Australia and India will go head-to-head at the Melbourne Cricket Ground looking to claim the ODI series, as it is currently level at 1-1. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 1:20pm (AEDT).

India were superb in Adelaide only a few days ago to level the series.

With Virat Kohli’s side set the task of chasing a total of 298, they had a fair bit to do, regardless of how flat the wicket was.

Aaron Finch would have backed his bowlers to defend that score, but when you come up against a player like Kohli, especially when he is at the top of his game, you could never feel at total ease.

The captain compiled a big hundred when it was really needed, and it ultimately allowed MS Dhoni to do what he does best – finish off the game with his combative batting style.

The wicketkeeper finished with 55 not out to compliment Kolhi’s 39th ODI hundred. With those two firing with the bat, Australia’s 298 was never going to be enough.

Australia no doubt will be disappointed due to the fact a victory in the second ODI would have ensured a series win, but it was not to be.

There have been positives to take from an Australian perspective, especially with the bat.

There were more consistent performances from the first ODI, but Shaun Marsh’s 131 in Adelaide was just a reminder that he is one of Australia’s best ODI batsman.

It is a very inexperienced squad, and with that being the case, Australia need Marsh firing with the World Cup around the corner.

Glenn Maxwell also showed his use down the order, putting together 48 runs from just the 37 balls.

There is plenty of upside to this Australian ODI side, but consistency is needed if they wish to progress as a side.

Prediction
India have the momentum after a thumping six-wicket victory at the Adelaide Oval, and with that being the case, I would fully expect Kohli’s side to continue in that fashion.

India to claim the series 2-1.

Langer loves making these hero selections. They've ALL blown up in his face.

Finch should never play cricket Test or ODI cricket for Australia again. Time to move on. They guy is 32. If he can put together a big Shield season next year then maybe he's considered for selection, but he has to earn it and justify it with big domestic innings consistently. Shaun Marsh for the ODI World Cup. No problem with that. He's simply not a Test player and never has been. Stanlake, Siddle were stupid hero selections made by Langer. Khawaja I'd hang on for a little bit but if he's on thin ice. He'd be the next to cop it though. The guy plays with no pride. Carey playing is stupid. Carey opening is even stupider. Just get Wade in there or have Handscomb keep. Enough with these rubbish hero selections.

Wade for Carey might be a consideration

Depending on how good is their catching. This series did seem two child fighting each other rather than a series.

Smith had a poor one day series against England last year. Perhaps mentally he was done after putting that much mental strength plundering England in the ashes. Prior to that series his previous 2 years in the one day form was phenomenal. As good as anyone in the world bar Kohli. And you don’t think a top 3 of Warner ???? Smith Is an improvement on Finch Carey Khawaja

How many ODIs were we winning in the year prior to sandpaper gate with Warner opening and Smith at three? I agree that Warner returning and playing like old will provide a boost but Smith is neither a game changer nor match winner in ODIs unless he has dramatically upped his forearm strength and his range of strokes in this one year of exile.

Haha well said. I think this series was a massive positive for Australia. Considering we were 2 for 30 odd off around 10 overs in all 3 games and managed to win one and were competitive in the other 2 was a big step from where we were. Warner and Smith at 3 will fix that problem. Agar at 8 and potentially Cummins at 9 Starc at 10 and Richardson 11 puts a completely different look to our batting. Potentially another 50 runs each game. I’m quietly confident of a very good World Cup now.

Dont worry, your trans tasmanian cousins will avenge this series defeat against a very ordinary indian ODI team. I predict a 1-4 best case result for India. worst case and most probable is a white wash.

Good ol' Dhoni getting it done once more. He was in such poor form in ODIs leading in to this series but has now booked his World Cup spot. And you'd think India are a very good chance of making the WC Final.

The thing I like about this comment is that it's not melodramatic.

Another series over and another series lost. These players continue to let there fan base and the entire country down. This really is the worst time to be a fan of Aussie cricket.

Dropped catches also cost Australia. Dhoni and Kohli were both dropped early.

Today he unfortunately did his best to lose the game. Put it this way he shouldn’t be laughing and smiling with his Indian mates right now.

Australia - 230 Aaron Finch's side never had enough runs to defend. Peter Handscomb the only one to get a score (58), but the main issue was the Australian side did not bat the 50 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal took 6/42 off his 10 overs for India, which proved to make a massive difference come the end of the game. India - 3/234 MS Dhoni (87 not out) and Kedar Jadhav (61 not out) saw India over the line. It proved to be a difficult chase as Australia did bowl quite well, but the Indian side remained calm. India won by 7 wickets.
