Australia will feel that they got the better of Day 1 in the second Test against India and will want to hammer home their advantage in Day 2. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of Day 2 from 1:20pm (AEDT).

Ahead of this match there was a lot spoken about the spicy, green Perth wicket as if it was some sort of chilli that could blow batsmen’s heads off at any point.

The first day was definitely entertaining and the wicket helped provide a good stage for the teams but there was nothing overly scary about the deck.

The day was a really interesting back and forth as each side had periods of dominance with overall honours going to Australia by the time the final ball of the day was bowled.

Having won the toss and electing to bat, 112 for the opening partnership was a great start for the Aussies.

Marcus Harris continues to impress and Aaron Finch will be happy that he didn’t repeat his duck from the first innings in the Adelaide Test.

They were looking very good and would have been eyeing up a good 350 first innings total at least. But the Indians came back in a great afternoon spell and got the Aussies from 0/112 to 4/148 as the bowlers got their line and length right.

They were able to get some good bounce from the pitch and the Indian batsmen would have had some concerns in the back of their minds about batting last.

The Aussies then took back some control with Shaun Marsh and Travis Head both putting on good scores.

Head will have been disappointed though with how he got himself out – he was on 58 and playing well and chose to launch his bat at a wide one from Mohammed Shami.

Unfortunately he never got hold of it and it looped to deep third man for a catch.

Pat Cummins and Tim Paine did well to survive the final period of the match with the Indians making the new ball really zip about at times.

There were a couple of balls that no one could quite believe didn’t get a wicket and Virat Kohli will be disappointed that they didn’t get one more wicket before stumps.

The first session of Day 2 is going to be an important one. Tim Paine will want his side to push on and turn their 277 runs into at least 350.

Obviously the Indians will want wickets and quickly. If they can skittle out the final four Aussies cheaply then they will feel good.

Of course it’ll then be their turn to face an excited Australian bowling line up – all of whom will be eager to get a go on this wicket.

In an era of lean top notch bats, he leads that bunch. However, there is a batsman with an average 99.94 in over 50 tests (interrupted by WW2). We will get nowhere near the Don, no one ever will. Good post mate, but the kohli comment about being the best ever is just wrong

Cheers mate. Yeah I agree - Australia are still ahead but that first session is going to be key. If the Indians can knock off another 70 without loss then they are 80 behind with 7 in hand.

Great batting so far by Kohli demonstrating why he is currently the best and will be the best ever. But unless India amass a 50 plus lead Australia should go on and win. It's great and such a change to see so many Australian players contributing runs and getting a 300 plus first innings score. Hopefully that will become regular again.

Still 80-20 in Australia's favour.. remember India's tail is long. They just need to get one wicket in the first hour tomorrow.

In a game of cricket,it takes more than that. "Took our bowling apart" he was damn lucky twice, that was without considering the edges that fall short. Another thing is, how rahane was performing had an impact. With pujara his scoring was same as the last innings of 34.

Pitch has definitely flattened out but it was a great knock by Kohli.

Kohli down second over tomorrow and they're all down for less than 200. It's that easy.

He's the best in the world. The best orthodox batsmen (Tests) and best unorthodox (T20).

Incredible innings by Kohli. India looked out of the match at 2/8. They have a shot at victory (or even a draw) now. Smith and Warner wouldn't have helped Australia today. Kohli took apart our bowlers. I don't recall any bowlers being suspended. For India to come back and with this Test on a green pitch and take a 2-0 lead in the series would almost be a changing of the guard in world cricket.

Kohli got 80?!!! Did the pitch get flat or something?

As I said before the match, they've talked up the Perth pitch before every Test for 15 years and by day two it's flat as a road or spin friendly. Imagine how benign this pitch would be without the excess green grass.

So India trail by 154 runs after a long day of grit and grind for Kohli, Pujara and Rahane. It's been another intense day of Test cricket with both sides taking it in turns to be in control but overall the Indians will feel that they've won that final session. They still have a lot to do before they are even level with the Aussies but they will be happy that they've been able to handle the Aussie pace attack well on this pitch. Speaking of the pitch - it was quite different today compared to yesterday. There wasn't really the spice to it that people were predicting and it seemed to play very well. The Aussie bowlers put in good performances but weren't able to find those killer balls as much as they would have wanted. Of course against the best batsman in the world it can be very difficult especially once he gets in. Day 3 is going to be very interesting - it's all still up for grabs and both sides need to have a good first session to tip the odds in their favour. Thank you for all your involvement today - it's been a pleasure and I'll be back for Day 4! Have a good one.

Final ball of the day from Cummins and it's knocked into the on side but the batsmen say no to any sort of single and look to head to the sheds. Over 69 India 3/172

Short one from Cummins and it forces Rahane to duck. Will that mean a yorker for the next ball? Over 68.4 India 3/172

Cummins drifts onto Kohli's legs and he clips it through to deep mid wicket. He gets 3 for that nice timing. Over 68.3 India 3/72
