I love that this game saw the script of predictability thrown out the window. I wonder if anyone took Sri Lanka at 500-1??
If they'd been playing Pakistan there might be a serious investigation.......hang on (remembering Hansie Cronje).....

There was a difference in the perceived 'value' of the runs Australia made in Brissie v SL compared to Canberra - the main reason being that SL had to replace it's entire 3 man pace attack with only a matter of days to prepare for the 2nd test.
Far from ideal - let alone that one was to debut and the other 2 had only 5 tests between them.
The comparison to this test in Durban is that they haven't had to deal with that short term turmoil. They got Lakmal back and while he didn't take a bag of wickets - he held it tight and created pressure which none of them could sustain in Canberra.
Clearly there's a talent base there. Australia were 3 fer not much each time as were RSA in the first innings.
Good on Sri Lanka - they learned from Canberra. Nothing though lessens the vulnerability of Sri Lanka in Canberra. That was a moment in time when they were at 'rock bottom' in that respect.
And for South Africa - - need to avoid scheduling matches at Durban (interestingly, Mitch Starc's last decent game statistically before the Canberra game).
What a sensational result for Sri Lanka. This is what makes Test cricket such a great game and Sri Lanka will get such a boast of confidence from here.
Absoluttely sensational performance by the Sri Lankans and Perera in particular to stand up to the South Africans and knock them off at Durban - for the last partnership to score 78 runs and win the match is fairy tale stuff - what a wonderful day for test cricket and sport in general.

Interesting fact is that South Africa have only won once in the last ten years at Durban.

One of the greatest wins ever. A pity the SA players runs are devalued by being against weak Sri Lanka.
