England’s second innings will resume at 4/96 on Day 5 at Lord’s, as they look to bat Australia out of the game. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the day, starting from 8pm (AEST).

Australia resumed 4/80 on Day 4 looking to pass England’s first innings total of 258, with Steve Smith (13 not out) and Matthew Wade (zero not out) at the crease.

The day started well for England, as Stuart Broad found the edge of Wade’s bat, which saw him dismissed for six, as Rory Burns took the catch at gully.

Tim Paine joined Smith at the crease, and both of Australia’s leaders were able to steady the ship. Smith brought up his half-century just before lunch, which meant Australia were sitting 5/155 at the main break.

When play resumed after lunch, Jofra Archer dismissed Paine for 23, as the Australian captain was caught by Jos Buttler at short leg.

Shortly after, Smith took a blow to the arm off Archer, but he continued his innings and showed superb mental strength.

However, he copped another short ball from Archer, which hit him on the neck, and that forced him off the pitch due to the severity of the blow. He was 80 not out.

Peter Siddle came to the crease and batted some time, but he could only manage nine runs in his innings, as Chris Woakes found the outside edge of his bat to dismiss him, and Jonny Bairstow took the catch.

Smith returned to the arena, but he was dismissed pretty quickly, as he left a straight delivery off Woakes, which meant he was deemed lbw for a superb 92.

Nathan Lyon managed to score six runs in his innings before Jack Leach dismissed him lbw. Patrick Cummins was the final wicket to fall, as Broad and Bairstow combined.

Australia were dismissed for 250 just as tea arrived, which meant they fell eight runs short of England’s first innings total. Broad was the pick of England’s bowlers, as he finished with four wickets.

Woakes and Archer picked up five wickets between them. Leach finished with one scalp next to his name.

England’s second innings got off to a horrendous start after tea, as Jason Roy, who was dismissed for two, was caught and bowled by Cummins.

Joe Root quickly followed the next ball, as Cummins found his outside edge, and Paine completed the catch. A Cummins hat-trick did not eventuate, however.

Joe Denly and Burns showed some fight, but Denly was dismissed for 26, as Siddle took a catch off his own bowling.

Siddle struck again shortly after, as he found the outside edge of Burns’ bat, and the opener was dismissed for 29, as Paine took the catch. Ben Stokes (16 not out) and Buttler (10 not out) are currently at the crease.

England finished the day 4/96, with a lead of 104 runs. This Test match is likely to end in a draw unless some sort of miracle occurs.

However, if there is to be a winner, Australia have somewhat put themselves in a position to claim a victory.

Taking four English wickets in the final session yesterday means they are a chance, but they would have to take some early wickets on Day 5.

If England bat time and get some runs in doing so, Australia just would not have the time to score the runs required for victory if they were to bat again.

The weather is decent for Day 5, also. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 8pm (AEST).

Wade as much as I dislike him was a major reason behind us winning the first test. We have the bowlers that can take 20 wickets in all conditions that England can throw at us. I have zero confidence Marsh would have or could have made that ton that wade made. And his bowling would have added nothing.

his 100 was good. but it was built against a 4 man attack with moeen so far out of form and stokes bowling not well. after smith, head had got the runs going. Exactly - To all those waving the Wade flag read the above again carefully. He did well, yes, but we need it when in strife. harsh but true.

thanks dp as i have said before, i love cricket. had all the cards and even the maccas posters when they started the wsc. but towards the end of ponting era/clarke/watson/lehman/warner time turned me off it massively. now i am back because of people like paine etc. nice blokes etc. no wa nkers. so i might be behind the times a bit on here. for me though yesterday was a classic example of needing a 5th option. josh was ordinary in the 2nd innings. cummins tried his best. lyon got owned. wade added what exactly? marsh can add 2 runs and atleast give a bowling option. ps before the wade defenders a la warnie join in. his 100 was good. but it was built against a 4 man attack with moeen so far out of form and stokes bowling not well. after smith, head had got the runs going. wade needed to stand up yesterday and say i can play test cricket and bat for 12 overs. leach showed he couldn't. harsh but true.

I finally saw it. A bounce in any language, yet close enough that - from what I've heard from many cricketers who play at that level - one might forgive Root for thinking he caught it (until he saw the replay). The 'bunker'/third umpire should have picked that up.

 I seriously doubt they have the batting to handle that.

LOL.. you might not get much support mate, I've been beating the allrounder drum for a while and getting howled down by the 6/4 brigade. But seriously, you should have 5 bowlers, it provides more cover for varying pitch/weather conditions, game conditions, bowlers having off day or an injury and at the moment our bowlers are outscoring half our batsmen.

not denying that. today a guy on his 7th test outbowled on him on the same pitch. by some margin. 0 wickets added to his haul today. but his sixes column did increase. all i am saying is we need more than 4 bowlers. wade is a luxury. add in an all rounder to cover for lyon in case he has another day like today. it's called being practical rather being defensive. reality.

for me there is. we have 4. a fifth is helpful especially when one of the 4 like lyon today couldn’t close down an end. wade added zero this test. atleast that was more though than warner’s -100.

He had an extended run of dismal performances and shouldn’t even be in the squad. Has done nothing to earn a recall. On the basis of the first two tests, there’s nothing to suggest we need another bowler.

As suss as it gets. One shot clearly showed the ball on the ground and it bounces up into his hand. Another shot was more circumspect with fingers wedged in there but for me ball on grass clearly.

I like that idea. Starc, Cummins and Pattinson. Let’s show them what 3 relentless 150+ quicks going short looks like.

Have to agree. Not inspiring. Only Smith, obviously great, with a positive contribution from Head.
