The Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers will be looking to kick their BBL|09 campaigns off on the right foot when they clash at the SCG tonight. Join The Roar for live scores and updates throughout the game from 7:10pm (AEDT).
The Sixers will be ruing their semi-final loss to eventual champions the Melbourne Renegades last season, and will be keen to bounce back this time around.
They come into BBL|09 having gained Englishman James Vince in the second half of last season, who joins countryman Tom Curran. Jackson Bird also makes his return to the side after a little stint at the Melbourne Stars.
Coach Greg Shippard will feel pretty confident with the experience he has in his side, which includes the likes of Sean Abbott, Moises Henriques and Peter Nevill.
On top of that, they also have national stars Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith, who they’ll hope will be available for a couple of games later in the campaign.
The Perth Scorchers come off a season they’d like to forget, in which they finished bottom of the league with four wins and ten losses.
They head into BBL|09 having lost Michael Klinger (retirement, now coach of the Renegades), Shaun Marsh (Renegades), and Nathan Coulter-Nile and Hilton Cartwright (both Stars).
While they’ve lost some handy players, they’ve managed to secure the signing of spinner Fawad Ahmed from the Sydney Thunder, who picked up 13 wickets in BBL|08. They’ve also gained Kurtis Patterson (Thunder), as well as two promising English imports in Liam Livingstone and Chris Jordan.
Prediction
Opening games of a new season are always hard to predict. While the Sixers have a strong squad, the Scorchers come in with a clean slate and a host of fresh and hungry new players.Perth to start their campaign with a win away from home.

Interesting. Certainly didn't seem like 12.5k there last night. Felt like closer to 8k.

Sixers crowds last year were 17k, 22k, 16k. 15k, 21k, 8k and finished with 34k for the Sydney Thunder game.

Hmmm...not sure I believe that. Sixers traditionally get poor crowds before Christmas and they didn't have any superstars playing, so it's not a huge surprise.

Summary- Sixers with a commanding 8 wicket win in front of their home crowd at the SCG. Coming into this game there was hope the Scorchers could make a contest of this game with some of their inclusions like Livingston, Chris Jordan and Fawad Ahmed. Unfortunately it was their top order batsmen that collapsed when they needed them. Had it not been for a late surge by Ahmed at the end of the innings this game could've been over a bit quicker. Sixers have a strong team in all areas and the addition of Tom Curran will no doubt be a great inclusion for them as they make a push for the title this season. Curran finished with 3-32 in his 4 overs. Ben Dwarshuis also had a solid performance both with the ball and in the field to finish 2-15 in his four overs. As for the batting side we need not look further than man of the match Josh Philippe who carried the Sixers to this victory with 81 (44) with 11 fours and 3 sixes. He now leads the tournament for runs made and will look to continue that form against the Hobart Hurricanes on Friday. As for the Scorchers they will return home to face off against reining champions the Melbourne Renegades at Optus Stadium on Saturday. That's a wrap for tonight's coverage of the BBL. Thank you everyone that followed the blog and be sure to follow the live blogs right here on The Roar for the rest of the BBL season!

Well previous versions of the Scorchers made defending small totals their trademark, but not here...realistically always well short of a competitive score

Agar and Turner haven't exactly responded well to their shock inclusions in the ODI side. You'd be having second thoughts based on those performances.

I couldn't understand why Scorchers were $1.90 vs Sixers $1.95. I backed Sydney like the smart punters do. Selfish stuff from Mitch Marsh just content with a run a ball.

Gee that's poor.

SIX Philippe with biggest shot of the night down the leg side to land on the roof of the SCG! What a way to finish! Philippe finishes a superb innings with 81 (44) with 11 fours and 3 sixes! The Sixers win this one comfortably by 8 wickets
Jeff

What’s the SCG crowd? 10-15k? Or is that being generous?
Jay
Roar Rookie
FOUR Philippe moves to 75 and will be presented the golden cap for the most runs in the tournament this season 1 more run to win for the Sixers
Jay
Roar Rookie
SIX Captain Henriques slams it down the leg side for 6 more! Might prevent Philippe from getting that elusive golden cap!
Jay
Roar Rookie
7 off the Ahmed over as the Sixers need just 14 off 36 balls to win. End of the 14th over Sixers 2-118
Jay
Roar Rookie
Jordan another great over going 1-3 as he tries his best for his new team End of Over 13 Sixers 2-111

More debate about DRS will surely come after this game. Is it time to introduce it to the BBL?
Jay

Captain Henriques comes to the crease for the Sixers
Jay
Roar Rookie
Replays shows it didn't go anywhere near his bat and looks to have maybe hit the stumps on the way through. None the less Vince has to go as Jordan grabs his second wicket Sixers 2-108
Jay

APPEAL Sounds like an inside edge off Vince to be caught by Inglis behind the stumps They'll have a look at this one.
