Burleigh Bears vs Wynnum Manly Seagulls

The Burleigh Bears and the Wynnum Manly Seagulls will do battle for Queensland rugby league’s biggest prize. Join The Roar for live coverage from 3:15pm (AEST).

This year sees the Queensland Cup grand final return to Dolphin Oval in Redcliffe for the first time in 16 years.

While Lang Park is the spiritual home of Queensland rugby league, the newly refurbished Redcliffe ground should provide the grand final atmosphere that has been somewhat lacking recently in Brisbane (with the exception of the PNG Hunters’ famous win in 2017).

A sell-out crowd is expected for what is set be a great spectacle.

Wynnum Manly arrive off the back of an upset win over the Blackhawks up in Townsville last week.

The Bears likewise caused a surprise last, beating runaway minor premiers, the Sunshine Coast Falcons in a dominant 24-6 performance at Pizzey Park.

The Burleigh line-up is stacked with talent, most notably, the inclusion of Anthony Don and Tyronne Roberts-Davis in the backs.

The Bears will be looking for their second title under coach Jim Lenihan, who took the team to the 2016 premiership.

Seven members of that title-winning side will be on the field at Dolphin Oval.

Wynnum Manly, meanwhile, have enjoyed a remarkable run up to second on table this year, following three lean years out of the finals between 2016-2018.

The once-proud club last tasted success under the stewardship of Paul Green back in 2011-12, but have endured a lean run since then.

They will face a tough task, though, against a Bears side that has had the wood over the Seagulls in their last five encounters.

The two sides most recently met in the first week of the finals series, with the Bears tasting victory in a high-scoring 34-32 encounter at the BMD Kougari Oval.

Prediction
Burleigh have too much class in the backs, too much experience in the forwards, and should account for a spirited Seagulls side.

Scarlett was very good again. I still want the Broncs to gi with him next year if they can't sign and origin calibre half like Keary or DCE

I was hoping for a Wynumm win to have an old school BRL sydney league final. I am hoping the Bears learned from their performance a couple of years ago and stay off the sauce until next week.

Politoni has very good service too. I've rated Page for a long while and the Titans keep buying these forwards who end up as over-paid ISP players, they could do worse than giving him a chance. He held his own quite comfortably in the WC in '17 for PNG and at 28, he's right in the prime prop age group. IMO, Wynnum has far better backs but another example of winning the middle first.

Hey Rellum, you got your predicted State Final. Can they win, yeah it'll be tough. Just going through he Jets team list and there's a lot of NRL experience in there. However, I didn't have the Bears making the GF let alone winning it. Maybe the Qld team's don't put much value in the State Final as they haven't shown up in recent years. Last year, Redcliffe were nowhere near their best. TBH, I would've like to see PNG get up, or even just play well for that matter to show the NSWRL how well their honest, tough style was but that Penrith team was pretty much NRL players or soon to be. From reports, the Jets have had the same run as the Bears insofar as coming from a long way back so who knows. Already planted the seed with the missus to take the kids and find something else to do (she wants me to go to the pub) but I'll be a few beers deep and 1st round of BBQ done by this game - love the Monday public holiday!

Gee Netown looked good to me Rellum. I think the bears will have their work cut out but they have two great props and Leary or Lawry ( sorry can't quite remember) is a serious player. Really enjoyed both games . Reminded me of what RL can be without the rubbish in the tackle.

Do you think they can win next week? I am less confident than usual and we haven't done well in the last couple of years

Watched it last night. It 12k capacity? It looked great and better then half of one tier at Suncorp. Gee the Bears were relentless through the middle and Fogarty, just sits at the in between point of Q Cup and NRL. Maybe could've made a fist of it given a decent chance. Well done Bears. Pumping 2 of the standout teams in consecutive weeks is a great effort. Now give it to the NSW boys next week.

They will take on the Newtown Jets, who have triumphed 20-15 in extra-time over the Wentworthville Magpies at Bankwest Stadium in the NSW Cup decider. Thanks for Stuart Thomas for calling what sounded like an enthralling decider!

The Bears will now head south to Sydney, having earned their spot in next week's State Championship held on Grand Final Day.

This is the Burleigh Bears' fourth state title, following premierships in 1999, 2004 and 2016. They are the second most-successful side in Cup history, only overshadowed by Redcliffe's six premierships.

The Duncan Hall medalist is Kurtis Rowe, after an outstanding performance at fullback. Rowe was rock solid under the high-ball today and scored two tries, in a repeat of his 2016 Grand Final performance.

The move back to Redcliffe has definitely been a success for the QRL. We will be seeing a few more deciders here over the next decade, I’d wager.

A sellout is so much better than 12,000 or so at Suncorp.

Bears skipper Luke Page “The second premiership is definitely more emotional. We’ve got a lot of new boys at the club. We’ll have a few beers tonight, and we’ll get back on the training paddock on Tuesday. We want to win (the State Championship) for Queensland”.

Burleigh coach Jim Lenihan “It’s fantastic. We’ve worked hard all year. The best thing happening was the Sunshine Coast taking the spotlight off us, and we were just able to get on with it.”

Looks like a great afternoon, couldn't attend this year which was disappointing. Moving the game back to Redcliffe was a good move, it's now the perfect little stadium for a game like this...

Sauiluma throws the ball into the green section of the crowd, who have no response for him this time.
