WATCH: Every involvement Valentine Holmes had on NFL debut for the New York Jets

By The Roar / Editor

Former Cronulla Sharks star Valentine Holmes has made his first appearance for the New York Jets in a preseason clash with the New York Giants.

The 24-year-old made a good impression on limited snaps, entering the game at the start of the fourth quarter where he was used both as a running back as well as a wide reciever.

While he would only rush for six yards from just three carries, Holmes found more success catching, with 30 yards on three receptions.

The Giants went on to win the match 31-22.

Holmes will be hoping he can show enough to be promoted from the practice squad and given a place on the Jets’ final 53-man playing squad ahead of the NFL season which begins in September.

After Val Holmes got put on his back, it looks like he jumped up and was about to play the ball :). That would have been funny. There wasn't much different in that tackle compared to what he has taken in the NRL. Good on him for getting a few runs on the board. Have to wish him all the best. He is always welcome back for Qld if he chooses to come home.

Good on him for trying. Don't think he will make it and I think everyone is realistic about his chances. Haynes undoing was his multiple easy fumbles.

It's just week 2 of the preseason with mostly 3rd and 4th string players featuring in each game. All the best players are being rested. In the corresponding period JH38 (Jarryd Hayne) was absolutely CRUSHING it! By the time the regular season started and JH38 got his shot the elite players brought enough heat to create cracks in the Hayne Plane, grounding him permanently. I still stand by my earlier prediction that Holmes won't make it in the NFL. By this stage Hayne was looking far more impressive and Holmes hasn't even had to field a punt return by the looks of it which would be his main contribution to the squad as a second string punt/kick returner and as a member of special teams IF Holmes was to make the final cut. The best he could hope for outside of that is as the 4th or 5th pick RB or 5th slot WR.

Just saw these highlights and looked at the box score, but it appears Holmes went okay and didn't do too much wrong. Didn't drop any passes, beat a couple of defenders and ran his routes. Well done Holmes. However, not as exciting as Christian Wade, the ex- rugby player from the UK in his first game - 1 carry 65 yards for a touch down.
