By The Roar / Editor

The West Australian has admitted that it was Warner who asked him to tamper with the ball.

The interview seemed very scripted and taught us nothing we didn't already know. Gilly didn't follow up with any 'hard' questions when he had the chance. Bancroft's explanation that he did it to fit in with the team and not let the team is complete b.s. surely if he had never seen this happen before then he would have a moral dilemma of cheating and that he didn't realise what he was doing yet anyone who has played cricket from the under 12's knows the rules regarding ball management. This is all a controlled and managed damage control exercise to save the rest of the squad who probably all knew about it. And Bancroft; Smith; and Warner are acting under instruction to help get a spot back in the team.

The real problem lies in CA covering up the truth. If the full story was known, then these 3 will not have anything new to divulge. There are some key contradictions which clearly indicate that we only know half the story. - South Africans setup the camera's to detect this, only because they already suspected cheating at the previous test, when reverse swing occurred in the 30th over. So the cheating was not a single event, but systemic. - Bowlers are in charge of managing the condition of the ball, so for only 3 batsman to be implicated is farcical. It's highly likely that there are a few bowlers in leadership positions still shivering in their boots waiting for something new to be revealed. - The 3 implicated have been through a process of psychological recovery. What they say now will be based on what is best for their own recovery and not necessarily an unbiased view. As for David Warner, I suspect he will be back in the team because that will be the basis for him to take the rap and keep quiet. If he talks, then there will not be a big impact on the CA admin as those responsible have already been fired, Peavers, Sutherland, Howard and Lehman, but I suspect it will impact the bowlers.

Very poor commentary and timing from Bancroft. As for Warner, I've already had a huge commentary so if you missed it - think twice before you judge Warner and go and have a think about how you would have reacted with a crowd AND the South African cricket officials shaming your wife in front of your kids. You think only Dave Warner was upset with those face masks?? Let's see you be rational with what he was dealing with. Sure, he made a bad call but no-one can go judging him. Leave him alone and let him rebuild and don't join the people throwing him under the bus.

I feel depressed when I heard Bancroft seem to say that ball tampering is equal to not fitting in to the team. Forget culture I would like to think that a grown man of 25 would know the difference between right and wrong. Although not a crime, ball tampering is against the rules and spirit of the game, not fitting in is a social problem. I have lost whatever respect I had for Bancroft. Keith Hurst sports fanatic

He says he wanted to "fit in" and didn't want to "let the team down". It sounds to me that there is more that Bancroft isn't saying, and what was going on was more than just a first time ball tampering between two players. Why would he feel that ball tampering would help him fit in, or make him feel like if he didn't do it, he was letting the team down if it was just between himself and Warner? Just a personal joy of helping the team? I don't think so. Was what he was saying his experience, or was that was told to him? My guess is, is that he'd probably seen something happen before, and for him to be, and feel a part of the team, he had to pay his dues. He threw Warner under the bus and neither should play internationally together again. It will only cause tension and disunity on and off the field.

Get real, what a dopey bloke! He wouldn't have been kicked out of the team for refusing it. This bloke had made a pretty pathetic contribution with the bat and was lucky to be picked for South Africa staring XI tests. His highest score was made in dead time of a match with Warner giving him more of the strike. Who says he will get picked again for Australia, when there are others now ahead of him? The bans should have also included no contact with the current team or training with them, including Big Bash. I couldn't believe the Scorchers allowed him with the squad, let alone got to hang out with the Australian team when training in Perth. It wouldn't surprise me that these blokes were still being paid their respective retainers by the ACB. It should have been nil income for 12 months from ACB.

If players at FC level knew about it and the South Africans were watching to catch them out it would be naive to think the team were clueless. Check out comments Smith said about Faf tampering. Smithy basically said tampering was something a lot of teams were doing to a degree. He didn’t see it as anything new.

Yep, spot on, the whole team new, and Warner just thought bugger it, I’m going to take a massive hit and take the blame for the entire team. Good bloke

The biggest lie is the whole team new and Lehman would have condoned it. Warner maybe the leader of the band but those in leadership position and actively participated are no less guilty

It’s time for them all to get over it. Bancroft throwing Warner under a bus, you’re a grown man for god sake. Langer-Lehmann makes me think how good Bobby Simpson was.

Seriously, is this bloke as dopey as he sounds? He couldn't bring himself to let the team down; couldn't sleep knowing it etc....Earth to Cameron; you should have said a resounding no to Warner. You were not a start struck kid. You are all as bad as each other. You know, I want Smith and Warner to bat - but this whole redemption thing is giving me the irrits. Mea culpa for a buck Mr Smith? I was dead against the long bans but I now think CA got it right. Sure, bring them back (if the culture can handle it, especially Warner) but never as Captain or vice Captain - that ship has sailed.

You can't rat on someone like that. Bancroft is a man in his late 20's. He's not taking responsibility for part. I was just following orders is no excuse. No doubt our bowlers were in on it. They would have noticed the unusual scuffing immediately. Warner was one component of a grubby culture
