss with the return of Patrick Dangerfield.

The Swans, on the other hand, make the trek to Geelong in 15th place on the ladder and with finals footy starting to slip away from them at a rapid pace.

They have won three of ten to start the season, and speculation about the direction the club will take in the footy department is rife, so they could do with a big performance against the league leaders to shut some doubters up here.

Sydney haven’t been all that far away in the last couple of weeks either, with a tight loss to Collingwood last week, and wins over North Melbourne and Essendon before that.

While all three games have been scrappy, and their kicking accuracy not unbelievably good, they may just be starting to turn a corner, with Jarrad McVeigh and Daniel Menzel back for this game.

If they can hit their forward line – led by Buddy Franklin – consistently, then they stand a chance here, but that same forward line has struggled against Geelong previously, so it all might be a bit dreamlike to imagine it coming off.

Prediction
The Swans might have had some recent success at GMHBA, but it won’t be the case this time. The class gap is simply too much on paper, and Geelong should run away with a heavy win, although a reasonable breeze and slight chance of rain might reduce the gap.

Cats by 31.

You had a good run. Your club has been the epitome of hard, tough contested football for 20 years. At least your not Carlton, because they really are putrid. Sydney know better than to play a team without hard bodied mids, and playing young guys on the outside against a star studded Geelong will no doubt give your young guys a bucket load of experience. You had Geelongs kryptonite not playing too (JK, McVeigh, Grundy) so dont be too harsh Look at the positives because there is no one who plays good against the Cats in Geelong

I love the Cats this year. Just top shelf performances week in & week out. It's important that we go on and win the flag this year. Danger needs one, Stewart needs one and Selwood needs one as Captain. I don't see the Cats losing again this season. Go Cats

A pity that 2Q ascendency was wasted by Sydney. A good effort but really, not sure there was going to be any different result no matter what. Of these two long time forces, Geelong are obviously the superior footy team this year.

If you could transfer Shorten to us I’m sure it would fix everything. Only if you feel comfortable though.

Just loving how the cats keep proving everyone wrong. The Blitz made Franklin look like he's washed up. Sam Reid was not qualified for the task either. Love Gary Rowan and Dalhouse future legends of the club. I know Chris Scott has been very successful but this looks like it's finally coming together exactly how he planned. Scarlett and Enright his new right hand men have brought this team such belief now that it's looking like 2008 Geelong all over again. Can't see us losing to anyone this year now. No chance. Go Cats

This has been a pathetic effort by Sydney. Longmire needs to go. He has lost the players. This club has become rudderless and directionless. The board is also to blame. They have made mistake after mistake in terms of their drafting, recruiting, and trading. Bloods fans were promised a premiership dynasty but instead they serve up putrid efforts like this.

The swans are always a hurdle for the Cats. Gazza is worth 4 goals.

Swans are going nowhere this year, next year, the one after and most likely longer. Going to need between 5 to 10 years before they challenge for the flag again

Swans have to change the way they play. Entry into forward 50 is poor, constant turnovers. And as they say, bad kicking = bad football

I don’t mind it. I’ve never believed in 4 quarter footy. Defensively they’ll hold in the finals.

FULLTIME The Geelong Cats didn't have it all their own way, but have come away with a 22-point victory over a sloppy and costly Sydney Swans outfit at GMHBA Stadium. The Swans were their own worst enemy throughout the contest, having 23 scoring shots, but only turning eight of them into goals. It meant they had three more scoring shots than the Cats, but still lost by nearly four goals. While the Swans were sloppy on one foot, the Cats, who now go to the top of the table by two outright victories, were accurate and ran away with the game in two five-minute periods. First, in the first quarter. After finding themselves down 15 blot, they came back to take a ten-point lead into the first change, then, on either side of halftime, Geelong went on a five-goal run. They still have issues to address, but now find themselves on top of the ladder by two games outright, and are looking very solid heading through the middle part of the season. The Swans, meanwhile, came into the round 15th and are really going to need something of a miracle to play finals footy now as they slump to a three and eight record. Cats 13.7 (85) Swans 8.15 (63)

Q4 0' - GOAL CATS, PATRICK DANGERFIELD The Cats have scored! Dahlhaus with a kick in from the boundary, and it's somehow fallen into the path of Dangerfield who kicks it through just before the siren rings out around GMHBA Stadium. Cats 13.7 (85) Swans 8.15 (63)

Yep, Good as they are during those periods, it's a bit of a concern. Don't want to be playing like that at the end of the season when the whips are cracking.
