Australia will resume 3/170 to begin the second day of the fourth Test of the 2019 Ashes series. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 2, starting from 8pm (AEST).

Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bat on Day 1, which was the correct decision, as the wicket looked very flat.

However, David Warner was dismissed for a duck to begin the match. The opener went to leave the delivery from Stuart Broad, but the ball caught the toe of his bat, and Jonny Bairstow took the catch.

Marcus Harris shortly followed, as Broad trapped him LBW, which saw the opener depart for 13.

Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith came together with the score 2/28, but they were able to steady the ship, as they both got to lunch with the score 2/98.

Just as the second session was about to get underway, the rain hit Manchester, which caused a delay in play.

After a lengthy delay, play did resume. Labuschagne brought up his half-century, and then the rain came back.

However, it was a very short delay, which allowed Smith to also bring up his half-century.

Once Smith reached that milestone, Labuschagne was dismissed shortly after for 67, as he was bowled by Craig Overton. The partnership Labuschagne and Smith put on was worth 117 runs.

Travis Head came to the crease and he was able to get through to tea with Smith. Australia went into the break 3/170.

The rain returned just as the final session of the day was about to get underway, and it ultimately ended the opening day of the fourth Test.

Smith (60 not out) and Head (18 not out) will both be looking to make big runs on Day 2, to ultimately put their nation in control of the match.

There is also a bit of rain around on the second day, but we will see some play. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 2, starting from 8pm (AEST).

its a two way tie. siddle comes in for the dropped player i suspect for the oval where we definitely want an extra bowler. Its tempting to drop warner down the list but wade could rip a 50 out of nowhere on flat deck. I tend to think wades had too many chances in the past . His tecnhnique is terrible in england

He was also involved in that terrible business with Ponsonby in Helsinki. Office took 5 years to recover from that besmirking indiscretion.

On Day 2, Australia’s first innings resumed at 3/170, with Steve Smith (60 not out) and Travis Head (18 not out) the two batsmen at the crease. Smith hit a couple of early boundaries, but Head could not do the same, as he was dismissed for 19. Stuart Broad trapped Head LBW, which brought Matthew Wade to the crease. Wade did not last long, either, as he was dismissed for 16. Wade looked to go large against Jack Leach, but he skied the ball, and Joe Root took the catch at mid-on. Tim Paine joined Smith at the crease, and the Australian captain helped Smith get to another Test century just before the lunch break. Australia went into the main break 5/245. Once play resumed after lunch, England thought they had Smith very early, as Leach found his outside edge, and Ben Stokes took the catch at first slip. However, Leach overstepped, which meant Smith survived due to the no-ball. That ultimately led to Smith reaching 150. Paine reached a milestone of his own in the second session, also, as he reached his first half-century of the series. However, he was dropped twice throughout the middle session. Both Smith and Paine were able to get through till tea, with the score 5/369. However, straight after the tea break, Paine was dismissed first ball of the session for 58, as Craig Overton found his outside edge, and Jonny Bairstow took the catch. Pat Cummins came to the crease, but he was dismissed quickly for four, as Leach found the outside edge of his bat, and Stokes took the catch at first slip. Despite losing a couple of wickets early in the session, it did not stop Smith from getting to his double-century. Smith was eventually dismissed by Root for 211, as he was caught by Joe Denly going for the reverse sweep. Mitchell Starc piled on the pain for England, as he compiled an unbeaten 54 runs from 58 deliveries. Nathan Lyon also chipped in with an unbeaten 26. Paine declared with Australia’s first innings total at 8/497. Rory Burns and Denly were given the task of batting 10 overs before stumps. However, Denly could not survive, as he was dismissed by Cummins for four. The opener was caught at short leg by Matthew Wade. Craig Overton came in as nightwatchman, and he, alongside Burns, survived until the end of the day. England are currently 1/23. Overton - 3 not out Burns - 15 not out England: 1/23 Overs: 10

I have seen better 10 over bursts, but England is still deep in trouble, will have to bat well tomorrow to keep themselves alive. Hopefully we can come out and show patience and class wth the ball.
