I'm not clear why he was dropped to be honest, Micko. I know what words came from the sectors mouths but as you say, he was their best in both New Zealand & South Africa and without Root, I'd have thought they'd want their best, most experienced bowlers to limit the Windies scoring. This is also the First Test and it's imperative the side gets off to a winning start.
I'm also sure Broad would have returned better figures than 1 wicket of the number 11 batsman for 74 off 22 overs.
You're right, they're certainly looking ahead, though the interview I heard with one of the selectors suggested they thought they needed raw pace in the current Test? Not sure about that.
I'd have thought the Poms are trying to copy Australia by having a battery of quicks, Ryan. Broad, Anderson, Wood & Archer will most likely share the bowling duties, but I think they're one quick short as well as a decent spinner. I don't think guys like Tremlett or Woakes are the answer and I also wonder how much faith they have in Dom Bess to take wickets in Australia?
The raw pace yeah seems to be strongly desired, even at home where it's arguably not essential.
Hardly the beginning of the end for Broad (or is it?) but there seems already a huge emphasis on the tour to Australia in 18 months time where that pace will be vital
The guys upset but the whole interview suggests the selectors and/or Stokes explained fully why he was left out of this game ie they wanted raw pace and that Stokes was still a huge part of the Test squad over the next few months.
Nothing here, move on.

Yeah cannot understand why it was deemed a priority for this test! Perhaps one raw quick but including Archer & Wood both was very bold

A weird decision still. We wouldn't drop Glen McGrath for "raw pace" would we?
