Australia’s 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup campaign kicks off against hosts India in the city of Chennai. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEDT).

After a string of losses in South Africa and India, the Aussies have bounced back well in their past few games.

Pitches in Chennai are usually slow, so going all out attack in the PowerPlay is crucial. If David Warner and Mitchell Marsh can successfully do this with the bat, the likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne can control the innings in the middle overs. With no specialist spinner outside of Adam Zampa, pressure is on Glenn Maxwell to deliver with the ball.

India will be sorely missing the services of Axar Patel, but replacement Ravichandran Ashwin will be relishing the opportunity to play another World Cup game in his hometown.

Rohit Sharma is arguably the best batter in the world on turning wickets, and the Indian team will be hoping their skipper leads from the front. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are capable of causing havoc with the new ball.

Prediction

Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses. The Aussies have faced India in Chennai in 2023, and won that ODI contest in March.

This is too tight to call; however, if this is your traditional Chepauk pitch, then the team batting first will win.

...all part of his magnificent and inevitable development towards his destiny as The New Sobers. I like Hardie and think he is a damn good crickete, but he still has a long long way to go to reach the levels of an Henriques. And he's light years away from the Dwarshius Planet

The Marsh drop looks even worse now. Why not more overs from Green? Two?

I had to sleep. Getting 3 early wickets and not going on with it was unforgivable. It was that tragic Clint Eastwood bought the rights to the story.

MATCH SUMMARY - Australia 199 all out (49.3 overs) lose to India 4/201 (41.2 overs) by six wickets and 52 balls to spare. Australia needed at least 240 to be competitive and give their bowlers a chance. Despite having India 3/2 after two overs, there was no scoreboard pressure on India as they had to barely go over four an over to chase down 200. Some harsh lessons learnt for the Australian top six. India's bowlers were class, especially their spin trio. They were relentless, especially after the first drinks break. Choking the opposition with spin is a trait many teams have successfully achieved in Chennai. Despite a shaky start, the stars in Kohli and Rahul ensured India started their WC campaign with a relatively easy win in the end.
