Round 4 of the NRL kicks off tonight when the Manly Sea Eagles host the Penrith Panthers at Lottoland. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8:05pm (AEDT).

You’d be hard pressed to find two teams in the NRL experiencing more different starts to 2021. Penrith have picked up where they left off last year’s home-and-away season, while Manly seem to be lurching from one disaster to another.

Sure, the Dragons look to have improved this year, but a 38-12 drubbing last week left Sea Eagles fans in no doubt as to where they stand.

Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran are still struggling to create enough chances, but you can hardly blame them for the 66 per cent completion rate. That’s where the Sea Eagles need to improve.

Des Hasler has resisted mass changes, with Morgan Boyle coming onto the bench. Toafofoa Sipley is the one player to have been dropped from the squad.

Many thought the loss of Nathan Cleary would lead to the Panthers’ downfall last round against the Storm. How wrong were we? This team just finds ways to win.

While Cleary provides the base, it’s Jarome Luai who creates the most problems for opposition defences. His combination with Viliame Kikau, Stephen Crichton and Brian To’o on the left edge is simply too good for most teams.

Crichton moves to fullback this week to cover the loss of Dylan Edwards. Matt Burton has been named in the centres and Nathan Cleary returns at halfback.

Prediction
The Sea Eagles are a better team at Brookvale but there is a significant gulf between these two teams.

It’s hard to see anything other than a big Panthers win

You might have a point. They may come under, which spells trouble for anyone else with a decent player because they'll be bought with the spare $$ chooks now might have. But add the $$ for JWH, Radley & Manu..

Probably Covid... Apparently it's everywhere. I even got a sticker on my bin saying it had Covid and was too close to the other bins... I got to keep Covid distance between bins......

Yes I agree but, that is not the only problem, there is not enough talent going around for manly to pick from, it takes years to build good talent and getting juniors right up there to NRL standards or unless you are the Storm where these rookies seems to just chime in, where I'm sure there is plenty of appropriate and strict standards of coaching is the rule. Which is missing in allot of NRL clubs and they are behind the eight ball before and even a top class player joins the roster never mind a rookie kid that hasn't got a clue, that was very apparent with Seibs at the Broncs where he had all the talent but he didn't have the talent to harness it all, so it works in reverse also.

Looks like his form has picked up where he left of for Penrith last year.

Manly lack the forwards, the outside backs, the spine and have a coach who is too old school to have a chance of rehabilitation. Just 3 class players in injury prone Tom Turbo, Jake T. and DCE are not enough if they don't have a decent roster to go with it. Unless Manly clear out this mob and go on a heavy recruitment drive, or have talented juniors in the wings I don't know about, I don't see things turning around. I think Geoff Toovey could help Manly to turn their attitude, passion and commitment around, but they have to give him half a chance by overhauling their roster. Neither Bennett, Bellamy or Robinson could turn Manly's current squad into a top 8 team. Look at the current evidence of how a substandard roster is a massive and insurmountable impediment to good coaches like Madge and Payten.

This is the first year I believe that the chooks are salary cap compliant since they first bought a premiership in 2013 for $4.5 mill over the salary cap. Now "Million Dollar Man" number 2, Cooper Cronk, has left the club, "Million Dollar Man" number 3, Angus "knuckles" Crichton is on $650K and Boyd Cordner $850K, Jake Friend $650 and possibly Luke Keary $650K are all about to be medically retired I can hardly claim that now. Especially not after being beaten by salary cap compliant Souths 60-8 in their round 20 match last year.

When I was pushed to round off my top 8 I selected; 7. Knights, 8. Titans. I don't rate either Nathan Brown or Trent Barrett (the slap-happy brothers) as head coaches. I don't buy into the hype around Barrett or Brown, particularly with their squads. I'm surprised by the Cowboys under Todd Payten though, who I do rate as a coach. But a coach can only do so much without the right cattle. The Sea Eagles, Bulldogs, Cowboys, Warriors and Dragons just don't have the roster to perform at the elite level IMO like the top clubs. The Broncos have a lot of talented young players but very little experience, massive problems with their spine and a rookie NRL coach who is still learning the ropes and who has inherited a complete mess from Anthony "The Trojan Horse" Seibold.

If we’re honest we probably all have that Jekyll and Hyde persona when our sides are underperforming and not playing with commitment. Right now I hate the Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly with a passion for how he is treating Adam Reynolds and stubbornly refusing to compromise and offer him a two-year deal. If Souths lose Reynolds I will make Insider look like a choir boy with how I carry on about Souths if they torpedo their chances in 2021 and stuff their chances going forward because of this. Wait and see.

He hated it when Manly were losing Emcie or playing without heart and commitment. If they put in the effort, showed some pride and the jersey and lost without being disgraced he could live with that. He would be rubbing gravel in his eyes and throwing rocks at his flat screen TV after Manly's first four games this year.

Spot on “Spartacus” well said, we went through all this and the same and its not the fans fault but we are the ones that suffer the most, hopefully Manly get their act together as there is definitely something wrong at the top just like there was at the Bunnies which fans can’t do anything.

 truer words were rarely spoken.. Why all this fuss about Manly having a guy or two around a mill a year? Chooks have more plus half their squad worth around half a mill. So that's um.. around 10mill for around 20 blokes... hmmm...What is the cap?? and what are the other 10 blokes on? Car washing change?

The Facts: Possession: Manly 46%, Panthers 54% Completion rate: Manly 78%, Panthers 85% Time in possession: Manly 25:12, Panthers 29:36 Tackles Made: Manly 325, Panthers 307 * Manly defended 3 sets or 18 tackles more. Errors: Manly 10, Panthers 8 Penalties Conceded: Manly 2, Panthers 3 IMO that isn't where Manly lost it. Missed Tackles: Manly 38, Panthers 23 (15 extra missed tackles) Ineffective Tackles: Manly 20, Panthers 12 (8 extra ineffective tackles for Manly) Tackle Breaks: Manly 23, Panthers 38 (15 extra tackle breaks for the Panthers) Line Breaks: Manly 1, Panthers 9 (8 extra line breaks to the Panthers) Post Contact Metres: Manly 439, Panthers 525 Offloads: Manly 7, Panthers 15 (8 extra offloads for the Panthers - over 2:1 ratio) Kick Return Metres: Manly 159, Panthers 246 Defence and Manly's lack of attitude, energy and communication in defence. Their inability to stop forward packs rolling forward or outside backs on kick returns are putting Manly behind the 8-ball. Clearly losing Fornua-Blake and Thompson and Taupau's inability to step up to cover AFB is exposing Manly's soft underbelly in the middle third and their weak edge defence as players are playing out of position or are simply not up to first grade IMO. That said, in that form the Panthers would have put most NRL sides to the sword tonight.

OK, I lied. I tipped the Panthers to win by 30+ but I didn't want to ruffle any seagull feathers. I was only 10 points off. :silly:

Like I said, Manly must make changes. If Turbo is not able to return early next week (and Manly should NOT risk Turbo returning before he is fit) then drop Boyle and Gosiewski move Suli and Parker to the bench to cover Manly's forward rotation (back row) move Dylan Walker to Morgan Harper to the centres. Drop Jason Saab and replace him with Tevita Funa. Move Josh Schuster to FB, Cust to 5/8 and Foran to hooker. 1. Schuster 2. Funa 3. Harper 4. Walker 5. Garrick 6. DCE (he should be a running 5/8) 7. Cust (let Cust organise) 9. Foran 11. Suli 12. Parker
