Match result:

The Essendon Bombers have defeated the Gold Coast Suns by 10 points at Metricon Stadium.

Stuart Dew’s side were brave, but they could not hold on at the end. Touk Miller collected 32 disposals for the game, but it was Ben King who was the shining light for the Suns. The youngster finished with four majors next to his name.

As for John Worsfold’s side, they did not play that well, but they found a way to collect the points. Dylan Shiel accumulated 28 disposals, but it was Jake Stringer and Shaun McKernan who were the stars of the show, as they kicked four majors each.

Final score
Gold Coast Suns 15.6.96
Essendon Bombers 16.10.106

It really is difficult to get excited about a clash that features the Gold Coast. They have had a horrific 2019 campaign, which has only included three wins from 17 games.

Stuart Dew is doing his best with what he has available to him, but the reality is, what he currently possesses in terms of personnel, is just simply not good enough.

I do fear for the future of this club, as what they have dished out in recent times is not sustainable.

The Suns did give the Carlton Blues a game last week at Marvel Stadium, but they were defeated by 24 points come the final siren.

There were a couple of shining lights. Brayden Fiorini, who has had a solid season, accumulated 32 disposals. Alex Sexton was also lively in front of goal, as he booted three majors.

In team news this week for the Gold Coast, Will Brodie (injured) and Charlie Ballard (omitted) make way. Anthony Miles and Lachie Weller are the inclusions.

As for the Bombers, they have hit form at the perfect time. They should get a top-eight finish, as they are playing a solid brand of football right now, but they need to maintain that level of performance.

John Worsfold’s side have accumulated 10 wins from 17 games, and that tally could have been more had they started the season in better form.

The victory against the Adelaide Crows last week was Essendon’s best for the season. They were behind and undermanned for large portions of the game, but they still prevailed by 21 points at the Adelaide Oval.

Zach Merrett was huge in terms of the Bombers winning the game. The midfielder found the ball 31 times, and he also booted two majors.

Mitch Brown had a sharp game in front of goal, as he kicked four majors for the match.

In team news this week for the Bombers, Dyson Heppell (injured), Conor McKenna (unavailable) and Michael Hartley (omitted) all make way. Zac Clarke, Jayden Laverde and Ben McNiece are the inclusions.

Prediction
The Bombers are flying at the moment, and I think it would be fair to say that the Suns are not. Also, the fact Essendon have something to play for helps in terms of motivation.

Essendon by 40 points.

Yes it was but l just thought the Bombers still had enough fire power in the team to not be troubled by the Suns. Maybe l have a higher opinion of the list and just expected a comfortable win by them. McKenna was out but that was a choice. The AFL was just lucky they won in the end due to the missed goal. Nice to have a reasonable response to my posts rather being told to shut the hell up and being told l am full of it because l have an opinion. I thought the Suns played really well and not much credit was giving to them. Clarke was a strange pick up but in the end probably the right call due to rucks going down this year. Worked out as McKernan would have had to play in the ruck yesterday rather than demolishing the Suns forward line.

Did you see the umpiring it was farcical at times in GCs advantage, dean on top of the ridiculous dissallowed goal. Good win for bombers . Really decimated right now with injury . I always thought this would be a tough one with three more keys players (heppel, mckenna, fantasia) out on top of the four keys already missing (daniher, hurley , belllchambers, smith) . thats seven instant first team starting players of enormous importance with the ruck zac clarke virtually playing for GC for three quarters he was terrible giving goals away from centre.

No Brian they do not have half there side out, thats an over exaggeration. Probably closer to 6 of their best 22. Umpiring was poor and lucky for the AFL that the Bombers won. Still should of won by more, sorry if my opinion differs from yours but l didn't watch the game through rose coloured glasses.

No my opinion isn't, stating that the tigers had a few injuries and still smashed the Suns was. I still think regardless of the players missing they shouldn't have let the Suns get that close.

A win is a win. Been a tough few weeks and key players out, you take the W. 4 points banked, thanks very much. So, yeah, it's alright, thanks for asking :)

Haha, can't even have a proper convo about football without it turning into an argument. Just pointing out facts and would say the same regardless who was playing and would say even more if it was Hawthorn. Wish people could stick to the topic at hand. Nothing sour seen more success than most. Had our time.

We finished it all right. Suns were staunch and brave opposition who really worked hard. Sorry I couldn’t say the same about the boys in purple (Fyfe excepted the man’s a jet) ????

Didn't need to be great. Just needed to win. But the opinion of a sour Hawks supporter means nothing.

Tigers had plenty of players out to and won by nearly 100 points.

I am with you AD, just getting over the line against the Suns doesn't strike me as a great win. Lol

Still don't think it should of been that close, Suns had a red hot crack which was good to see from a neutral perspective. Still not sure where the Bombers are , l don't see them as a genuine threat but you never know.

I take a lot out of it. Missing a third of their best 22, interstate (not great opposition but they were clearly up for it). This is a game Essendon normally lose, especially when expected to win. On the back of an exhausting month constantly coming from behind in close games. Good win for mine.
