Australia’s 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup campaign kicks off against hosts India in the city of Chennai. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEDT).
After a string of losses in South Africa and India, the Aussies have bounced back well in their past few games.
Pitches in Chennai are usually slow, so going all out attack in the PowerPlay is crucial. If David Warner and Mitchell Marsh can successfully do this with the bat, the likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne can control the innings in the middle overs. With no specialist spinner outside of Adam Zampa, pressure is on Glenn Maxwell to deliver with the ball.
India will be sorely missing the services of Axar Patel, but replacement Ravichandran Ashwin will be relishing the opportunity to play another World Cup game in his hometown.
Rohit Sharma is arguably the best batter in the world on turning wickets, and the Indian team will be hoping their skipper leads from the front. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are capable of causing havoc with the new ball.
Prediction
Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses. The Aussies have faced India in Chennai in 2023, and won that ODI contest in March.
This is too tight to call; however, if this is your traditional Chepauk pitch, then the team batting first will win.
