The North Queensland Cowboys are on the hunt for their first win under new coach Josh Hannay, but standing in their way are the red-hot Canberra Raiders. Join The Roar for live scores from 5:30pm (AEST).

The Cowboys were tenacious, but they were denied by Manly last Friday night, going down 24-12 to slump to 3-8 on the year. It was hardly a disaster, but with caretaker coach Hannay making his designs on the top job public, he’d want to start putting up the points soon.

As for Canberra, they’ve put together two potentially season-defining wins over the last fortnight, knocking off the Roosters and Rabbitohs to go from being dead and buried to potentially a genuine premiership contender again. They may sit fifth currently, but they absolutely cannot afford a slip-up here.

These sides split their two meetings last season, with the Raiders getting up 30-12 in Townsville, before the Cowboys got revenge in the nation’s capital by a score of 22-16. The last six meetings have been split three apiece.

Gee that game just highlights how problematic the six again rule is, raiders effectively win off a penalty goal off the cowboys kicking a goal line dropout out on the full, meanwhile at 8-6 down the Cowboys had a set restart inside the Raiders' ten and had the ball stripped on the first tackle for zero advantage. The rule still needs some tweaking methinks

Yeah I don’t think Clifford would be happy about the short kicking game. In his defence it was probably one of the first games where he has had to do all attacking kicks. Thurston, Morgan, Drinkwater and even the little debutant were providing most short attacking options during his career. Tonight in the last 20 Clifford was getting it repeatedly and the Raiders were onto it. I wish they didn’t kick from dummy half on the 2nd and through pressure passes. Cooper I probably not worth keeping in the 17. He’s just playing for career numbers IMO. The young boys need the time.

Not sure why my comments aren't appearing lately - nothing rude or too negative. I wonder if this one will appear?

HIDEOUS climate - my mother was born there, moved to Mt Morgan then Brisbane. I perfected it and moved to Canberra.

Trying to fool Bulldogs into taking him. Fingers crossed they are stupid enough to do it.

Cheers Rob - at least the Raiders have learnt to win ugly in the past couple of years - would like to see a good strong big win at some stage - but there are two sides out there and the Cowboys really had a go tonight

With the Broncos in their usual form the Cows are in NO danger of being the worst Queensland team!

I agree Rob. I was actually reasonably impressed with a lot Clifford's kicks. He was often putting them deep into the corner and making it hard for Rapana and co; just the more attacking kicks needed some more work. A bit too one dimensional I thought. Yes Feldt dropped a couple over the line but you have to have other options so it isn't predictable. All in all, the defence was pretty solid from the Cowboys but they need a bit more patience and polish in attack. A bit more of that could have won them the game tonight.

I thought one of the errors concede by Cowboys pass from dummy half was a result of Raiders player standing to the side at marker. But I tried not to be so crank with whining this week. Just saying Whieghton and a few Raiders like to stand a right beside the man playing the ball.

Yeah I don't want to be too harsh but we don't win many and that one got away from us. We really had a dig in that Rob and I wanted them to get the reward. . Anyway that was heaps better. I was getting sick of that weak middle crepe.

Not sure the Raiders out kicked us. Feldt dropped 2 over the line but he got cleaned out in the air on one. Attention to detail was off but I think Hampton is not a 6 of much threat. Maybe Clifford would have been better with someone else offering some threats. Asiata did then got hurt. How many halves pairings is that now? It makes a difference when you know each other well in those positions.

Yeah I agree but that was one of the worst kicking performances I have seen from a team for a long time. It's not nrl standard. And we were still in the game until the end . Imagine that performance with a half decent kicking game.

A whisker better in experience and strength. It’s nice to win the close ones Geoff especially on the road. congrats.

He needs a player like Morgan to pass it to. Made a difference for JT having someone else to go to on occasions. Hampton is well below Morgan and M. Bowen when it comes to options. Hell even Drinkwater maybe.

Hmm - someone suggested the Cows were strong across the park. Perhaps the worst halves pairing I've every seen in my life! Sorry - they were dreadful. Joshy needs a rethink in that department. My wife and I are available if they don't have anyone else.
