Sunday afternoon football takes us to the home of footy, as Hawthorn host a high flying GWS Giants outfit at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm (AEST).

This clash sees the GWS Giants, who are sitting at third – fresh off a relatively comfortable win against St Kilda – take on a middling Hawthorn outfit, who are themselves coming off a demoralising loss against Melbourne.

Plenty of stories surrounding this clash, then. And plenty of opportunity for both sides to garner what will be an integral win.

Hawthorn would desperately want to defeat a string GWS side in order to strengthen their increasingly faint finals hopes, while GWS – who have won five of their last six – would want to garner the four points to ensure they are continually in top four contention.

Hawthorn, too, have another dramatic side story – there has been plenty of conjecture surrounding Jordan Roughead and his demotion to the VFL, and the Hawks would want to show they can win without the champion.

In addition to Roughead, the Hawks have made a trio of other selection changes. They’ve also omitted Daniel Howe and Kieran Brand, while Chad Wingard is out with injury. James Frawley, Jonathon Ceglar, Jack Scrimshaw and James Cousins all return to the side.

GWS, too, have made four changes after last week’s win. Aidan Corr and Shane Mumford are injured, whilst young pair Isaac Cummings and Jackson Hately have been omitted.

Several vital players return, not least of which are Phil Davis and Josh Kelly. Dawson Simpson and Zac Langdon are also included in Sunday’s outfit.

Prediction
The Giants are the sensible pick in this one, and they are who I will be backing. I entirely expect that Hawthorn will refuse to be blown away easily, and perhaps snatch the lead during some points of the clash, but it’s the Giants who are performing a whole lot better across the board, and they’ll win.

GWS by 16 points.

Swans get 26,000 and it’s a crisis but the Hawks get 14,00 and everything is rosy.

Yeah Giants in Sydney. Blues showed plenty against the Hawks too and then got flogged the next week by North who the media put under the pump. I am sure there will be a lot of media focus on the Giants this week. An interesting point, every team that has played the Blues this season has lost the next week. Might have to put a bet on the Saints this week.

Hawthorn had to make a statement today, I don't know why GWS were so highly-fancied.

Does anyone have some footage of Finlaysons goal / point in the second quarter? Went to review, got dismissed fairly quickly. Goal or point?

Thanks AD. More fine work today. Probably not a classic for the neutral but watching the Giants chase tail most of the second half was enjoyable for Hawks fans :)

Hawthorn has comfortably defeated the more highly-favoured GWS outfit in a great performance, holding the high scoring New South Welshmen to just five goals, including just one in the second half. The Hawks will be super, super pleased with much of their effort this afternoon, particularly given their strong play through much of the ground and the fact that they never let the Giants come back into the clash despite some inaccuracy. The Giants never looked comfortable throughout that game, struggling to implement their generally fast, high-scoring game plan and unable to move smoothly throughout the MCG, a ground at which they've now suffered sixteen losses for just two wins. Hawks will go into next week's clash against Richmond in the same time slot with renewed confidence, whilst the Giants face Carlton in a Sunday twilight clash will be no doubt be very intriguing. Hawthorn: 10.11 (71) GWS: 5.8 (38)

Yeah l tipped the Hawks today and no l do not automatically tip them. Just thought the young guys coming in would have a real crack which they did. Impressive effort from the first bounce.

Expected we were a real chance this afternoon but this surpassed by expectations by a fair bit. Too many ready to write off the Hawks.

GOAL HAWTHRON Oh, what a beauty of a goal! Sicily skilfully avoided a defender, before going bang from about 40ish metres out. Superb kick. Hawthorn: 10.11 (71) GWS: 4.7 (31)
