Round 14 begins with a Friday night blockbuster as the third-placed Geelong Cats host the second-placed Western Bulldogs at their GMHBA Stadium fortress. Tune into the action right here on The Roar with live scores from 7:50pm (AEST).

The Cats are flying at the moment. Five consecutive wins – as well as seven of their last eight – has seen the perennial contenders rocket into third on the AFL ladder. They can draw level on premiership points with the Bulldogs should they win here, though they’d need a monster thrashing to leapfrog them on percentage.

However, victory over another contender will regardless establish the Cats as one of, if not the, flag favourites, having last week travelled to the Adelaide Oval and defeated a strong Port Adelaide outfit by 21 points. Ahead of a trip to Brisbane next week to tackle the red-hot Lions, Chris Scott’s team are in the middle of a three-week stretch that could either see them reach the finals in the top two once again, or even fall out of the four and set up a fiendishly difficult September.

Cameron Guthrie’s return from a shoulder concern means the Cats are almost at full strength for this clash of the titans. Veteran Shaun Higgins has been officially rested, but such is the strength of the Cats’ line-up that he could easily have been dropped instead.

The Bulldogs have only lost twice in 2021, yet both have come under the Friday night lights against fellow heavyweights. First, they were outmuscled by reigning premiers Richmond in Round 7 despite a half-time lead, before being soundly beaten by ladder-leaders Melbourne in Round 11, a 28-point margin flattering them if anything.

The Dogs bost arguably the best midfield in the competition, even with stars Adam Treloar and Josh Dunkley both out injured. But while their forward line has clicked this year, with Josh Bruce and Aaron Naughton both in the top six for the Coleman Medal, their backline, particularly against opposition key forwards, has looked troublesome at times. First-year Fremantle forward Josh Treacy booted three goals in their most recent match, and though the Dogs returned from their trip to Perth with a 28-point win, that’s not a great sign ahead of a date with red-hot Cats twin towers Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron.

This match was originally to be played behind closed doors owing to Victoria’s ongoing COVID-19 situation; however, 7000 fans from the Geelong area will be permitted to attend the game. Given anyone from Melbourne is on the banned list, the Dogs will be lucky for any of them to be wearing the red, white and blue.

I'd say looking at the game neutrally; the dogs are great and will be better with their missing players of course, a game against them come finals time will again be a 50/50 flip of the coin. But that was far from the Cats at their best as we were also missing Duncan, Henderson & Miers, 2 of our stars and a regular forward. Hendo's injusry pre-game made us lose structure as O'Connor had to be moved down back from the middle, meaning the Bont and Liba got a free-ride when they would have otherwise been tagged. Danger & Guthrie are also underdone coming back from serious injuries, they'll be a lot better come September. And finally the slippery conditions which prevented us from playing our natural kick mark game. Anyone who actually watches the cats would tell you that was not their natural or A-game, and instead an arm-wrestled territory game due to the conditions. I think winning 7 out of 8 games against the top 8 sides speaks volumes for how well a team is going, which is ironically, the opposite of the tigers atm...

Agreed Cat, I was at the famous Melbourne game a few years back, the one Touhy won after the siren and if anything you could have described that game as "life used" -given that we were 35 down in the last quarter and they missed 2-3 more chances to seal it as we made the unthinkable comeback. This game was just a classic 50-50 game which could have gone either way, and in the end a bit of desperation and class got us over the line. Deservedly so if you ask me, we had a 7 minute patch at the start of the third in which we could have blown the game open, but poor set shots and decision making cost us as they went up the other end and scored twice instead.

True, but he also got the ball moving forward for our last two goals, so in the big moments he still managed to stand up. He's rusty as hell atm which is understandable given his missed 11 weeks so far this year, he'll get better and better as we roll along towards final. And hopefully he can turn the set shot woes around again like he did late last year, because 0.3 from those spots is poor.

I think Tiger supporters are pretty comfortable in their own skin- so to speak. No need for us to denigrate successful teams, oh wait Cats aren’t that successful. But in short if you want a Tiger comment – Cats are still looking like the September proverbial speed bump and a dead cat bounce got them over the line in this game. Doggy fans should be very happy. They now know they can beat them at the G with a fully fit team come finals. I don’t think Cats can put anyone else in that team that could further boost them – you should be worried.

Yea Nics losing Nort early didn’t help & Martin prior to game threw out our Structure! I was impressed with our fight for the contest that alone was worth more than the 4 points we lost! When Dunks, Treloar ,Wood , Martin & Nort are back we will be a formidable team!
