Australia will look to turn their Test cricket fortunes around when they take on a struggling Sri Lankan side in Brisbane for the first of two Tests. Follow all the action here on The Roar with our live scores and blog from 2pm (AEDT).
Look at Australia and Sri Lanka’s Test match performances since the start of 2018 and it’s not too hard to understand why they are ranked fifth and sixth in the world respectively.
Sri Lanka have won four of the 12 Tests they have played while it’s been even worse for Australia, who have won just three from 11. Of the original set of ten Test-playing nations, only Bangladesh and the West Indies have a worse record over that period.
While Australia’s troubles began with the tour of South Africa in early 2018, Sri Lanka’s issues run deeper. They have registered a few wins at home but also produced disappointing results, including their most recent 3-0 drubbing when they hosted England.
Despite these woes, Sri Lankan bowling coach Rumesh Ratnayake reckons this is a very good chance for them to register a win in Australia, something the Island nation had never done in the past.
Of course, one of the reasons for the tourists’ confidence stems from Australia’s selection issues.
There’s been so much confusion around the make-up of the current side that Kurtis Patterson, after not being selected in the original squad, was hurried into the XI at the expense of those selected before him after hitting two centuries during the CA XI warm-up game against Sri Lanka.
Patterson’s selection makes a lot of sense but he should have been in the original squad. Thankfully the selectors put their egos to one side, admitted their selection gaffe and brought him right in.
Will Pucovski and Matthew Renshaw will, as a result, sit this one out along with Peter Siddle, as Jhye Richardson replaces the injured Josh Hazlewood in the line-up.
Prediction
Australia begin as favourites in this home day-night Test but with a fragile batting order, they need to be careful not to fall to the swing and seam of the Sri Lankan bowlers.
Be sure to join The Roar for live coverage of this first day of the first Test at the Gabba from 2pm (AEDT) and don’t forget to drop a comment in the section below.

As lazy a player I've seen is Khawaja.

Great day for our young players. Burns failed again, but we simply have to back him like we backed guys like Finch and the Marsh brothers. He's more talented than those guys. I think Richardson keeps his place on this form and Starc and Hazlewood fight over that third spot. Khawaja just doesn't care. Just plays to do enough to maintain his Cricket Australia contract. The guy doesn't care, no passion for the side. His time is done. Guys like that become a cancer eventually.

If khawaja doesn't make up for his failures in 2nd innings with nothing less than a century, his time in test team is done for me. Smith is coming back at 4. Put Patterson in 3. And drop khawaja in favour of WillP.

Well Khawaja hasn't set the world on fire, with a couple of 20/20 games & 5 /1 dayers in India beginning on the 24th February and we know how great he has been overseas uh, i'd imagine we will send the same side?

Great job thanks Suneer, overall a very good day for the Aussies. Batting under lights is challenging however Usie will be furious with himself for playing that shot, it was never on. Harris looks rock solid and hopefully Lyon can hang around for a bit tomorrow.

Khawaja's lost the plot.

A good, good day of cricket for Australia. Jhye Richardson, on debut, fired the Aussie bowling with a three-wicket haul and Pat Cummins chipped in with a few the middle of the Sri Lankan innings. Mitchell Starc had a poor day to begin with but he came back well to pick up a couple towards the end. And in the twilight zone, playing under lights, Australia lost just two wickets in getting halfway through to the Sri Lankan score. They could have even ended the day one down had it not been for a rush of blood from Usman Khawaja three overs before close. That's that from me for now but will be back tomorrow with the second day's play. Cheers.

Very disappointing for Khawaja to get out. He needed to be "The Man" in this innings and take the game by the scruff of the neck. The opportunity was there.

Dilruwan could have bowled all the 11 balls he bowled at Lyon, from over the stumps. What happened was that he had gone round the stumps to Khawaja, got him out and then might have forgotten to make the switch. (unless he obviously had a plan against Lyon too from that line). Took him eight balls to realise to make the switch and immediately, almost got Lyon caught. Australia will, however, be very chuffed with the day's effort. 2/72 in reply to 144.

Three balls from round the stumps and finally, Dilruwan decides to go over the stumps... ...and a chance! Almost a wicket. Inside edges it to the right of the short-leg, who parries it to towards the leg-slip and it falls short of him too. Lyon defends the remaining two balls to end the day. 2/72 in 25.

Just not convinced by Khawaja these days. Love his guts as a fellow Raiders supporter, but...

Dilruwan continues. Probably the last over of the day. And from round the stumps too. Not sure why.

I'm out. Sounds like an awful shot from Khawaja. Nadal almost got the tennis done before stumps.

A maiden from Lakmal as Harris has those shutters firmly down. 2/72 in 24.

Night watchman Nathan Lyon has walked out at four. And he pats away the remaining deliveries in the over. All dots. Dilruwan could look at bowling over the wickets at him next over, which should the last of the day. 2/72 in 23.

You absolute goose Khawaja. Seems like he's taking his spot for granted with Smith and Warner on holidays at the moment. His spot in the team should definitely be coming under scrutiny.
