Almost six months since they left the field at an empty SCG, Australia make their return to international cricket at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton as they face England in the first of three T20s. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3am (AEST).

Any clash between the two old rivals is a must-watch and this series is no exception, especially as Australia and England are the top two ranked T20 sides in the world.

With Test cricket done and dusted for the summer, England are able to select their first-choice squad for this series.

As such, Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Mark Wood have been included.

Ben Stokes has not been selected as he continues to spend time with his ill father in New Zealand, while Joe Root misses out despite scoring two half-centuries for Yorkshire in the Vitality Blast last weekend.

Jason Roy remains out with a side strain picked up during training for the series against Pakistan. Roy will stay in the bio-secure bubble in the hope that he can play in the ODI series that follows this T20 series.

However, with Tom Banton doing well at the top of the order with Jonny Bairstow, Roy’s absence hasn’t affected England in the slightest.

As for Australia, they’ve named a 21-man combined squad for the limited-overs tour of England, including potential debutants Josh Philippe, Daniel Sams and Riley Meredith.

Philippe played a key role in the Sydney Sixers’ victory in February’s BBL final against the Melbourne Stars, with his 29-ball half-century earning him player of the match. There’s been a lot of talk about his talents, but any inclusion in the final XI will be dependent on where he can be fitted into the batting order.

Glenn Maxwell returns to international action for the first time since taking a mental health break at the end of last year. Nathan Lyon, Marcus Stoinis and Andrew Tye are also back.

Prediction
With both teams fielding strong sides, this series is set up to be a close one.

That said, England appear to be the favourites, especially having successfully chased down a target of 196 on Sunday and coming close to chasing down 191 on Tuesday. Considering there were a few first-choice players missing for the series against Pakistan, surely England can be even stronger for the series against Australia?

A stronger side is needed for a stronger opponent in Australia, but the England T20 team is in rude health and their recent good form should continue into this series.

Can I just apologise again for getting that wrong. I honestly couldn't find the irony in that but, while that is the case, I should not have got too over the top about it. That's regrettable so I wanted to offer my apologies again to you. Cheers

It is a good question Joshua but I think I would place Labuschagne at 3 and Smith at 4, that worked well last year. And Maxwell would drop down to 5 or 6. Not an easy decision but Labuschagne I believe needs to play.

Don't do it again! So now my Englishness is going to be used against me. Great. I felt you were being very genuine in your comment there. Now I feel stupid...

Whoa, settle down lad. Irony obviously lost on you as an Englishman

Where would you pop Labuschagne in the order Harry? I'd say Warner, Finch, Smith and Maxwell are pretty much locked in where they are. Yeah, some poor dismissals from Warner and Maxwell but they're going to learn from that. Or should Australia be more fluid with their batting lineup?

All I’m getting from that comment is bitterness. I’m actually an England supporter so based off your use of the pronoun ‘us’, I clearly did a decent job at being neutral in my commentary. Even from a neutral’s perspective, that was a good watch. Also, you do not get to tell me what I’m allowed to describe as a good watch.

Agree that he's better off out of this side - if he can't open, can't see the benefit. Would've thought any of M.Marsh, Henriques, Phillepe or Wade would be more effective there.

Live and learn. I expect better as the rust wears off. Plus, please play Labuschagne.

A top order batsman in a T20 match "must" be able to lift their scoring rate otherwise he's not much use as a T20 batsman imo, It's not test cricket.

I thought it was well known that he is a top order player, and struggles too often when tasked with finishing. Obviously not.

Joshua, I don’t ever enjoy watching us lose to England and needing 40 off 36 with 9 wickets in hand and losing means this game is so far from what I’d call a good watch it’s not funny

Ah crap, just home from dinner and checking this result. I guess we can blame rustiness but this was a very bad choke

I honestly have no idea why he's in the side to begin with as he's bog average with the bat incapable of lifting the run rate as witnessed many times in the past and is just average with the ball. The game was there to be won and Stoinis as usual let the side down.

England v Australia is always a good watch and tonight has been no different. England have won the first game of this T20 series by 2 runs. It felt like England didn’t score enough runs despite a late charge from Dawid Malan, who got a half century. That was certainly the case when Warner and Finch were comfortably hitting England around the park in the first half of the Australian innings. Then came the collapse. And that is how this game was decided. Some very poor dismissals, particularly from Warner, who didn’t need to make that much room and expose all of his stumps in the way he did. Stoinis tried to go big but there were too many swings and misses. How much of this is down to not playing an international for 175 days? Australia had set themselves up so well but their collapse undid all that hard work. Congratulations should go to England, obviously, because they played well when it mattered most but you can’t help but go away from this match feeling a wee bit annoyed from an Australian perspective that they just fell short. The second match of the series is on Sunday at 11.15pm AEST. There will be live scores for that match on The Roar. I will be back on Wednesday morning Australian time from just before 3am AEST for the series decider. Hope you enjoyed the blog. The final scoreboard is above the comments section. Have a great weekend.

Managed to snaffle defeat from the jaws of victory. Can't blame Stoinus completely but he is not up to it as a finisher.

Just to confirm: Australia scored 6-160. Stoinis not out on 23 from 18 balls. From 1-98 to 2-124 to 5-133 to 6-148. Wowee what a game!

Final ball of the match. 5 needed from it. Stoinis on strike. A Yorker from Curran means they can only come back for 2. England have won by 2 runs. What an absolute shocker of a collapse by the Aussies. They were in the box seat halfway through their innings but England have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the typical English way. I said it'd be a good one and boy was I right!

All the gushing praise from Warne makes this all the more cringy.

How much poor batting is needed for Stoinis before he stops gushing enough to make me blush? We collapsed pretty hard here, some poor shot choices here, we were down to a run a ball with the smith/Warner for a moment, Smith probably didn’t need to go so hard on his shot, but I will forgive him, it’s mostly everyone else running down that line up that just could have played so much more restrained.

Lucky, lucky boy, Mr Stoinis! Curran bowls a Yorker and Stoinis dispatches it for two runs. 5 needed off the final ball. So a six needed for the win or four for the super over (shudders)
