Australia will look to drill home the advantage they gained on day one when they resume their innings on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Gabba in Brisbane. The day’s play begins at 2pm AEDT and you can follow it live with The Roar below.
Jhye Richardson’s addition to Australia’s XI looked to have worked wonders for the side as he ran through the Sri Lankan top-order like a hot knife through butter.
He ended his debut bowling showing with a three-wicket haul but the mode of dismissals and the batsmen who got out did enough to push Sri Lanka on to the back-foot.
Richardson began with carving out Dinesh Chandimal with a ball that went away as the Sri Lankan captain looked to go after it and was nabbed in the slips.
But the bigger wicket was that of Sri Lanka’s best batsman in recent times, Kusal Mendis, who was done in by one that jagged back into him and then left him to hit the top of off.
And then for good measure, he also added the scalp of Dananjaya de Silva before opening the floor for Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc to also run amock.
Sri Lanka’s Test match woes from recent times were well-known but when they decided to bat first after winning the toss, it looked like a courageous decision on a bowling-friendly Gabba surface.
As it turned out, the tourists’ batsmen failed to dispel any notions about their poor form, not getting any kind of start or momentum. Except Niroshan Dickwella that is.
Keeper-batsman Dickwella used his unorthodox batting style and curious shot selection to disrupt the Aussie pacers and had it not been for his 78-ball 64, things might have been way worse for the visitors.
Still, 144 isn’t the kind of score you expect to be defended too often and with Australia having reached 2/72 at stumps, it remains to be seen what kind of tactic they come out with.
Because it was surprising to watch Marcus Harris get away with an unbeaten score of 40 without being tested out by any bouncers. And when they were actually hurled at that other end, they weren’t incisive enough.
Lahiru Kumara will also need to up the ante after an underwhelming first day with the ball because if Sri Lanka needs to make inroads with a four-man bowling attack, they need all of them to keep pegging away.
Prediction
Australia’s batsmen to pile on the misery and bat nearly the entire day to take a big lead over Sri Lanka’s 144.

Tired of seeing stark pick up tail Enders to make his figures look ok.

Cummins seems to just have a knack of getting those wickets at the most important times.

Now can we all agree that he’s done enough to earn the new ball?

I don't know if it was that dominate. That drop of Head was extremely costly

Australia will be heavy favourites to finish this off, but a question here - at what stage will Pat Cummins be given the new ball ahead of Starc? Might not be too far the way it's gone for both. That's that from me, hope to catch you soon. Cheers.

A day that comprehensively belonged to Australia and not a lot of such days have been on offer before this series. They lost two early wickets but then were reprieved by the Head-Labuschagne stand, with the duo adding 150+. Later Kurtis Patterson held one end up as the Aussies piled on a 179-run lead on a surface that has pace and bounce and at times movement too. Sri Lanka were aided by Suranga Lakmal's five-fer but he barely had any support in hot conditions. Two of the seamers fell injured, Dilruwan struggled to land the ball at most times and Australia took toll. And with just six overs to spare, it took Pat Cummins' final ball to get them the wicket they wanted.

Gone! What was that…who would have thought! Oh Cummins, you beauty. Gets the length right, the batsman had to play at it, Dimuth pushes at it and gets the edge. Caught by Paine. That wasn’t doing a lot but the previous deliveries looked to have played on his mind seemingly. Sri Lanka end the day one down.

A good final over to end the day's play. Cummins getting them to angle it in to the left-hander and move away, seam and swing both. The fifth ball, he almost sucks the batsman into playing at a wide one but Dimuth only gets an inside edge.

Poor work from Khawaja. Reacted late. He is not a natural slip fielder. Really should have caught it.

Cummins really getting some swing

Why is khawaja fielding as the no 1 slips fielder. He might have half decent hands but he’s a slug in the field. That one off Kohli was one in a million

Reaction time of .42 secs?? It is more like have that. You have .42 secs to hit the ball.

Change in the bowling from Richardson's end too. Pat Cummins takes up the attack. Last over of the day.

Poor from Khawaja. Notice he isn't really bending his knees and is bending down at the hips as Lyon comes into bowl. Starc's positioning was much better.
