Following a lengthy three-week break between races, Formula One gets back into gear and returns to continental Europe for Round 2 of the 2021 world championship at the famed Imola circuit in Italy. Join me on The Roar from 10:50 pm AEST for live blog coverage of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Having made its return to the schedule in 2020 as part of the revised calendar, Imola earned a callup once again for this season and this time sees the racing take place in April as opposed to November.

Despite the different time of year, the conditions are quite similar with an unexpected chill – though ultimately the stark opposite of what was seen at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

First blood was drawn by Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton at Sakhir, with Red Bull and Max Verstappen were left to lick their wounds. The Silver Arrows have capitalised in Imola on Red Bull, who’ve had quite the messy weekend so far.

Hamilton will start from pole for the 99th time in his career, as Verstappen ended qualifying only third fastest – albeit 0.087 seconds behind the Mercedes. A surprise from Sergio Perez saw the Mexican collect his first front-row start in the sport for Red Bull.

Perez will start the race on the soft tyre, which means he’ll have much more grip than both teammate Verstappen and Hamilton, who’ll be on the mediums. At least Red Bull have strategy options for this race where overtaking on track will be limited.

Outsiders for the podium include both Italian-based outfits in the impressive AlphaTauri and the resurgent Ferrari, who in terms of their race pace during practice were only six-tenths off initial pacesetters Mercedes.

Charles Leclerc put Ferrari on the second row in fourth, while Pierre Gasly was fifth and they are in great positions to pick up the pieces if there were anything to go wrong with the top three. No doubt though they’ll be joined in the fight by the McLarens, led by Daniel Ricciardo in sixth.

2020 saw Verstappen retire from the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix with a tyre failure, completing an unwanted but unique, trifecta of retirements in Italy through a single season. Will this be the Red Bull driver’s year for redemption?

Who will reign in Imola at the end of 63 laps? And will it be the result of another epic battle between prospective title challengers in Verstappen and Hamilton?

Be sure then to tune in on The Roar from 10:50 pm AEST for live blog coverage of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Didn't see the race Jawad but it's good to see Max win. I think the Red Bulls will more than match the Mercs this year if the first 2 races are any guide. Dan's going to have his hands full keeping ahead of Norris who's proving to be a real competitor.

RACE REPORT Max Verstappen opened his wins account for 2021 with a victory in Imola, beating Lewis Hamilton comprehensively by 20 seconds at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The race started in damp conditions, though it did not stop the flying Dutchman who launched himself from the second row of the grid to the lead, heading into the Tamburello chicane. From there, Verstappen was unchallenged for the lead and despite a red flag in the middle of the race – the Red Bull carried on to draw level with Hamilton in the standings. Hamilton made a rare error and was off at Turn 7 on Lap 33, fighting for the dry racing line with Williams’ George Russell. The seven-time world champion was able to reverse his car out of the gravel to re-join the race – though end up a lap off the leader. The race was red flagged on Lap 34, following a high-speed crash between Valtteri Bottas and Russell in which the Williams briefly toured the grass and then in re-joining the track collected the Mercedes. Prior to the rolling restart, the lapped cars were able to unlap themselves – which included Hamilton who was down in ninth. This was contentious given that from there, the Mercedes was able to charge back to second. Rounding out the podium was Lando Norris, who took the gamble at the restart for a set of soft tyres – while the rest of his rivals were on the medium compound. The McLaren held Hamilton behind until Lap 60, though ultimately the faster car made it past. Third, along with sixth from Daniel Ricciardo means that McLaren stays ahead of Ferrari in the constructor’s championship, in their fight for third position. Ferrari meanwhile had a solid race with both their cars to finish fourth and fifth, led by Charles Leclerc. A messy race for Sergio Perez saw him fail to score points, despite starting the race from the front-row. A 10-second time penalty for overtaking under the Safety Car and then touring the gravel, when battling with Sebastian Vettel ultimately kept the Mexican away from his race winning teammate. Vettel as well was forced to retire from the race with the team hoping to save his gearbox. Whilst Williams’ day was made worse with a double retirement, following the early crash from Nicholas Latifi.

Yeh that makes up for the total lap time but even before Lewis has DRS he was closing in down the straights.

Lap 61/63: Hamilton sets the fastest lap as well with a 1:16.702 which would give him the point he needs to stay in front of Verstappen in the championship standings.

Lap 60/63: This time Hamilton can get the job done! He goes around the outside of Tamburello and relegates the McLaren of Norris to third. Leclerc is only 1.5 seconds behind and would be salivating at the chance of a taking a podium for Ferrari.

Lap 59/63: Again a look around the outside for Hamilton, though Norris is doing an amazing job to hold his McLaren in front of the seven-time world champion. Some technical gremlins also at play in the McLaren. Verstappen meanwhile has a 20 second lead.

It’s hard to understand how the Mercedes has so much more straight line speed than the Mclaren when they are supposed to have the same engine.
