Two Victorian clubs head to their second home in Tasmania when the Hawthorn Hawks take on the North Melbourne Kangaroos in Launceston. Keep updated with all the action right here at The Roar with live scores from 2:10pm (AEST).

The Kangaroos are still winless for 2021, but this might be their best chance yet at breaking the drought. David Noble’s men have been slowly but steadily improving over the course of the year, last week’s 18-point loss to Collingwood their first under 30 points all season.

History suggests they are unlikely to go through a season without a victory, and the 17th-placed Hawks aren’t going well enough to feel safe heading into this game.

For the Hawks, it’s a case of how far the mighty have fallen. The halcyon days of their 2013-15 premiership threepeat are long gone, with president Jeff Kennett officially announcing their rebuild earlier in the week. Only the Roos have mustered fewer points this season, while North and Essendon are the only sides to have conceded more.

Launceston was a fortress for the Hawks during their glory days, and they did secure a 3-point victory over Adelaide in their only match in the Apple Isle thus far in 2021. Could the trip across Bass Strait be just the tonic for Alastair Clarkson to work his magic?

Yeah l was, had all the confidence that North would fight back and win. Hawks have had a quarter in nearly every game where the opposition kicked bags of goals in a single quarter. It was just a matter of when.

I would imagine you were already deciding what you were going to spend your money on at quarter time when your guaranteed team were 32 points down?

Chuck, have a read of my response to Angela's post. BTW, have you ever seen that 2011 movie Moneyball. As a sports fan I found it very interesting. A Baseball GM knew he couldn't compete against the Yankees with all their $$ & he was sick of having to go back & recruit untried kids. So he took another direction & had a great success. Speaking of success, nice to be getting a close win today rather than a close loss.

Everyone talks about going back to the draft as if it was that simple. But no one has a crystal ball & rarely does a club it right when they get the picks. There is a long list of number 1 draft picks that have not amounted to much & a huge list of top 10 draft picks that have amounted to absolutely nothing. So going back to the draft is never a certainty for success. They tell me the greatest era of club success was the Demons between 1955-64. They were a powerhouse. But they haven't won a premiership since. How many times have the Saints, Demons or Bulldogs gone back to the draft in the last 50 years? On countless occasions. And how many premierships have they won between them during that time? 1, yes that is right, just 1. When I was growing up, I was always told about the big three most successful clubs. The Pies, Bombers & Blues. Add up their premiership totals over the last 20 years & it = 1. When is the last time that Essendon or Carlton where in the premiership window? Winning is incredibly hard, there is only 2 tragic errors that the Hawthorn club has made over the last 10 years. Letting Kennedy go & recruiting Jonathan O'Rourke in 2015 for our first 2 picks. BTW, he was also a top 10 draft pick made by GWS at no. 2 who came to nothing. Yes, Ty Vickery was an error but the club needed to replace David Hale, he was recruited under free agency so the club didn’t give up a draft pick & they only signed him for 2 years. BTW, he was also a 1st round draft pick who didn’t come to much. In 2008, Richmond drafted him at no. 8.

I think it's been a gradual decline since Fagan left because from all reports he used to be the one to counter clarko and now that counter balance isn't there.

Actually this year is shaping up as a good year to trade pick one. There are a lot of players coming out of contract and a lot of people have tipped Daicos to go at pick one as well

Yep. I think you’re right. Except that a coach doesn’t make those decisions alone. In fact recruitment managers often only consult with the coach then make decisions. Clarkson seems to have a bigger role than most, Goes to show good good football strategists aren’t necessarily good club strategists. Sydney give a lot of power to long term recruitment guru Kinnear Beatson. And now the Swans have a host of young guns nearing maturity and some exciting talent behind them. Rather be in Longmire’s shoes than Clarkson’s now, even though Hawthorn have won the history war.

Haha fair enough. I think Clarko over rated his own footballing intellect as well and it may actually be good to get some new blood in the top job

I think the decision of not going to the draft up until last year has been the killer. Clarko ever so smugly said a few years ago that draft time was the premiership for some teams. Ridiculous statement given he built the core of those 4 flags through the draft, trading stalwarts with currency to get some top end young talent. This is the way he should have gone after the 2016 season instead of trading in players like Mitchell and OMeara who were never going to get us a flag. Overestimation of the list i would say. I could go on about this for hours.

Hawks capitalized because Richmond and the Bulldogs screwed up. THE VERY NEXT PICK IS KEY. (not a few picks later missing someone several other teams did too but the very next pick) Yet the recruiters at Hawthorn were rated as geniuses ???? 2004 (1-7) – Deledio, Roughead, Griffen, Tambling, Franklin, Williams, Lewis. 2005 – X.Ellis at 3 (4 J.Kennedy) B.Dowler at 6 (7 P.Ryder) 2006 – M.Thorpe at 6 (J.Selwood at 7) Melbourne: 2008 - Watts at 1 (2 NicNat) Blease at 17 (18 Shuey) 2009 - Scully at 1 + Trengove at 2 (Dusty at 3)

Depends on the draft. If there’s a standout gun they might get two within top ten

Why is everyone calling for Clarkson's head? Did he recruit the players? No game plan would hold up with personal that are always second to the ball, and when they do get it; fumbles and turnovers... Still think Clarko could work wonders with the right 'soldiers'....

Can somebody help me, please? If Hawks take home the spoon and get pick 1... and they were to trade it for multiple first round picks, what could they get?
