Yes first innings for 11 months jwa not ready for first test on that basis alone needs two or three matches to get his eye in as this was against the sa seconds . Low quality opponents Two leagues below England . He should not play first or second test let alone any

The team Paine is playing against is SA 2nd eleven. In other words the 13th to 24th best players in SA. I am sure there a few young players in that side that the SA selectors would expect to be in their shield side shortly, and who knows maybe a test player or two. Hardly an amateur clun side.

Oh by the way the woman is 47 years old, not a young girl. Texts were only over two days. As quoted in the press was she trolling Paine at the time?. One text she sent "when I am good I am good, when I'm bad I an brilliant." The other was sent a couple of hours before an ashes test match "I will think naughty thoughts about you while I am watching TV." Paine was stupid to have followed up with his picture of his d..k, but the banter seemed consensual and that was verified by two separate enquiries. She is for up to 63 counts of stealing, and the case has had to be adjourned many times due to the woman repeatedly n ot turning uo in court.

Actually he made 1. So what. First innings for 11 months. And as for a team of nobodies, these are the states 2nd elevens, therefore the next best 12 players of each state outside the current shield teams. There is probably some very good up and coming shield players, and who knows maybe a test cricketer or two playing in these games. Carey only made 6, 7 and 0 in his last two shield games facing very average attacks. He is averaging only 29 in shield cricket this season and that is thanks to one knock of 66no.

And then Tim Paine was out for 0 second ball against second string nobodies . How much evidence is there now to drop him he’s got to go

I think Paine doing enough keeping and batting to keep spot, ‘if he wasn’t captain’. I don’t think they’d drop him if he was just in team. I don’t fully agree with this stand sports players are held, but Plenty fans do and the media do which makes it difficult. Saying all that, the disruption to team and ammo for Poms me there fans I think C.A. will like a clean break, it just they not too confident (knocking the door down almost) with the options in captaining and keeping

You must have inside information. I have read umpteen reports on the game and can find no reference to a dropped catch. Can you tell me where I can find this information. Or is this just hoping that he did drop a catch.

Correct this one off match is all we have to go on for Paine this year really and it wasn't even at shield level . I'm sure Carey and Inglis would have performed just as well with gloves if not better. I think paine dropped a catch yesterday as well which has not been noted here as usual by the Paine pr groupies

General paines average was bumped up more recently with a poor Pakistan and kiwi tour here where all batsman club.oed runs batting first. besides that and one good knock against India it’s all been on home soil and he’s been mediocre with bat . He’s been terrible touring. Carey averages 62 with first class cricket in last 12 months. he averaged 60 plus In last world cup . There is no comparison now. Carey is the superior batsman in the last three or four years and by some distance really . Moreover, Paine will retire end of summer . He just wants his ego swansong once again he is not putting his country first .

General he's the Australian captain if it were smith you'd be all over him. Smith was over sanctioned in his prime for a poor reaction to a ridiculous scenario warner created . Timmy had full knowledge of his deeds that would not be appropriate for an Australian captain. Paine was mediocre with gloves against India last summer and is ageing we need to move on and allow Carey and inglis to flourish and integrate . All his selection will do is damage and distract Australia when Carey and inglis deserve their chance . This match was against a local seconds. Completely different at shield and international level . Paine hasn't played enough cricket to be selected in last 9 months either . He needs to let go and do the right thing for Australia not himself

Carey has 4 hundreds at state level in recent seasons. He’s 6 years younger. He’s not injury prone. Need I go on?

The key point about keeping ability is this: The proportion of catches taken (total taken over total taken + total dropped) and proportion of stumpings made, are better measures to compare keeping quality. Often, one can’t be confident about the conclusions made from comparisons of FC averages with test averages, because it is not only better bowling attacks in tests, that are different between FC cricket and test cricket. As one example of a difference: batsmen concentrate harder in tests. And there are many more differences that could be important in determining performances. Gilly’s test average was 47.6 but his FC average was 44.2.

I was making the point that Paine's test average is nearly 33, whereas Carey's FC average is 35.5. Carey batting against inferior attacks than what Paine has had to face. Yes Paine has Cummins and Hazlewood to keep to. But Marsh had Lillee and Thompson etc, and Healy and Hadden had McGrath, Gillespie and Warne etc. Elite bowlers all of them. So the fact that Paine keeps to Cummins has little bearing on his dismissal rate. Paine missed seven years of cricket and has rarely played shield cricket since he came into the test side.

Payne’s FC average is 30.2, Carey’s FC average is 35.7. At 30, Carey is 7 years younger than Paine, so age-related issues are less likely to affect Carey’s future batting and keeping performances than Paine’s. Dismissal rate is not a good measure of keeping performance mainly because it is also a function of the bowlers’ capabilities. Any particular keeper’s catches per match would, (almost always) be higher if he kept to Cummins than if he kept to a 1st-grade bowler for example. The proportion of catches taken (total taken over total taken + total dropped) and proportion of stumpings made, are better measures to compare keeping quality, but I don’t think those stats are available.
