Australia will head to Perth with revenge on the mind for the first ever Test at Optus Stadium as India look to build their advantage. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of Day 1 from 1:20pm (AEDT).

It’s been said in the lead-up to the second Test of the series that this Optus Stadium deck is going to resemble WACA pitches of old, and the images surfacing yesterday would suggest it’s going to be tough to bat on.

A pitch so green it was hard to differentiate it from the rest of the ground greeted players and the media yesterday, so it’s expected this will be a result pitch.

While the first Test in Adelaide also played out to a result and was tough to bat on, this will be a completely different type of Test match after India won the first by 31 runs.

The Australians were outplayed for the most part in Adelaide, despite the final margin only being 31 runs. They were a lot further behind, but runs from the tail end of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon ensured they kept things interesting throughout the final day of the match.

The Adelaide Test was a low-scoring, slow-moving grind to say the least. This, on a green top, may also be low-scoring, but it won’t be slow moving. The quicks are going to have a field day, but then, with the ball coming onto the bat, runs can be scored should players manage to get in.

Making a start, as used to be the case on a bouncy WACA track, will be the toughest part of the match for batsmen though, and Australia’s technique may well be found out.

What we do know is that the Indian bowling attack won’t be all that far behind the Aussies. With the pace of Japsrit Bumrah leading the way, their quicks are among the best India have ever sent to Australia, so the pressure will be on the hosts top order.

On the other side of the coin, it’s time for someone other than Cheteswhar Pujara to stand up. He may struggle with the increased bounce on this deck, so it’s probably on Virat Kohli to lead the way.

India will be without both Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin for this match though, which may well improve team balance. They are likely to play a four-pronged pace attack with Bhuvneshwar Kumar coming in, while Hanuma Vihari will bat at six and bowl some part time spin.

Australia, on the other hand, should be unchanged unless they opt to go with a fifth bowler and bring Mitchell Marsh in.

You can lose the test in one day, but difficult to win it in a day...still anyone’s game

Not a bad effort all up. Handscomb is under pressure, though. Second match in a row where he’s nicked off trying to cut something too close to him. Cheers again Scott.

You picked it a while ago Ronan that Head would do well in the test team and he is doing a fine job.

Could well have been 320/4 if Khawaja, Hadscomb did not throw their wickets with absolutely reckless shots. Khawaja looked out of depth initially in the crease against bumrah. Is he taking his place in team for granted in absence of Smith & Warner? Both Finch & S Marsh was looking like they were going to get out at any ball. I was hoping good things from harris & head.Very good to see young players standing up. If Aussie can add another 80,they will be well on top. But it could have been walk on park for Australia if Khawaja,Handscomb could do their job. 400+ & india would have already been out of game completely.

Overall i'm quite happy with the day. Just a shame no one could kick on and make a hundred. Australia batted a lot better today then iv'e seen for some time. Hopefully we can press on tomorrow and get to 350 or more.

Well, that was a dramatic day of Test cricket in Perth, the first at the new Optus Stadium. Australia started strongly during the first session, but India didn't bowl well at Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris who got the Aussies off to a good start, unscathed at lunch. The second session saw India bowl a lot better, picking up some wickets and limiting the score for Australia. The pitch started playing tricks though and what we saw as a par score before the day's play certainly wasn't the number being talked about by the time stumps rolled around. Travis Head and Shaun Marsh steadied the ship throughout the third session for Australia as India started to regret not bringing in a first choice spinner, before Tim Paine and Pat Cummins tipped the balance back into the favour of the hosts as they survived a tricky period against the new ball before stumps. It was that period alone with the ball kicking, spitting and seaming off the deck which showed India's batsmen will be in for a tough time trying to chase this down. Over: 90 Australia: 6/277

STUMPS Final ball of the day and there is a huge shout for LBW! Into the pads of Cummins who squares up defending one which really did keep quite low. Would have been plumb, but it seems like there was two noises. Kohli won't review it and the players will head off the grounds. Replays suggest that might have got under the bat of Cummins. Australia's day in Perth, and their bowlers will be absolutely licking their lips at the prospect of bowling on this tomorrow. Over: 90 Australia: 6/277

Excellent day for Australia, if they can add another 50 runs tomorrow and get 330 they will be miles ahead in the Test.
