Match preview:

The Australian men’s international summer begins today, with Australia hosting Sri Lanka in a three-match T20 series starting at Adelaide Oval. Join The Roar for live coverage of the first match in the T20 International series, from 2:30pm AEDT.

The domestic competitions have begun and the women’s summer opened with a demolition of Sri Lanka, but attention now turns to the men’s team and two T20 series – the first against Sri Lanka.

This match will signal the start of the host nation’s journey to the 2020 World Cup, which begins down under in a little less than 12 months.

Led by captain Aaron Finch – who is confident he can overcome a side strain and take the field – Australia’s side is a fresh mix of experienced faces.

Steve Smith returns to the squad, his last T20 International was in 2016.

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have also got the call-up, while regulars Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell remain in the middle order.

Adam Zampa should be the selected spinner; he would be feeling confident after taking two wickets and hitting a match-winning 35 runs from 15 balls playing for South Australia in the Marsh One-Day Cup on Wednesday.

Australia’s opponent this week is Sri Lanka, ranked seventh in T20s; however, the nation recently beat the number one T20 team: Pakistan.

The team was referred to as a ‘B’ squad, too, as ten Sri Lankan players withdrew from the tour due to security threats.

Following impressive performances in Pakistan, left-handed batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and bowlers Wanindu Hasaranga and Isuru Udana have retained their places in the squad.

Lasith Malinga is still bowling at 36 years of age and will captain the touring side, joined by experienced wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella.

Sri Lanka lost by one wicket to the Prime Minister’s XI in a tour match on Thursday evening at Manuka Oval.

Regular wickets throughout the Sri Lankan innings made it difficult for the touring side to really get going; Oshada Fernando top scored with 38 runs.

In the chase it came down to the last over, the Prime Minister’s XI requiring 10 runs and Sri Lanka two wickets.

Fawad Ahmed scored the squaring runs, before a wide on the last ball gave the XI the win.

Harry Nielson was best with the bat, scoring 79; while Kasun Rajitha and Lakshan Sandakan took three wickets each.

Sri Lanka will now take on Australia.

After Adelaide, the series will continue in Brisbane on Wednesday evening and at the MCG on Friday.

Prediction
Sri Lanka is on a winning run in internationals, including a 3-0 series win against Pakistan, but will meet an Australian team ready to fire.

On home soil, the Australian men will be eager to get their international summer off to a strong start.

Australia to win.

I saw Carey's missed stumping in the T20. That is enough for me. Paine took a screamer in Tassie's shield game as well. I believed Phillipe had played a shield game as keeper, so I was wrong. He keeps in the one day games, and as I read in the paper he is highly regarded by a few of the experts. Please don't parrot the lack of knowledge thing as you mate DON does. You have no idea of my cricket knowledge. Keep you insults to yourself.

Phillipe has never kept in a shield match. So how can you say he is a better keeper than Carey? That just shows the lack of cricket knowledge that you have. You probably didn’t see Carey’s one handed screamer in the shield. If I am a resident Paine critic, then obviously you are a blind Paine mark who supports everything Paine does. You were probably the only guy who defended Paine’s decision to bowl in the last ashes test.

Yes he did drop a couple of catches, and they were not that simple. His keeping was over 5 day games, when he had to keep, captain and according to the resident Paine critics (you) be expected to score runs as well. But any chance to criticize him at any opportunity will be jumped at. Carey has two hours to concentrate, and still missed an easy stumping. There are far better keepers going around in shield cricket, Philippe for example, and he is just as good a bat.

Carey is an outstanding keeper. Only last season, many of you were dismissing him because you didn't rank his batting. Critics always forget what they say.

Yes - he dropped a couple of catches in the Ashes - but Paine's keeping to the spinners is excellent. Carey has a long way to go if he wants the test keeping position. Paine is a nautural keeper who can bat. Carey is a batsman who can keep but is still a work in progress in this department.

It's hit and bash cricket. Finch tried and failed. Carey didn't bat, missed a stumping from what I saw. Let's go with them.

Australia win by 134 runs! That is a dominant victory for the Australians, brilliant in every aspect - the only loss came at the toss! In the second innings, Shanaka top scored with 17 runs, Perera next best with 16 and Malinga and Oshada finished with 13 each. It was a near perfect bowling performance by the Aussies - that last wicket never came, though! Zampa 3/14 was great with the ball, as was fellow spinner Agar 1/13. Starc (2/18) and Cummins (2/27) took two wickets each. Very one-sided match today, Australia far too good. AUS 2/233 SL 9/99

So Aussie bowlers are trying to bowl entire quota of 20 overs. Good.
